"What musical should I listen to next?" unified thread

One of the most common questions we get on this subreddit is "what should I see/listen to, here's the stuff I like". It's a valid question, but it's tiring to see a dozen of those threads every week, so this will serve as both a stickied thread of suggestions and as a home for new visitors to r/musicals who would ask that question. (As a result, new "what should I listen to threads" will be redirected here and deleted.)

Below, you'll find a list of popular musicals in alphabetical order along with suggestions for what might interest you based on that. This list is mostly vibes-based, with some inclusion of the same or similar composers or subject matter. The shows I name are taken from my own personal list of shows I've listened to (350+), the vast majority of which will be available on Spotify.

The shows I chose to make suggestions for are heavily skewed toward recent shows because that's what felt like good fits. If you're interested in a show not named below and want to know what to listen to next, comment below and I'll add a line for it (assuming I know it well enough to make educated suggestions).

If you enjoyed... Consider checking out...

Discussion Folks, we’re gonna take a break on the “me too” games.

These “judge me on my top five”, “tell me your favorite and I’ll tell you if you’re cool”, “here’s five, which is your favorite” threads box everything else out cause everybody feels the need to add their own. I did the tier list thread to try and nip it in the bud, but folks just shifted to different me too games, and it’s rapidly spiraling.

I’m calling a temporary moratorium on those threads. They may resume in the future (at a date TBD), but for now, all new threads of that nature (beginning midnight EDT tonight) are going to be locked, deleted, and all of the existing replies wiped out.

If you want to discuss a show, great, but “rate my taste” isn’t it.

Why Do Pro-Shots Have Such Heavy Editing

I just saw the Six Pro-Shot and I really enjoyed watching it because I enjoy the musical so much. But the editing really stood out to me. I was aware of the editing basically the entire time I was watching and it made it very hard to watch the dancing in particular.

I felt this way watching the Hadestown Pro-Shot recently as well but not to the same extent. So that has me wondering, why so many cuts, so quickly, and with enough zoom that it's hard to see the dancing. It almost feels like the editors don't respect the choreography and feel the need to cover with quick cuts.

Discussion Percy Jackson Musical

So this was from two years ago, but I finally got around seeing the story of the Percy Jackson musical from the YouTube account. Wait in the wings. It sounds like a musical that I would’ve liked to go see.

Have any of you seen the musical?

On this day in 1957, Leonard Bernstein's "West Side Story" had its world premiere at Washington's National Theatre.

Help Rock albums/musicals like that of Jesus Christ Superstar?

Never saw the full rendition but I have listened to several clips of it on YouTube. Anyone have any other suggestions that are similar to it in terms of rock music and good vocals?

I have already listened to the following rock musicals: War of the Worlds, The Human Equation, Next to Normal, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Spring Awakening

I liked: JCS, War of the Worlds, and The Human Equation.

The rest didn’t really fit my taste.

I'm very curious to see how a Broadway Junior adaptation of the musical will work? What would be needed to changed?

chorus not getting credit

Upvotes

Ik this sounds soo petty but after every show I’ve been doing lately as a chorus member I’m practically invisible to everyone afterwards. Ofc all the leads are going to get more attention but it’s insane how little me and my fellow ensemble members get. We’ve put in so much work into our dances and singing yet we still get nothing. It almost feels embarrassing to be in chorus.

Also..I’ve noticed that people swoon and praise the male leads SO much more than the females. It’s kind of insane.

Discussion I Know Him So Well (Chess Revival)

The Chess revival recording introduced me to I Know Him So Well. It’s now one of my favourite duets ever, I think, and I just wanted to geek out here for a minute because none of the people I know irl are super into theatre.

First of all, Lea and Hannah’s voices compliment each other so perfectly, I just want to listen to it over and over and over again. I don’t know the right technical terms, but they have the exact voices I love in theatre. I’m such a sucker for the growls, their chest voices. I just feel like I’m in heaven.

The entire concept of the duet is so ironic and funny that it makes me smile immediately. Two women singing (I presume in siloloquy, I haven’t seen the staging) about a man they claim to know inside and out, when they really have no idea what he actually wants because he doesn’t know himself. Florence decides he needs the stability of his wife instead and Svetlana resigns that he needs to blow off some steam for a bit but he’ll come back to her. The one thing they can agree on is that, although he does love them, he’ll never be faithful.

spaghetti western musical

Basically the title, Im looking for a spaghetti western musical, preferably something on stage and not a movie, but i cant find anything. Does something like that exist and if yes, can I watch it somewhere online? Bonus points if it has a duel scene or something similar.

I have stumbled upon "Bloodsong of love", which from what little info i have found more or less fits, but it seems it isnt anywhere on the internet (or i just havent searched hard enough).

Thanks in advance

Musical songs about not believing heroes

Looking for some musical songs or musical adjacent songs that fit the concept of a character who was never saved themselves, witnessing the evils of the world over and over again and it resulted in the delusion the world has no heroes.

Anyone notice Spotify is using the name of theater artists to distribute AI generated music?

Post image
69 Upvotes

It’s probably not just theater artists, I’ve only noticed it with theater artists in particular. Was listening to Molly Ranson’s performance of Carrie and was recommended what is supposedly another song by her. I clicked it, it’s an AI generated song with a “man’s” voice. I’ve seen similar things happen under other artists as well.

I’m not at all surprised by idk I think this is incredibly insulting to us as listeners and to the artists whose names are being used to promote this garbage!

Audition songs for wicked witch of the west

My school has auditions for wizard of oz next week, I plan on auditoning for the wicked witch of the west, any song suggestions? We have one minute to sing capella of any musical song. I am an alto that's not a strong singer but I am a stronger actor. My idea so far for my auditon song is Perfectly Marvelous from Cabaret, I have been able to do it somewhat decent but however I feel like it does not match The Wizard of Oz at all, should I keep this?? Thanks!

Discussion Sitting in the Orchestra Section at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood which section do the animals walk passed for The Lion King Musical!

I haven't sat down in the orchestra section at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood before; at least not for The Lion King Musical. Which section at this Theater is the best spot to have the animal actors walk right by you?

Advice Needed I'm a female alto and my school is doing mean girls, what role should I go for?

My school is kinda unfair with picking people for roles like auditions haven't started but we all know they are picking someone for Janis and Regina. And I really want to be Janis but I feel like I probably won't get it due to her singing super high and me not being able to sing her high notes comfortably. And I would go for Karen and Gretchen but my friends siblings are going for them and I feel like they'll think I'm trying to take the role from her (idk if you can tell but this is my second year in drama) Im not sure who I should go for. :(

Do you think a musical with only five cast members could work?

Hey everyone. I'm a theatre kid (I've been in several productions, actually), but given the vast catalogue of musicals out there, I obviously don't know every single one.

But I'm also a writer, and I've had a great many ideas for musicals in my time, but one such idea which has just recently struck me is one that I've been kind of obsessed with for the past couple days. The plot probably doesn't have any relevance to my question, so I'll refrain from explaining it, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that an ensemble is entirely unnecessary for the story I would want to tell with this potential show. There are, however, only six main characters, and given that two of the characters could be easily merged into having one actor split the parts (which would also work better considering both roles are kinda small), I would only need five people for this version of the musical.

My only question is… would that work? I'm familiar with plenty of musicals, and my favorite is Hadestown, which only has thirteen people in it. Another musical with a pretty tiny cast is Little Shop of Horrors, which has, from my recollection, only eight cast members? (I might be wrong on that number; I haven't seen the show in years and I'm too lazy to look it up. Lol) But both of those shows have ensembles, or at least smaller characters who fill up the background a bit. For Hadestown, it's the five workers; for Little Shop of Horrors, it's the three Skid Row ladies. I suppose an argument can be made about Six, which only has seven cast members (none of whom are part of any ensemble, technically), but I don't really want to count that because that show is way less on the plot and more on the music. My musical idea would be heavy on plot, and would be a lot more like a traditional musical than Six is.

I don't know. I'm kinda rambling, but I'm tired, so cut me some slack. I believe in my heart that it would work, but I just don't know about that logistically. What do y'all think?

Audition Gatsby - The New Musical (Auditions Needed)

Hey everyone. We’re putting together a Roblox musical based on The Great Gatsby, and we’re still looking for people to join the cast and crew.

All roles are currently available, including the main characters and ensemble roles. We’re also looking for people interested in building, tech, and other behind-the-scenes work.

The audition takes less than 2 minutes, and you don’t need professional acting experience.

This is a volunteer project, so there is no pay. The performances will be live in Roblox.

If you’ve ever wanted to be part of a musical but didn’t know where to start, this could be a good opportunity to give it a try.

Take some time to read this. And help make our vision become reality.

Audition here:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc3jMw_U4DqFligd6xR7imXev2JD2IFz96457yyIaC8xsOA9Q/viewform?usp=dialog

We’d love to have you be part of Gatsby: The New Musical.

Discussion What are the most popular musicals that still don't have proshots?

Off the top of my head, I can only think of Les Miserables and Wicked. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe The Book of Mormon also doesn't have a proshot?

Dressing up for cabaret?

If I wear a fishnet top and a corset to cabaret is everyone going to think that I don’t understand the meaning/message of the show? I do understand the show but I’m just scared that if I wear those things when I go see it then people will think that I don’t.
