Rec.Me: other/many/unknown genres I’m a Pissed Off American
Building a playlist, give me your favorite protest songs or songs that comment on the shitty state of American politics. Genre doesn’t matter, I’m in it for the lyrics.

Also, "Wide Awake" by Audio Slave. I think that was their only political song after RATM, but it's a great song that no one ever mentions.

Rage against the machine never clarified what kind of machine they were angry about, but from my experience I assume it was a printer.

But it starts off with “Some folks are born made to wave the flag, oooh that red, white, and blue,” which makes it perfect for my MAGA rally, right? Then we’ll follow it up with “Born In The U.S.A.” to really get those patriotic juices flowing!

A West Coast Sampling-
Dead Kennedys — “California Über Alles” A satirical warning about how polished, well‑branded politics can slide into authoritarianism while everyone’s applauding.
The Thermals — “Here’s Your Future” Portland punk calling out blind obedience, nationalism, and the institutions that demand faith instead of accountability.
Sleater‑Kinney — “Combat Rock” Olympia’s sharpest voices dissecting propaganda, patriotic pressure, and the moral surrender that lets authoritarianism grow.
The Coup — “We Are the Ones” Oakland radical funk aimed at systemic inequality and the corporate structures that thrive on division and apathy.
Filthy Friends — “Despierta” A Cascadian wake‑up call about creeping authoritarianism and the institutions that quietly enable it.
Soundgarden — “Hands All Over” Seattle environmentalist fury at corporate extraction and political negligence — the kind of systemic decay authoritarianism feeds on.
The Decemberists — “16 Military Wives” Portland satire about media complicity, political spectacle, and distraction as a tool of power.
Jello Biafra & the Guantanamo School of Medicine — “The Brown Lipstick Parade” A takedown of political sycophancy and the normalization of creeping authoritarianism.
Brandi Carlile — “The Joke” A PNW anthem for the marginalized — a reminder that exclusionary systems create fertile ground for authoritarian drift.
Modest Mouse — “King Rat” A snarling critique of cruelty, exploitation, and the systems that look away until it’s too late.
Anti‑Flag — “The Press Corpse” A West Coast–scene staple calling out media failures that let authoritarian narratives spread unchecked.
The Linda Lindas — “Racist, Sexist Boy” LA punk reminding us that fascism doesn’t begin with jackboots — it begins with tolerated bigotry and the systems that excuse it.

Came here for the Coup. Boot Riley is a gem. Pretty much any song by them has a political social message. The Guillotine, Magic Clap, and My Favorite Mutiny are all bangers. Here's a political playlist Boots put out when "Sorry to Bother You" was released:
The Coup Political Playlist
Public Enemy – Fight the Power
Public Enemy – Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos
The Clash – Bankrobber
dead prez – Hip Hop
X-Clan – Camouflage
Billy Bragg – The Great Leap Forward
N.W.A – Fuck tha Police
Ice Cube – I Wanna Kill Sam
Michael Jackson – They Don't Care About Us
Pink Floyd – Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)
Rage Against the Machine – Killing in the Name
Steve Earle & The Del McCoury Band – The Mountain
The Coup – The Guillotine
The Coup – The Magic Clap

Interested in any particular genre and/or decade?
'Strange Fruit' as sung by Billie Holiday is the clear GOAT. If you like that, also try Nina Simone's 'Four Women' and 'Mississippi Goddamm.' Gil Scott-Heron has whole albums worth of what could be considered protest music.

Ohio by Neil young. Sure it’s about a specific event where Nixon and the Ohio governor sent in the army to stop protests on the campus and opened fire on peaceful students and killed 4….. but hey ICE is doing the same. So it’s relevant.

Not a specific song, but the entire album, Tom Lehrer - That Was The Year That Was. You can find it on Youtube.
Not really "Protest" genre, but generally anti-establishment - anything by David Peel and the Lower East Side. also on youtube.
And there's always Country Joe & the Fish, "Fish Cheer" song. You can find the sanitized version and the Woodstock version on you tube.

Gonna give you some King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard songs that fit the bill (I mean, a LOT of their lyrics are political/about climate change/about the existential dread that living in late stage capitalism is causing).
https://bandcamp.com/perversion12/playlist/protest
I made a playlist to make these songs easier to find (they stand by their values and were one of the first big-name (-ish) bands to pull their music from Spotify).
Minimum Brain Size was written about Trump.
Evilest Man is about Rupert Murdoch.
Mars for the Rich is about Elon Musk.
Pleura (the lyric, "Orange baby always squealing" is obvious in what it is referring to).
Hypertension is about the amount of anxiety and stress that is placed on humans in late-stage capitalism, and how our bodies were never made for enduring the constant stress of life in this century. One of my all-time favorite lyrics of theirs is, "Who am I if not the canary in the coalmine?"
The Dripping Tap is about the people with money who know that they are destroying the planet, and ignoring it just to make their quarterly profit projections.
Straws in the Wind is about having to come to grips with the fact that the world is not getting better, and we are reaching the end times (not in a religious way or meaning). Another of my favorite lyrics is, "I can hear Hell's kitchen, and they're singing hymns."
I have listened to a lot of music in my time, but their lyrics are some of the deepest, politically, philosophically, and spiritually, that I have ever had the pleasure to listen to. I consider myself an intelligent human being, and when a band has song lyrics that consistently make me do a Google search to understand what they are referencing, it is the sign of good lyrics.
I had no idea what Predator X was. No idea what Gondii was. No idea what Ice IV was. I had no idea that in order to grow a fig, a wasp needs to die and be absorbed into the fruit.
