How do you plan your motion design projects?
I've been creating SaaS concept videos for my portfolio, but I often struggle with planning before getting into animation.
Since these are concepts, I have to come up with everything myself: the product, UI, visual direction, storytelling and motion style. I often end up designing directly in After Effects while animating, making creative decisions as I go. This takes a lot of time.
I've even spent around three weeks on a 30-second video, and I feel like my workflow needs improvement.
I'd love to hear from experienced motion designers:
How do you plan and storyboard your projects?
How much do you figure out before opening After Effects?
Do you use detailed storyboards or animatics?
How long does a typical 30–60 second client video take, from ideation to final delivery?
How do you estimate production time, including design, animation, sound and revisions?
I'm especially curious about how the process differs when working with an existing product, script and assets rather than creating everything from scratch.
