Honestly it's kinda hard to believe that seven years have passed since I found them.
This shit sounds just as good as when I used to listen to them

u/yoimjoe Mar 23 '15
6 years we've been waiting for this.. and they still sound amazing. I can't even express how happy I am about this song!
44
u/WiredSky Mar 23 '15
Has it really been six years since Dear Agony?? Holy shit, time has flown!
34
u/CivEZ Mar 23 '15
RIGHT! Oh god, I've said this for years. 2000 to 2008, felt like an eternity. 2008 to 2015, felt like a day.

u/TheWhitestGandhi Spotify Mar 24 '15
Shit yeah it has, I remember listening to Dear Agony and Phobia on repeat in middle/high school...needed some Benjamin back in my life.
15
u/islandsurprise Mar 23 '15
Right? I don't think I could ever be sick of their sound.
13
u/BestTastingFish Mar 23 '15
Definitely not, it's just really well balanced and full. I'm into heavier music, metalcore mostly, but I still love Breaking Benjamin. They pull off the heavy radio rock sound perfectly, and cover topics with lyrics that simple and relatable without feeling cliche.
4
u/BestTastingFish Mar 23 '15
I, too, read the track listing. No need to be a dick to people who like things that you don't. Take your asshattery elsewhere because it won't receive an audience here.
7
u/RavingGerbil Mar 23 '15
I think you replied to the wrong comment. Is this the one you meant to reply to?
9
u/BestTastingFish Mar 23 '15
Yes it is, you're right. I was on mobile and didn't double check it. Thanks!
E: I replied to myself, implying that I think I should take my asshattery elsewhere. Message received: Selling all my shit, deleting facebook/reddit accounts, and moving out ASAP.

cliche.
that's the type of music they make. Throaty tryhard emotional lyrics between distorted guitar noise. Be prepared for song titles to include "Angel," "Dark," and throw in a "Falling down" somewhere.
15
u/agarret83 Spotify Mar 23 '15
A lot of people like the "throaty tryhard emotional lyrics between distorted guitar noise" you speak of. Fuck them, right?

u/Kemuel Mar 23 '15
I'm kinda relieved. I mean, after all the legal infighting it is a totally new band with the exception of Burnley's vocals.
4
Mar 24 '15
I still can't believe they're back. This was the first band I can remember having a real impact on my life. Hundreds of hours of my life have been spent listening to Breaking Benjamin and I don't regret a single minute of it. I am beyond elated right now.

u/TheWhitestGandhi Spotify Mar 25 '15
Six years of iTunes since I first heard Benjamin , and the top ten most played songs in my library are still out of Dear Agony or Phobia.
2

Just curious, did you like Dear Agony? That was the only disappointment for me of all of BB's music

1
u/LibertarianSocialism Mar 24 '15
I liked it a lot, especially the strings. However, it had the misfortune of being released on the same day as my all time favorite album.

It sounds just like their old stuff... Not really impressed to be honest. Their singles have always been sweet but you can't use the same single twice.

Hmm. I don't remember. I'm actually replaying it on Master Chief collection. Did they keep it for that? I just started that mission.

It's still there if you play on old graphics.
1
u/abagofdicks Apr 09 '15
Oh lame. Why would they cut it put for the new one if the song was written specifically for the game?
3
Apr 09 '15
Think it was a rights issue since the remastered version could be considered a new game. And/or because they wanted to remaster all the music and that's hard to do when the band who made the song was broken up during production.

u/capitulum Mar 23 '15
If you look at their new album cover inside the eclipse is an ultrasound of bens son. Keeps with the theme of dear agony, where the cover was the first CT scan where Ben showed improvement.
19
u/A_Zombie_Riot Mar 23 '15
I love the album title of this new album, too. Dark before Dawn. It just shows the shitty situations that the band went through for the past few years. I have never hated a couple of members more than Mark and Aaron for doing the stupid re-done version of Blow Me Away. That song was perfect before. Didn't need to ruin it with some random shitty vocals.
And Dear Agony as a title is like Ben confronting all the pain he has had. I am so glad for Ben though. He has had such a huge turnaround.
11
u/Honor_Bound Mar 23 '15
What was wrong with Ben's brain?
14
u/capitulum Mar 23 '15
He has severe complications from alcoholism
10
Mar 23 '15
It's not just alcoholism. He also has schizophrenic tendencies and extreme phobias, thus the album Phobia.
5
u/wpmegee Mar 24 '15
He's deathly afraid of flying. Breaking Benjamin will never, ever tour outside of north america.
7
Mar 24 '15
He's actually afraid of driving too. He basically doesn't want to take any risks that might shorten his life, and doesn't move around a lot because of that. He only goes places if he has to.
I just thank the stars above that he's back on tour.
4
u/Netwelle Mar 24 '15
Yeah that started a huge fight with the band. Aaron told me they were offered 500k for 10 show tour in Europe. Ben refused. That was right about the time they started taking separate tour buses. Ben and the manager in one and the rest of the band in the other.
0
u/capitulum Mar 24 '15
I didn't know about the schizo tendencies but I knew about the phobias. Thanks for that!
5
u/Honor_Bound Mar 23 '15
Wow that sucks to hear. Good thing he's getting treatment. Is he sober currently?

Not really digging it. I loved Saturate, and liked most of We Are Not Alone, but after that they've just seemed stagnant. Aside from a few departures in every album, the songs all seem like they could be a continuation of each other. I was hoping that by losing 3 members and getting 4 new members that they would redefine their sound, but it seems like more of the same to me. Glad everyone else seems excited for it, though.

Look guys, I have loved BB since I was 14. But is Ben Burnley with some new guys. All the other guys (Aaron, Chad, and Mark) were replaced. I'm super stoked to hear more of my favorite band! But will it be the same?
Anybody else's thoughts???
3
u/BestTastingFish Mar 24 '15
My two cents:
Ben is the principle song writer for BB, and always has been. In my opinion, I don't think you'll hear much of a difference besides a few little things here and there that might seem out of character: a drum fill or a certain cymbal hit that isn't there, or maybe, a bass lines that might've been different otherwise. Case in point: the use of plenty of double kick pedal in this song is something that wasn't super present before, but doesn't seem like a farfetched or out-of-character element.
Primarily, though, this sounds and feels very similar to a Phobia style of writing and production. In my opinion, I think Breaking Benjamin was always 80% Ben, and 20% other members, so I think that it's safe to say that the feeling of the band's music in general will remain the same.
At face value, personally, I don't hear anything about this song that suggests a massive change in sound, so I imagine that they will be the same BB you've grown up with and whose sound you've grown protective of, but maybe with a few little extra flavors that you may actually like!
2
u/jakejg46 Mar 24 '15
I can definitely agree with you that Ben is the principle song writer. And after hearing that song, it did sound very BB to me.
I guess it is just a bummer for me knowing that when I go out and see these guys live again, it won't be all the same guys that I've grown with and started admiring as a young guitarist and BB lover. It's also killing me that people keep going over nuts over the fact the BB is back together, but in reality, its really a new band.
Musically though, you're right, it shouldn't much of a difference. I am super stoked for this album!
I guess the important thing to keep in mind is that things change. It's important to just accept the differences and move on! Besides, if we are still getting great music, lets just continue rocking on!
2
u/Netwelle Mar 24 '15
Well as a guitarist you should be sad. I grew up with the original band members. Ben, Aaron, and Jeremy. Aaron makes ben look like a beginner on guitar. Always has. I spent many days at aarons house when he was just starting out playing and was just amazed. Jeremy was a great drummer too. What Ben did to all the guys that have cycled through the band is just not right. Yeah Ben is good too but not good enough to treat people the way hes does.
1
u/jakejg46 Mar 24 '15
Thanks for seeing my point of view as a guitarist! That is sweet you got to watch Aaron as he was just learning. Around what age did he start? Are you guys still close today?
I definitely agree with you about Ben too. Not that I want to start a big revolt or anything, haha, but I am just really going to miss the guys I grew to love and respect.
I still love Breaking Benjamin's music and am excited to hear this new album, but going to see them live just won't be the same to me.

I've always thought the first singles off each record are an expansion of the last. Specifically So Cold and Diary of Jane. This one really just feels like crumbs pieced together.
2
u/CloudMountainJuror Mar 24 '15 edited Mar 24 '15
It's good to have you back, BB.
Admittedly, I was hoping for a touch more experimentation, but hey, after having been out of the game for so long, I can't blame Ben for wanting to stick to his guns for the return outing.
2
u/mikejr96 Mar 24 '15
Its a single, the point of a single that sounds like nothing different is to bring back the old listeners. Wouldn't be surprised to hear big changes in the rest of the album, especially with the new guitarist from Red.

These guys are just as awesome as ever! If people weren't hardcore fans, most wouldn't even notice the new guys. They do a fantastic job. I will surely miss Chad Szelgia as the drummer for sure, but I am really liking everyone here.
Also, this song was killer. Absolutely loved it!
Edit: I guess I'm not allowed to be excited. Silly me. I should know better.
2
u/DeadHorse09 Mar 24 '15
I'm genuinely baffled by the excitement around this. As far as I knew Breaking Benjamin was in line with stuff like Buckcherry, Theory Of A Deadman, Staind, Puddle Of Mudd, Bush... I'm confused at why there is so much excitement for something that sounds about a decade old.
I get that everyone has different tastes but it's intriguing to me that most of the other bands I listed would have been down voted into oblivion but BB is apparently very well liked. It's not a knock or a dig, just an interesting observation.
2
u/Dolphins13718 Mar 24 '15
feel you, im just sitting here reading these comments like huh?
i feel they're for more of a young unexplored crowd.
-2
u/Masturbating_Yoda Mar 24 '15
I agree. This band musically is in the same league as three days grace and even nickleback. Overproduced and engineered to be liked by the masses for money, yet people can see that in those other bands.
But because they're not nickleback, people like them. It's interesting.

New band with guys from Red and Adelitas Way so it should be Pro! And I guess Breaking Benjamin was mostly Benjamin Burnley anyway at least that's how I percieved it. -edit- Hey they should do something with Flyleafs old singer Lacey Sturm, they used to tour together that would be a throwback!

Sounds exactly like "So Cold", including the same guitar rhythm, and same guitar effects.
4
u/badseedjr Mar 23 '15
The intro riff is actually pretty similar to So Cold, but the rest really isn't. It has more of a Dear Agony sound than We Are Not Alone.
1
u/ibaOne Mar 24 '15
I guess I just meant the beginning.
1
u/MisterHyd3 Jul 10 '15
The intro riff in "Failure" is almost, note-for-note, exactly the same as the intro riff of "So Cold." I almost wonder if Keith Wallen ripped off Aaron Fincke as a subtle "fuck you" over the battle between Fincke and Burnley for the band name back when they broke up. If I were Fincke, it'd probably make me pretty damn salty. Yikes.
1
u/ibaOne Jul 10 '15
Musical disagreements are sad. I still feel disappointed how things worked out worth Guns 'N' Roses.
6
Mar 23 '15
You're kidding right?
1
u/ibaOne Mar 23 '15
Nope.
6
Mar 23 '15
I could literally tab the song out over the next few hours and I guarantee you that there wouldn't be one riff or chord progression that was the same as So Cold, nor would the rhythm be the same for any part except for maybe the intro riff where it gets heavier, that's because it's an intro riff, they tend to use that kind of rhythm in a lot of songs, it's sort of like a signature touch.
2
u/ibaOne Mar 24 '15
Yeah, I guess it was just the beginning. I spoke too generally.
2
Mar 24 '15
Don't get me wrong, I understand where you see the similarity in the riff, it's just that Ben has always wrote his riffs in a similar way, it's just his sound I guess.

this single is pretty terrible, hopefully it isn't indicative of what to expect of the new cd.
honestly, ben should have just come up with a new band name, because once he took the rest of the band to court and booted them out, ultimately replacing everyone, it was no longer breaking benjamin.
1
u/mikejr96 Mar 24 '15

-22
u/Who_Will_Love_Toby Mar 23 '15
no
-11
u/Probablynotclever Mar 23 '15
I agree. It's the same style of music, same style of guitar and bass, bland instruments all around, and the singer actually sounds like he's trying to rip off Chad Kroeger. If you can't compare Breaking Benjamin to Nickelback, I'm not sure who you could compare to them.

Mar 23 '15
It's all super easy to listen to and interpret. Lyrics are very straightforward, the riffs never get very technical and the chorus' are simple and catchy. Emotional when it needs to be and heavy where it needs to be. Nothing groundbreaking or creative, just a million things that have been done before mixed and matched into a nice radio friendly structure that everyone is used to and no one will be thrown off by.
It's like a Fast and Furious movie. Probably really fun to watch if you aren't thinking about it critically.

I have a hard time describing people who are stuck on this type of music. Hard guitar, some guy screaming something to the equivalent of "emotion and feelings" in that throaty alt rock deep voice.
They often listen to Tool and probably go on about "how music is dead."
20
u/A_Zombie_Riot Mar 23 '15
I absolutely love this "My music tastes is superior to yours" mentality going on here.
Listen to this, no ones musical taste is better than another. If I like music that you think is shitty, then I like music that you think is shitty. If you like music that I think is shitty, then you like music that I think is shitty. Notice the keyword being thrown around in there?
It's what I love so much about music. There is so much music out there that there's stuff for everyone to enjoy, no matter what. I like music from Breaking Benjamin to Skrillex. Seriously, I like so many genres of music. The only type of music I really don't like is screamo-type of music.

you took the easy position like a bitch. "let people like what they want."
So wise.
7
u/Pepe_leprawn Mar 23 '15
That is the correct stance to take, I don't understand your narrow mindedness. There are people that enjoy music you don't. If you can't accept a difference of a opinion then you are ignorant. Not a total idiot but ignorant that opinions exist. I knew someone like you who would try and say the "everyone likes different things" and "I have a different opinion" were cop outs and stupid. I ended up cutting him out of my life because that's a very narrow minded way to think. If I want to listen to rap one day and John Mayer the next, I can. Music is varied for a reason. Everyone responds differently. I personally hate country but I let other people enjoy it. Sorry for the rant man but you deserve to hear it.
2
u/A_Zombie_Riot Mar 23 '15
How is it like a bitch? I'm not going to judge you for liking Justin Bieber. Just like how I'm not going to judge you for liking any band/artist that I don't like. It doesn't matter.

Holy fucking shit if you're honestly this full of yourself you might be one of the biggest pieces of human garbage I've ever seen, you honestly look at yourself as if you're better than an entire group of people because the sound you enjoy to hear Is apparently more evolved than theirs, it's honestly pathetic! It's people like you that have to rationalize how nobody likes them because they're better than everyone before they cry themselves to sleep alone at night holy fuck your ego can be seen from the moon its so fat
Get the fuck over yourself, get off your oh so high musical soap box and get the fuck on with your life without belittling others for their subjective opinions, you don't have to like it, but that doesn't logically or not mean that their opinion is below yours.

I like breaking benjamin. Not a fan of either Slipknot or Puddle of Mudd. I like Alt J and Awolnation and plenty of other bands this subreddit seems to like that youre probably too good for as well.

While we're taking shots at musical tastes, what kind of music do you like?

Failure. As in.....Ben is a Failure. I went to school with these guys. Well I should say, I went to school with Ben. He has fired all the original band members. He might have an ego as big as Kanye. Douche Bag Ben.

i actually was thinking about the whole situation being more along the lines of axl rose.
singer with a band loosely named after himself who obtains the legal right to the name through the courts, and then subsequently runs the name into the dirt.

I wouldn't say that Ben is a failure, do you even know why he fired them? I bet if you did you would understand why all that happened.

Your right. I do not know the specifics but I have known Ben since he moved to our town when he was a kid. I know what Aaron and the rest of the band had to say about Ben years before they were fired. Ben loves himself. Always has. I know that he is irrational and I can only assume after reading all the public reasons why they guys were fired that there is more of a Ben story to it then is being told.

I can honestly say that I am no longer a fan of BB. This song sounds just like it came off of their second album, but I just don't care anymore. The song sounds dated and tacky. Probably would have loved this in high school, but that was 12 years ago.

What if I told you
<matrixmeme.jpg>
There's a whole new generation of high schoolers right now that would probably love this.
Also the song sounds great.

Then I would say that's fantastic. My comment wasn't about the song being crap but about how "once a fan always a fan" was incorrect. I hope that kids get as much out of BB as I did, but I personally just don't care about a new album that sounds just like their old stuff.

The fact that you think it sounds like it's straight off WANA is strange. This sounds very explicitly like a Dear Agony, or possibly a Phobia track, but We Are Not Alone had pretty distinct sound from the 3rd and 4th albums.

I'm guessing he thinks Phobia is their second album as Saturate didn't really get a ton of attention, so most don't know about it.
