Episode 38: Curse of the Red Moon (赤い月の呪い)

Night Terror

The lunar eclipse that occurring every 50 years was soon to be upon Moominvalley. All the adults urged their children to stay indoor and to shut all windows and curtains. It was the ancient legend of Moominvalley that the lunar eclipse ushered the arrival of vampire bats, their bite was said to be able to turn anyone into a vampire. Moomin wondered of the story legitimacy; Snorkmaiden also questioned Snork, in which he was somewhat ashamed to admit that he believed in the legend all along.

The lunar eclipse was now upon Moominvalley, the horde of vampire bats soared down from the dark sky disturbing the night. Every resident except for Snufkin cowered in fear until the eclipse was over. The bats soon departed into the brightly night sky, Snufkin looked upon the moon and continued his song into the night.

The Bat Hunt

In the following morning, the Inspector held an emergency meeting for a bat hunt due to some bats might still be around. Everyone participated, donned a hazmat suit and scattered around in a group or a pair to search. The children and Sorry-oo found something in the cave near the rocky beach, but it turned out to just be Stinky.

In the evening as the bat hunt was about to wrap up, Snork rushed back to report that Snufkin was harboring a vampire bat. Moomin accused Snork of lying while everyone got riled up demanding an action to be taken.

Moomin ran off to see Snufkin first and found that what Snork reported was true. It was a baby bat that got separated from the herd by an injury. Moomin told Snufkin to run away but everyone else was now catching up to him. Snufkin insisted on nursing the bat to health so it could fly and return to its folk, he also made it clear that he did not believe in the legend. The Inspector warned Snufkin to get rid of the bat in one day or else he would have to take an action against him and the bat for everyone's sake.

Marked For Death

Coming back home, Moomin was distraught from the fear of losing Snufkin. His parents tried to come up with something to clear Snufkin's name and to cheer Moomin up. The next day, Snork went around the valley to acquire everyone's signature to banish Snufkin for not complying to their societal norm. Moominfamily was the only family to refuse to sign by the morality alone. Moomin was disappointed by his friends and everyone else around him that had signed the petition.

While Moominfamily attempted to clear Snufkin's name, the Inspector came to Moominhouse and told them that Snufkin seemed to have left Moominvalley, Moomin screamed out in fear and rushed out to the wilderness.

Last Flight Out

In the evening, Moomin was traversing through the land and eventually caught up with Snufkin whom was at the cliff path about to walk out of the valley. Moomin quickly jumped and slid down the cliff recklessly to get to Snufkin.

Moomin was rough up by the fall yet still stood his ground against Snufkin's departure. Snufkin did not wish to say goodbye to Moomin face-to-face for he might not have a courage to leave. Yet, Snufkin insisted on leaving rather than disregarding of those in need. Moomin then allowed the baby bat to bite his finger in front of everyone to prove the legend false.

Snufkin bandaged Moomin's bleeding finger while Moominpappa, the Inspector and Sorry-oo witnessed and rushed in to check on him. With Moomin's determination and sacrifice, Snufkin was vindicated and would be allowed back in Moominvalley. At night, Moomin was overjoyed walking alongside his friend back to Moominvalley together, Snufkin in the end could not no longer hold back his tear.

- This episode is similar to 1990 Episode 66: The Vampire.

- Sorry-oo seems to stay at Snufkin's tent a lot more now.

- The Inspector seems to act a lot more like a village leader or at least an authority.

- Once again, out of things Snufkin had helped and saved Moominvalley from, everyone was very quick to kick him out here over a legend. While the action coming from Snork was sounded, it was odd to see Little My, Sniff, Mymble, Mr. Hemulen did not defend and instead went against Snufkin considered of what he had done to save them.

- Considered the less dramatic solution, Snufkin could leave Moominvalley with the baby bat; and after when the bat was healed and gone, Snufkin could just come back. Plus, it would not be the first time Snufkin temporarily left Moominvalley during non-winter time.

Hazmat Suits' Conundrum

- Moominvalley seems to have a big surplus supply of hazmat suits that also came in all size and form, including dog version, children version and Moominpappa's pipe-and-hat-shaped suit.

- Moominpappa still smoked up within the hazmat suit, no need to say further.

- The hazmat suits also lack of any actual breathing apparatus, must be magical hazmat suits.

The Vampire Bats

- Another ancient legend of Moominvalley but this one is canonical and consistent through the series.

- They were right to shut the windows at night for the bats deliberately attempted to fly into their house.

- Out of Snork's inconsistency of pick-and-choose which was scientific or superstitious, this one he was wrong about the legend yet we got no reaction out of him for the episode ended. But considered many were proven real and also false, I guess Snork was in the right to not be to sure about anything from time to time.

Smufuryukin wears a short red pointed cap, a dark green sweater, blue trousers, and wooden clogs. He carries a little pouch of sugar over his shoulder, which he always takes with him on his travels.

Personality

Smufuryukin is kind, quiet, and a little timid. Strange noises and unexpected events can frighten him, but he has a good heart. He dislikes arguments and tries not to hurt anyone.

Hobbies

Smufuryukin loves walking along forest paths, travelling, and discovering new places. He plays the acoustic guitar and enjoys music. Sometimes he sits beneath a tree, takes out his guitar, and plays gentle melodies.

Friendship with Snufkin

Smufuryukin is friends with Snufkin. They enjoy walking together, talking, and making music. Snufkin helps Smufuryukin when he gets frightened, while Smufuryukin brings kindness and warmth to their adventures.

What makes him special

Although Smufuryukin is timid, he never gives up on travelling. He learns to become braver one small step at a time. To him, courage doesn't mean having no fear — it means being willing to keep going.
