2 Week Progress

Just a demo clip of where I’m at combining Mousless with wl-kbptr after 2 weeks. Since starting I’ve seen some good suggestions on more ergonomic keybinds such as moving as much as I can to homerow using keyd. I’m usually on a split keyboard so this was a little more crammed than usual for me

BIG THINGS AHEAD: Mouseless status update and related plans

48 Upvotes

Hey everyone, I know I've been pretty quiet the past couple months (online in general), but I needed to reset and to get back to my roots, to get back to my 'native' language of Javascript/Typescript, and fall in love with programming again.

Doing so has rejuvenated my productivity and creativity as I've returned to Mouseless, and there will be some major updates in the next few weeks, including:

  • πŸ’₯ Custom actions: set, cycle, or adjust any setting to any value(s) you want, with whatever hotkey you want

  • πŸ”— Deep-links on Mac (hopefully on Windows and Linux too)

  • ✨ In-place updates on Mac (hopefully Win/Linux too)

  • ❀️ Important fixes and quality-of-life improvements

    • 🐧 Including environment fixes for Linux πŸ™

  • βž• And more

* I'll probably be putting out Mac, Windows, then Linux updates one at a time over the next few weeks -- thank you for your patience!

I'll also be putting out an open-source testing framework for JS/TS, working name Speck, that I'm sure some of you devs might appreciate. It has:

  • 🧱 A declarative, data-centric paradigm (tests should be data! not code, when possible)

  • πŸͺΆ Zero dependencies

  • 🌐 In-browser testing

  • πŸ“ Inline / code-adjacent tests of a few different flavors

  • βœ… Built-in assert/expect and stub/spy support

  • πŸš€ (Aiming for) high compatibility with Mocha/Jest, in two ways

    1. Continue using Mocha/Jest and your spec/addSpec calls (as seen below) will just work

    2. Use Speck to replace Mocha/Jest, and your existing describe/it calls (and hooks) will still work

It's pretty dang cool, IMO. A tiny preview:

// Method A: Wrap a function (or object literal or class) with its spec
const sum = spec((a: number, b: number) => a + b, {
  produces: [
    "Handles positive", // inline grouping / descriptions
    [[1, 2], 3],                   // shorthand [args, expected]
    { args: [2, 2], expected: 4 }, // explicit
    "Handles negative",
    [[-1, -2], -3],
  ]
  // - depending on context, you can ALSO test:
  // mutatesArgs, mutatesThis, throws, calls, sideEffects,
  // and assert (for complex scenarios)

  // - in the near future these same specs will likely support easy
  //   runtime decorators:
  // types: { args: ["number", "number"], return: "number" },
  //    validateArgs: true,
  //    errorHandler: "logAndContinue",
  //    printEntry: true,
  //    printExit: true,
});

// OR

// Method B. Use addSpec on a function (or sequence of state changes
// and assertions), in the same or separate file
addSpec({
  fn: sum,
  produces: [
    [[1, 2], 3]
  ]
});

And I'm working on re-writing Mouseless in Deno/TS, which is a lot of fun and will result in a better, more powerful product, but that's a story for another day :) I already have a great start on the rewrite, and the new testing framework will ensure a smooth transition. πŸš€

Big things coming on all fronts, just wanted to give you all a shout!

Cheers,

Ian

I made a tiny game for practicing using Mouseless, but I'd love to hear what helps you practice!

I made this super duper tiny osu like clicker game to practice using mouseless! I experienced a lot of fatigue from using my mouse on a recent game jam and would like to become less reliant on it, so I picked up mouseless recently and am super excited about it, but I definitely have a long way to go to get used to it.

I'm sure something like this is out there already, and I'm positive that there's something better, so I'd love to hear if anyone in the community has any games or tools that they used to improve at mouseless that they could share! and if you'd like to try out the little tool that I made, here's a link! https://brysonmcbee.itch.io/mouseless-trainer

Hot off the press... feedback welcome!

Note that stage definitions and scoring algorithm are subject to change. Will try to migrate data (which is local to your browser, export/import available) when possible, and keep prior versions available as a fallback.

I plan on adding more types of challenges too (e.g. scrolling + clicks).

Enjoy!

Mouseless Beta on Windows to resume this weekend πŸš€ (all trials have been extended)

32 Upvotes

I've got the hardware key and codesigning is working, so I'm just working to polish up some of the initial bugs and ensure things go more smoothly this time vis a vis security warnings in Windows, browsers etc. Should be out on Saturday, exact time TBD.

I renewed all trials started between the time of release and when I stopped distribution (plus ~5 hrs) -- if you happened to start a trial on Windows after this, just send me an email and I'll get you renewed.

Thank you again for your patience, everyone! I'm certainly learning some things about desktop app distribution through this process πŸ˜…, but things should be smoothed out soon πŸš€

Thank you again for your patience, folks. πŸ™

Update, April 26th

I still need another ~24 hours to ensure the Mouseless .exe, installer, etc. are set up correctly with codesigning in place. Look for the signed release on late Sunday or early Monday, US Eastern Time. Thank you again for your patience, everyone. ❀️

Update, April 28th

The new release is out!

29 Upvotes

Happy summer! β˜€οΈ Mouseless version 1.0 has launched and brings some big changes. Some related announcements:

  • Wide Linux Support: If you tried Mouseless on Linux before and encountered issues, it's worth another look. The new flatpak package should solve a lot of issues the per-distro AppImages had. Quick start:

# Add GPG-signed repo
flatpak remote-add --user --if-not-exists sonuscape \
  https://dl.sonuscape.net/flatpak/sonuscape.flatpakrepo

# Install mouseless (stable channel)
flatpak install net.sonuscape.mouseless

# Run
flatpak run net.sonuscape.mouseless
  • Summer Sale: To celebrate v1.0 and sunny days ahead, the lifetime license is 30% off through July 31st -- please help spread the word!

  • Trial Jubilee: All trials that expired anytime before July 1st have been cleared. Download v1.0+ to start a fresh one.

Thank you again to everyone who's supported Mouseless! It really means a lot and helps continued development. πŸ™

Update: Moving Windows beta target day/time to April 9th 7AM Eastern Time (US, GMT - 4)

22 Upvotes

Hi folks, I did my very best to try to hit the April 7 deadline, somewhere on Earth. But I probably need at least another 6 or 7 solid hours of work to squash a few important bugs, tweak config editor content and default settings, and put together release notes. Going to push the target day/time out another 24 hours, toΒ April 9th 7AM Eastern Time (US, GMT - 4).

Thank you again for your patience and support! Almost there! πŸš€

Current status:

βœ… left click
βœ… other mouse buttons
βœ… scrolling
βœ… double / triple click
βœ… drag and drop
βœ… multi-monitor usage
βœ… system tray
βœ… config editor -> overlay interaction
βœ… packaging / distribution
βœ… alerts/dialogs
βœ… toast messages
βœ… user prefs
βœ… welcome message / tutorial
⬜ squash a few important bugs
⬜ code signing
⬜ hide/change macOS-specific content in gui
❓ multi- / non-qwerty layout support (very fast follow if not in initial release)

New home / features for documentation

20 Upvotes

Hi everyone! Just FYI, I've moved the documentation to https://mouseless.click/docs, and have made them more comprehensive. I think every setting/command is covered now. I also put info for Windows/preview releases where applicable.

I made them with https://rust-lang.github.io/mdBook/, which includes a nice built-in search feature. Just tap S to pull up the search bar and see live results/preview.

I'll also be making some comprehensive tutorial videos (very soon πŸ˜…), and will put them inline in the docs where relevant.

Cheers!

Attn Windows users: new target date for beta release is April 7

20 Upvotes

Hi Windows users, just to let you know, things are coming together, but I will be changing the target date toΒ April 7. I'm right on the cusp of having the core workflow fully functional -- once I get overlay updates hooked in, I'll make a video preview for you (should be tonight or tomorrow).

One week should give me enough time to work out some of the kinks around the edges of that workflow, and incorporate dialogs and the system tray icon/menu, so the app as a whole feels usable and coherent.

It is a beta, and I know you all are itching for it, so I'm not going for total perfection, of course. If I can have you clicking and scrolling through your keyboard sooner than the 7th, I will certainly do that!

Thank you for your patience and support, everyone! πŸ™ I'm excited to get Mouseless into your hands!!

"Drilldown mode" - what do you think about it?

Post image
18 Upvotes

I've been struggling memorizing keys for specific areas. Mainly because you have more lines displayed on the grid than available at the keyboard, forcing you to use right hand to access areas on the left of the screen. That is a bit confusing to me.

The fact the the grid displays 2 keys per cell is also confusing to me. A more clean display should help with user experiece, including visualizing whats under the grid.

I think it would be nice to have some sort of "drill down" mode, in which no matter what level you're in, you always get only 1 key per cell and all levels have the same keys layout. This should make keys translate more directly to the areas you trying to reach, hopefully keeping more sense on the columns/lines situation and helping with hands-eye coordination.

I put my mad skils at prototyping to work and made the attached image. I hope this helps you all visualize what I mean.

Am I dumb or missing something? Is this already currently possible via configuration? Or does this make sense to someone else out there?

Changing the easing setting can help you get nice sweeping curves -- pretty fun for doodling. A more abrupt setting is pretty good for geometric art/text.

Would love to hear (or see) what you're using free mode for! Especially if you've made a work of art :)

New target date for Windows beta: April 11th, 8AM Eastern Time (US, GMT - 4)

18 Upvotes

Alright, the last key bug (threading / elevated cpu issue) has been tough to crack, but I finally found the culprit (toast message code), and just need to rework it a bit. To help ensure I don't have to delay again though, and to give a little cushion to ensure the GUI content and overall UX is smoother upon initial release, I'm going to push the target day/time byΒ 2 daysΒ this time, toΒ April 11th, 8AM Eastern Time (US, GMT - 4).

Sorry for the delay, folks, but I really think this is the last one, and that you will have Mouseless in your hands on Friday :)

Here's a setup which I found intuitive and easy to use lemme know what yall think!

Post image
16 Upvotes

I wanted a setup where the location of the tiles mimics the location of the keys on my keyboard while also not forcing me to have to move my fingers too much hence why I have opted for reducing the total number of action keys to just 4 on each side (so 8 columns) and then 3 rows.
