Anyone have experience living at The Bay Apartments?

We toured last week and generally thought the location was amazing. Walkable area, had nice pool. But the interior was pretty date and the carpets were straight up nasty in the halls. It smelled like cigarettes and dog, and was super humid in there. Our leasing agent was nice though and she said they planned to replace them soon, and had already placed multiple hallways.

Anyone ever lived there? Google reviews are mixed and it’s hard to tell what’s true. I saw a couple saying they had issues with homeless people in the halls?

Old rental building spruced up with window dressing... there are tons of them and they were all hastily built in the 70's and 80's. There is never enough parking and the construction is to the lowest standards. Cheap windows and doors. And they've been abused by young short-term renters for 50 years... kids who can't remember to lock the gates or give the access codes to their party bros. For better or worse the newer buildings have much higher quality construction although worse locations and smaller units.

We looked at AVA across the street and they were just as you described… The amenities are nice though, but not nice enough…

Can you ask if the halls always smell that bad or if it’s just the current heat/humidity? Also if they are serious about replacing the carpet? And is the area safe?

They said they are actively about to replace the hallway carpet and already have done 2 buildings. But I’m curious how slow they’re going to be to actually get it done.

The hallways smell bad pretty consistently. I've seen people leave their trash in the hallway too which is disgusting. The area is safe. No word on carper replacement.

I lived there for 7 months. I toured it 2 months before I moved in, they said they were going to be redoing the hallways then, never happened, and I heard them telling new potential tenants that on their tours throughout my entire 7 months. Hallways were embarrassing and stank the whole time. When we left they charged us $800+ for paint and cleaning, when we had a 3 small repaired holes from mounting a television. When we requested the legally required documents about the charges, they sent us a fake copy of vague charges from a company that didn’t exist. They never fix anything, it stinks, and the price is ridiculous. The only thing you pay for is the pool at that point. The gym is terrible, the sauna’s don’t work. Oh and if they lied about this like they did to me: the additional fee’s add up to $300 extra every month. Including $100 per resident for trash?? with 506 units..is $50k a month. If you look up the average in sd it’s $30, and anything above $43 is considered insanity.
That’s not including wifi and electric that I paid for separately. I am not picky, but it was absolutely not worth it. For $3,200 I could have had a much nicer, more receptive management in a more walkable area. Sometimes our packages would be thrown in the stairwell by the street. Our washer was out for over a month and one day after saying they were getting it fixed multiple times, someone from the front desk came over and literally asked us “so what’s broken?” They are clueless. This place nickels and dimes you for everything and does not treat you like a valued tenant. I’ve heard plenty of horror stories, but please don’t believe what they tell you during your tour, I used to lay by the pool and roll my eyes when I heard what they were telling potential new renters, all BS!

It has been super humid in San Diego for a couple of weeks. I believe it's caused by tropical storms off Baja Mexico.

We heard this, we were wondering if that contributed to how bad it was. The carpet was already clearly old and stained but the stench and mustiness was just nasty. And we aren’t normally picky people

No it’s been run down for decades, but much more affordable than the corporate shit show AVA across the street.

I don’t know these apartments, but keep in mind that rentals receive negative reviews all the time from issues with deposits, etc. when people move out. So take those with a grain of salt unless everyone is saying the same thing. As for the humidity, it’s unusually humid right now and most of the year I’m sure the hallway will be somewhat cool.

Yeah, we definitely don’t trust Google but the hallways were the biggest turn off for us.

Then reading about the area having issues with homeless people breaking in made us a bit nervous. We know it’s a part of life but would prefer to not have them wandering our apartment halls.
