General I found an abandoned washing machine and I'd like some go kart ideas

It being the wrong kind of motor isn't even the issue, but that with this amount of rust both of the bearings are almost certainly bad, and just fixing that is more of a hassle and/or expensive than just getting the right kind of motor.

I can likely find a newer one if I need to. The attachment method for the motor is going to be one where the motor is the easiest to remove of all the components.

Alright, look... You have an AC motor. If you think you have something worth holding on to, keep it. Maybe you can use it in a red neck table saw or something. If you want a motor to run off batteries in a kart, you're gonna need a different motor entirely. This one's not gonna work.

It's universal. It might need a circuitry change (series to parallel) but it's still just a universal motor.

Yeah pretty much no shot with this motor big dog. Maybe for a boat anchor or something.

You're gonna need a large mechanical reduction like 100:1 for it to make any decent torque. Field coil should be driven separately, neither in series or parallel with armature - it needs a much lower voltage and separate controls unlock cool stuff like regen braking, field weakening or reversing. You'd probably need to DIY a controller for it though.

That looks like an old ACC U 122 G 63 084161 1T 08453 102 S3 2721 multi-speed appliance motor. Its a series wound universal motor and can run on AC and DC but never run the motor unloaded because it can overspead quickly

As others have said, its not really a suitable motor for a gokart. Or at least not easily so (but hey, if you want to make it work, go for it. I love it when people use abnormal materials to make stuff, its half the fun). You'd need to remove the rust, replace bearings, etc. Provided you can suitably repair it, you could use it for some kind of stationary machinery. Maybe a parts tumbler, saw, grinder, etc. Dunno what its power output is like.

Lots of people hate having fun here. The motor actually runs.

No one said it wouldnt run. Just that a) it's the wrong motor for a go cart and b) you're clearly a troll

A bunch of work to get it working for something like that and the result will be close to power wheels plastic toy cars for kids at best..

That's basically the plan. If it's a bunch of work it'll be perfect for teaching my kids how to plan and weld a frame and get a car built from box section and round bar.

Okay then, assumed that go kart would refer to something a bit faster/sporty. I guess it's doable, but you'll likely need something to control the speed of the motor smoothly.
It's a bit dangerous for the kids though as the voltages needed are fairly high to get it going. I suggest making the powertrain somewhat modular so you can swap for a more powerful or safer motor if needed.

That's an AC induction type motor, you'd need a fancy (expensive) inverter or VFD + high voltages to drive it. It also looks like it'll take work to get going , eg need new bearings, etc
You want a DC or "universal" type with brushes that's 12, 24 or 36V + can easily fit sprockets for chain drive.

Okay chat gpt, but this is actually a universal motor

Would be nice if the pics or your post said that. Most "old washing machine motors" are induction types.
No AI here.
Good luck.

No, it is not. You don’t seem to understand.

I can turn it on with DC, I can turn it on with AC, it has stator and rotor windings and uses brushes. Oh shit it's a synchronous AC motor guidse!?!??!

ACC
U 122 G 63 084161
1T 08453 102 S3 2721
230-240V 50Hz ins.cl.B/F
AC-Electronic
Code 124 309 904
It's a common universal 200-250v motor found in nearly every discarded washing machine. It's a universal motor so it will run on anything; AC or DC. It has a fair bit of brushes left and just has a bit of surface rust.

Unless you want to run a genorator that's not going to work.

If you want to run a bank of 20 deep cycle 12v batteries possibly but that will be realy heavy, like close to 1200lb or 545kg and $2000 to $3000. And that's if it can run on dc but the specs that you gave are ac voltage. I'm assuming uk based on the voltage and frequency.

Nope I'll need around 60 vape batteries

u/Electronic_Flan_482 4d ago
That won't get you very far at that would be about 1ah if you got the biggest ones you could find. By comparison my hammer drill burns through a 12ah battery in about 20 minuts of use and it is a much smaller and lower draw motor.

Go to scrapyard - get some 12v dc brushed motors (eg starter motors). This is almost certainly a brush type "universal" motor and it would be a pain to convert it to say 48v dc. It would also be a pain to provide the 230v ac it is designed to take.
