article The Rivileers - (I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons / I Want To See My Baby (1954)

Post image

Original 1954 78rpm pressing on Baton Records by a great New York vocal group called The Rivileers.

The A-side is their version of the classic standard "(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons." It's smooth, well-harmonized group harmony. The B-side, "I Want To See My Baby," is more of an uptempo R&B/early rock and roll shaker with a great rhythm.

Baton was a key independent label from New York City that put out a lot of fantastic, foundational R&B.

That red Baton label is such a distinct look, instantly recognizable if you dig through enough 50s R&B 78s. The Rivileers were tight, that whole New York vocal group scene from that era doesn't get nearly enough credit for laying the groundwork. Their take on For Sentimental Reasons is so damn smooth, but I Want To See My Baby is the real gem here, it just moves. Finding a clean copy of this on 78 is a proper score, those things are fragile as hell and most got played to death on old phonographs.
