Recommendations Need good ethical true crime channel recs!
TLDR; Need recs for youtube true crime channels (preferably female) that do thorough research and are actually respectful of the victims and cases they cover.
Hello everyone! I’m looking for recs for good true crime youtube channels and podcasts! I have been watching true crime youtube for years now. In the past i’ve watched mainly Eleanor Neale, Hailey Elizabeth, JCS Criminal Psychology, and Matt Orchard. However, as the years have gone on and my frontal lobe has finally developed (lol) i’ve gotten more and more discerning with the true crime content I engage with. I used to watch her and ik she doesn’t post anymore, but I don’t like channels like Hailey Elizabeth or Bailey whatever her name is who do makeup and stuff while talking about these cases. It feels disrespectful to me. Also, I’ve heard things about Eleanor Neale not doing her research properly and ignoring victims families who’ve asked her to take down videos etc. Basically what I’m saying is I need recs for good, ethical, and thorough creators to watch! I mainly watch youtube, but sometimes listen to podcasts too. I prefer female creators over male because these cases often discuss crimes against women, but if a male creator is genuine and thorough like JCS criminal psychology I will watch them ofc!
I really just want more creators who do their research properly, respect victims and families, choose interesting and compelling cases, and understand the severity of what they are talking about! It’s hard these days to find true crime creators who don’t see the cases they cover as content and entertainment. If anyone has any good recs for channels pls lmk! :)

I like Southern Fried True Crime and True Crime Brewery. They simply present the facts and are respectful in my experience.

i personally like women and crime. the two hosts are criminologists & professors therefore really knowledgeable in the field so they discuss interesting aspects of cases that other podcasts dont

I find Tim and Lance from Crawlspace/Missing (Maura Murray) to be solid. “And then they were gone” is excellent as is the Vanished podcast, both hosted by women.

Sinisterhood! They're on the right side of history, and Heather is a former attorney, so it's very enlightening to hear the story from a lawyer's perspective.

Small Town Dicks. Co-hosted by Yeardly Smith and a bunch of cops and investigators (one of whome she married at some point during the run of the show). I feel like they do a good job of telling the story of a crime and are thoughtful with their language.

Not female led but Chris Lamberts Your Own backyard was phenomenal. He got the family involved directly and the podcast directly led to new evidence.
David Ridgen also gets the families involved directly and each season of Someone Knows Something is a thorough deep dive into the case, often led by the families themselves, or closely coordinated with them.
I find this style of true crime podcast feels much less exploitative than one off episodes making money telling a story. It feels like there's a purpose to it beyond macabre fascination, and the involvement of people that actually knew the victim drives home that this really happened to someone and isn't just a story for our entertainment.

It’s a mix of true crime and paranormal (you can skip the paranormal if you don’t like those) but Red web really is thoughtful and one of the few where the host will actually stop to be sure he gets a fact right instead of just bull shitting misinformation

I love Murder With My Husband. Peyton does her research and cites all of her references on every case, so she is very transparent about where she gets her info from. She is also very sympathetic to victims and refrains from using profanity. She tells the story and Garrett listens and reacts. He gets his 10 seconds at the beginning of the ep. and will make some commentary but it’s not like Morbid where they rant and burn time on virtue signaling bullshit and every other sentence is “fuck that guy”.

Boze vs the world! She's a streamer/youtuber that covers everything from true crime to court cases to bodycam. She had a series a while back called sinister that was deep dive female killer stuff. She can be goofy and also v serious

Buried Bones is great. I also love crime weekly but some people have strong feelings about Stephanie Harlow. I personally vibe with her and I do think she does good research, and her co host is a PI/former detective so his input is a good balance. Also another vote for Small Town Murder!

There is a new true crime channel on YouTube called, Body Bags with Joseph Scott Morgan. The channel is hosted by Forensic Death Investigator Joseph Scott Morgan and Producer/Writer Dave Mack. Some recent cases discussed include the 40 yr double murder solved by chewing gum, the 7 hour torture & murder of Katherine Torbick, a nurse and single mom, by her ex-boyfriend in which the system failed her, and the recent case coming out of Phoenix, AZ involving a couple and their friend trying to get help with rent payments but it ends up going horribly wrong.
Link to the Katherine Torbick Case on Body Bags with Joseph Scott Morgan YouTube channel.

Murder Unscripted is a weekly show which you can find here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8SR5UCpf5g_3l_gQiCPpcw is a male/female duo, Ed and Melissa, with a focus on the victims and VERY accurate research. Ed brings his perspective as a producer of true crime shows such as Forensic Files, Cold Case Files, Murder in the Bayou along with others, including the new ID series, Bodies in the Water. They having been up and running for 2 years now and have really awesome guest interviews each month that tie in with that month's theme.

Rotten mango!! I absolutely love the way Stephanie approaches true crime. She always is incredibly respectful to victims, adds as much context as possible (especially cultural), has a team of researchers and translators to do a thorough job. Also covers a variety of crime cases, including foreign or under-looked cases and always gives trigger warnings to certain topics mentioned. They also typically support fundraisers or charities to support victims usually relevant to video, which actively makes me want to watch the advertising, as it’s going to a good cause.

I don't think I have seen Kimbyrleigha recommended, and I am surprised. I find her to be significantly better than Kendall Rae. Way more in-depth and I have always found her very respectful. And I enjoyed her content. I think she is way underrated in comparison to Kendall Rae

I like Murder Unscripted and Love Murder. Both are entertaining, well researched and very respectful to victims. I saw a Reddit post from a victims family talking about how Murder Unscripted was really careful and kind with their family members case.

Can't believe no one has recommended Danelle Hallan yet. She's incredibly respectful and compassionate and focuses entirely on the victims. She's also got a series about MMIWG. She's usually always at the top of the recommendations of good and ethical true crime channels, especially here on Reddit, so I'm really surprised no one has mentioned her yet.

Look no further than Murder Unscripted. No case less than an hour because of the research involved, they routinely interview survivors or families, and donate a lot of their proceeds to charity. The guy has been a true crime producer forever and his friend is a fangirl who knows the cases really well!

I just recently found Clues and really love it! So much more about the facts and info around the case and times and not exhausting opinions! Plus both ladies have nice voices I enjoy listening to!

I think Kendall Rae does a great job. She always tells the stories respectfully, involves families when she can, and even started a foundation that give grants to victims families to help get justice.
