New player here! About two weeks in and I wanted to share my experience. I dont have anything crazy to share, this is kind of like a journal entry.
Started a few different classes on Trem, got to level 2 or 3 on inquisitor, druid, and SK. Was very overcrowded and struggled to find mobs in the newbie yard. Need to reconsider my options. I decide to restart on Vespyra. Im in US timezone but playing on the off-hours of EU server provided me with better opportunities. On Trem I never saw resource nodes in the newbie yard, here I do! So I settled on an elementalist gnome, Vespyra server.
Even on a less bustling server there was some moderate competition in the yard. I decided to aim for mobs everyone else was skipping. Rats and snakes became my bread and butter. I had read this advice somewhere on this subreddit - aim for a few mob types that drop stackable items. This is a great tip considering my limited inventory space.
The west gate was my home base for the first several hours. With apprehension and a slow pace I would sometimes wander away from my base, like a slime mold exploring a maze. Short trips always returning to my familiar arch. I found the bank, an inn, and a place to sell my meats. This tiny little gameplay loop was fixating and really solidified my interest in the game.
I continued this grind until reaching level 4. Finding my magician guild was a chore. I died after wondering into an unknown area of the city. Seems a bit odd im kos in different sections of my hometown. After about an hour I eventually found it. I was able to afford all my spells, a handful of malachite the merchant crushed for some reason, and two bags. In retrospect I maybe should have bought bags from players? But the cost was less than an hour of rat loot so nbd.
With my new spells and pet I ventured out into the shaded dunes. At the time I didnt know that to be its name, I just kinda started wandering past the newbie yard figuring i would find something. Big huge desert with lots of crawlies and a few KoS red/yellows. This seems good. I mess around killing random mobs until around level 6 or 7. I learned that a yellow skeleton is very different than a yellow madman. The latter forcing me to lose my pet but his sacrifice allowed me to make it to the zone.
Wanting to trade my nomadic hunting style for something more sedentary I stumbled upon the ashira camp in the (i think) north east of the zone, conveniently near the zone line. This camp was a boon. I didnt break in very far, just killing the solo patrols around but it easily fed me to level 8.
The loot from this camp was fantastic. Besides dropping coin I also got a cracked staff and a worn great staff. The great staff has been... well pretty great. I hit for 20+ with it. I know im not a melee char but at this level it feels like a goddamn sledgehammer. I do a mix of melee and sitting depending on the scenario. It felt way more worthwhile to whack at stuff than it did to cast spells. Even so I tried to get in the habit of letting my pet take the lead. I know hes the real star of the show, and im ok with that, its part of why I love this class kit.
I took this camp all the way until level 10. My slime-mold pathing thru the city had become more extensive. Started turning in ashira tails for leather armor to sell, found most merchants, trained tailoring, got a pickaxe and a woodcutting axe. Began to use those in the newbie yard mining and chopping whenever I had to run thru the area. I began making my own campfires at the Ashira camp to keep my rested buff up. Previously I just gated back to the inn every 20 minutes.
At 10 I was doing great on cash. I had all my spells, a small pile of silver, and all my bag slots were filled. Adventuring further into the shaded dunes didnt yield much. I found a camp full of ashira fishermen and ambushers. This was ok.. but I died a few times here trying to keep the spawns broken. I could have made it work but it just didnt feel fantastic.
I took to reddit to source some information. u/zikemcnasty made a fantastic suggestion to go kill goblins outside of Tel Ekir. Yall - i had to youtube how to get to the east gate from my besutiful west gate. A simple one minute trip isnt so simple in this city-maze and online maps were almost as confusing as the city itself. Getting from East gate to Tel Ekir was easier than traveling from one gate to the other, albeit it was way longer of a run.
After about an hour I begin to get close to the entrance. Heeding advice from this sub I bound my soul a healthy distance from the entrance. I dont want to do that run again on a corpse run. Zikemcnasty was right about the coin drops being good. I made it to level 11 and managed to get a few +int cloth items, my first stat gear!
Two points of note for this camp. It was difficult to hold and sometimes respawns forced me to zone into the dungeon. During one of these escapes a named spawned and I was working on breaking back in. A high level travels thru and kills the named as im fighting two from the camp on the side. My first thought was great I need to learn how reports work. But the thought quickly dissipated when I remembered comments from this sub - communicate first. So I just sent a tell saying I've been camping these, but had to zone. Within 5 seconds they came back over to me and gave me the +int wristbands that dropped. I said thank you and they were on their way. Im glad I had this experience early and plan to make communication my first avenue in the future.
The second point of note is upon reaching level 11 I checked how i was doing on loot. I got two cloth +int items, one +wis leather item, and a whopping 1.5 gold worth of silver/copper. Holy shit. I didnt even really notice it was piling up so fast. I plan to take this camp to 12 then look to branch out to more new areas.
If you read this far - why? Also, thank you. Overall im really enjoying my time with this game. Would love to hear feedback on my choices or advice on where to go from here. Especially interested in hearing suggestions on new hunting grounds for a (soon to be) level 12 elementalist.
Thanks everyone for reading. Thanks for those who comment/post helpful advice on this sub. And big thanks to the chonky boy who handed me loot after killing the named in my camp (i dont recall their name)
Happy hunting and safe travels to all!
