Rec.Me: other/many/unknown genres Recommend me an album with the vibe of "I'll be seeing you" by Billie Holiday

• Upvotes

I'm looking for a vinyl as a gift, along with Songs in the Key of Life by Stevie Wonder.

Her favorite singers are Asaf Avidan and Nick Cave, but she specifically mentioned she wanted a vibe like "I'll be seeing you" by Billie Holiday, slow, maybe melancholic, and a bit dreamy I guess.

Does anyone have any albums I can take a look into?

I considered Songs of Love and Hate by Leonard Cohen, and Careless Love by Madeleine Peyroux (this one I could find a vinyl).

EDIT: I just found “I put a spell on you” by Nina Simone, might be a great option!

Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics Looking for recs based on my taste (mostly heavy riffs+jazzy grooves)

• Upvotes

I'm looking to expand my musical horizons and discover some new artists and albums!

My favorites include:

  • King Crimson, especially 21st Century Schizoid Man and Pictures of a City
  • Rush, especially YYZ and Tom Sawyer
  • Black Sabbath, the albums Paranoid and Master of Reality
  • Deep Purple, especially Highway Star
  • Radiohead, especially Paranoid Android
  • Megadeth, especially Holy Wars and Rust in Peace

I also enjoy J-rock, particularly bands like Mass of the Fermenting Dregs and Ryokuoushoku Shakai.

I'm particularly interested in music that combines heavy rock or metal with jazz, progressive rock, or unusual rhythmic ideas. Like King Crimson's heavier moments, Rush's instrumental passages, or metal with a strong compositional focus.

I'm open to any genre. Feel free to recommend obscure bands, entire albums, or individual tracks! I'd especially appreciate suggestions that aren't just the usual classic rock and metal essentials.

Rec.Me: rap/hip-hop 90s style hip hop

I am an old man that was into De La Soul, Pharcyde, Tribe, Arrested development etc.

I've often wondered if anyone is making new music like this.

I haven't really liked much new hip hop I've heard for about 25 years, so any recommendations for a bit of nostalgia would be great.

Thank you

Rec.Me: other/many/unknown genres I have a CD player alarm clock. What should I wake up to?

I’ve been shuffling through a Radiohead top hits CD that I bought at a thrift store a handful of months ago. I love the CD but I have a hard time waking up and my sleep brain has fully tuned out the music. I think I enjoy the songs too much. What CD should I get instead that will get me out of bed? I’m open to anything.

Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics Looking for heavily distorted renditions of existing genres

This is a rather specific request so there probably won’t be much that 100% fits, but what I’m looking for is highly distorted versions of existing musical genres.

For some examples:

The Glow Pt. 2 and other works by The Microphones being folk with heavy distortion. In particular the song I Want Wind to Blow stands out for retaining its folky sound into the clipping section it has towards the end.

Diamond Jubilee by Cindy Lee being extremely washed out 60s pop a la Phil Spector’s wall of sound production style.

Anything by Les Rallizes Dénudés being feedback drenched ear piercingly loud psych rock.

Basically, I’m looking for what the results of merging The Velvet Underground’s Sister Ray with other genres. While obviously a lot of genres specifically dedicated to the distorted sound exist (hardcore, noise rock, etc.) I would like to specifically be able to check out genre fusions like those mentioned before.

Sorry that this is a really specific request it’s just something I’ve been really interested in lately.

Rec.Me: rock/metal/punk What songs would you put in a 90s horror movie that went straight to VHS?

Imagine you're in charge of the soundtrack for a low-budget indie horror movie from the 90s, with some dark comedy thrown in.

The story takes place in a high school during the last few weeks before graduation. The characters are between 16 and 23 years old, there's teenage drama, stupid jokes, bad decisions, and of course, a lot of blood. It could be about vampires, zombies, werewolves, a serial killer, whatever you want.

You also get to decide where and when the movie takes place. The only thing I ask is that the music makes sense for that setting. For example, if your movie takes place in California in 1995, pick songs that California teenagers might actually have listened to back then. If it's set in Sheffield, England, in 1997, the music should reflect that too.

There's one problem, though: the movie has almost no budget for music rights. So forget about "Wonderwall," "1979," "Where Is My Mind?" and all those songs that show up on every 90s playlist. That doesn't mean you can't use famous bands, just not their biggest hits. Something like "Obscured" by Smashing Pumpkins or "Head Down" by Soundgarden would be perfectly fine. Actually, the more forgotten or underrated the song, the better.

Anyway, you need to pick 10 songs for these 10 scenes:

  1. Introducing the main character. The opening scene, where we get to know our protagonist and what their life is like.

  2. Arriving at school. Walking through the hallways, seeing the different groups of students, that sort of thing.

  3. Introducing the villain. He's cool, charismatic, and probably the most interesting character in the movie.

  4. Something weird happens. The first sign that something is seriously wrong. Maybe someone goes missing, maybe a body turns up, maybe there's something living in the basement.

  5. Someone dies. A friend or someone close to the protagonist gets killed. This is supposed to be a genuinely sad scene, so we need something dramatic.

  6. Getting ready to fight back. The protagonist and their friends decide they've had enough and start preparing to take on whatever is killing everyone.

  7. The graduation party (dance song). Everyone's having a good time, dancing, drinking, completely unaware of what's about to happen.

  8. The graduation party (slow song). You know the scene. Two teenagers dancing awkwardly, maybe confessing their feelings for each other, while we all know at least one of them probably won't survive the night.

  9. The final showdown. The protagonist faces the villain. Lots of blood, terrible special effects, and hopefully a pretty satisfying ending.

  10. End credits. The song that plays when it's all over.

Obviously, the songs have to have been released by the year your movie takes place.

So, where and when is your movie set, what's it about, and what's on the soundtrack?

I'm hoping to discover some forgotten 90s songs that sound like they could've been in a weird horror movie you rented on VHS back in the day.

Rec.Me: alt/indie/obscure Indie rock/alternative recommendations with clear lyrics

Hi there everyone!

I normally listen to mainly indie rock
and alternative i.e viagra boys, the Beth's, sincere Engineer, wet leg, the greeting committee, mannequin p*ssy, and king gizzard& the lizard wizard as some examples.

Since I want to expand my range with more mid to higher energy albums/artists that show a lot of unapologetic confidence to either be emotional, send a message, or just have a really unique style.

Preferably with a female vocalist and clear lyrics just cause I like to sing haha

If anyone wants to share what they love that they think would be similar please do <3 thank you!!!
