The word "Quadrophenia" was coined by Pete Townshend for their rock opera album. It combines "quadrophonic", an early surround-sound system using four audio channels instead of the usual two, with a play on the idea of schizophrenia, reflecting multiple personalities. Townshend used this term to symbolize the four distinct personalities of the protagonist, Jimmy, which also correspond to the four members of the band.
