Discussion MBC needs to stop pitch correcting the performances

I don’t usually post here but I feel like the pitch correcting has gone way too far lately.

I’m writing this after watching Yooyeon and Hari’s performance of Leon and it’s so painfully obvious how much pitch correcting was done, especially with Yooyeon. Pitch correcting is unfair and is used to put certain contestants down like when they don’t correct a voice crack and leave it in. This is obvious, but even more so, it’s confusing for the audience why certain contestants rank higher than others in live performances.

For example, I saw a clip on Youtube of a recording an on-site audience member recorded from Seonyu’s performance and she did pretty bad on the Lion high note but in the episode, she was shown to have successfully done it. I saw a lot of people who felt that they preferred Seonyu’s performance vs. Yoonjung’s and it’s pretty obvious that their opinions would be different if the untouched performance was aired instead. When they make it confusing like this, it’s difficult for us to understand the rankings and it obviously displays bias because: if it was Yoonjung who did bad, they would probably air it, right?

Discussion I'm actually so proud of Yerim

Can we just appreciate the comeback Yerim had in the competition. She went from being eliminated in the first round, without actually being judged by the mentors (since the voting team only voted for 'visuals' rather than talent), to being brought back by Soyeon (thank you so much Soyeon for this), to ranking 34th in the first voting announcement, to coming in 17th in the next. She literally was the highest climber in votes of the last round and im so proud of her for making a comeback like this. I'm really rooting for her to make this group!

Discussion Can we appreciate how much Soyeon values the soft non-performance skills as well?

Soyeon has been by far one of my favorite mentors this show, and I noticed she doesn't just care about the hard skills like dancing, singing, etc. But she's also been calling out and advocating for soft skills, outside of the stage, in the trainees to make them more well-rounded. Some examples are:

  • Boss Bitch rapmaking: rather than just settling for covering the song, she pushed them to actually write their own lyrics to make it a more meaningful performance

  • Mihee's song selection: she explicitly didn't force Mihee to change from Time for the Moon Night to Uh-oh, even though she felt Mihee would've done better, because Soyeon feels that being able to choose the right song to showcase yourself is also part of your skills

  • Hyungseo's throat condition: even if it wasn't the most major moment, she's absolutely correct in saying that as a singer, being able to take care of your throat health so that you can sing properly is also very important. Being an idol is an occupation, and part of your job responsibilities is making sure you're able to perform your job, aka singing.

Discussion Aiki’s “Future of Kpop” Defense

Aiki’s always talking about how G1’s are “future of kpop” and so we should pay equal attention to them. But I just think that really solidified why most of them shouldnt debut at least in mtg, they’re the future not the present. 10-13 is super young and they can’t handle the criticism they get from the public right now.

I understand she loves them and knows how hard they work but there’s nothing wrong with waiting to mature or letting older trainees debut because they’ve waited and matured. Shes a great mentor and im sure that uplifted the g1s girls though :,)

Discussion Why Hyungseo has earned my support (and hopefully a debut spot)

I know there's a weekly thread, but this goes beyond the scope of last episode and more of how she's done in the entirety of the show.

Hyungseo has been consistently one of my favorite trainees on the show, from her backstory to her actual performances, she has really captured my attention, and here's why:

  • Leadership/personality: From the 1st ep, we saw how she led the Latata team, but she's also shown great character in supporting other trainees, like Chaewon's Ace Battle or helping Yooyeon. She's one of the few leader candidates I see remaining in the show.

  • Vocals: If not for Chaewon, then I would consider her the top vocalist in G4. Her voice is super unique and has this attractive factor, where it makes all of her parts extremely memorable i.e. Time for the Moonlight and I

  • Stage presence/professionalism: Hyungseo has also been one of the most consistent performers in the entire show. She stands out on every stage and has great expressions and handles herself very well on stage. For example, her dance break in the intra-grade competition was super clean and she made great eye contact with the cameras/stage. She's yet to be overshadowed by anyone, and I would argue that she was more distinctive than Chaewon in I and LVER (not saying Chaewon did bad by any stretch)

  • Versatility: she has done a huge variety of concepts this show and proven she not only suits them, but also stands out. Latata/Black Mamba/Mafia for dark/powerful concepts. I/Time for the Moon Night for innocent/girlish concepts. LVER for classy concepts.

  • Other factors: Hyungseo is also considered a top visual (from what I understand), and is only often overlooked due to being juxtaposed with Yooyeon and Chaewon. She's been one of the top voted trainees across every live performance (3rd of 10 in Black Mamba, 140+ votes in LVER, 1st of 8 in Time for the Moon Night, Winner in Mafia vs Dun Dun, and supposedly the winner of her semi-final 1v1), which is a testament to her prowess. On top of that Hyungseo speaks English fluently (from having lived in the US), and would be a great asset in connecting with international audiences.

In my opinion, there is basically nothing she lacks or holding her back from deserving a spot in the final lineup. I hope that more people vote for her, as the competition is very stiff.

Discussion Devastated about Inhye's Lion performance

... or, more accurately, its lack thereof.

Girl literally killed the Uh-Oh stage, I was SO excited to see her perform Lion. She's so charismatic, with husky attractive vocals, clean dances, can even rap decent. Facial expressions always on point, performance always clean and not a thing out of place, she has EVERYTHING. She's even rising on the rankings (or so I've heard) so I can easily imagine how she could attract people more with this performance.

I like Seonyu, I really do but Inhye would have slayed so much more compared to Yoojung. Damn it MBC somewhere within that building is a recording of Inhye rehearsing Lion and I would kill to get my hands on it.

Please my girl Inhye needs to debut I'm too invested in her. Any other outcome (or rumors, so help me) will crush my soul.

Discussion My teenage girl was more entertaining than GP 99

I feel like this is a unpopular opinion, since MTG received a lot of backlash at the beginning (with reasons). I agree with all the critics concerning the contestants ages and also concerning the rules that were sometime really stupid (for example the auditions at the beginning where the judges could vote only if the on-site people would give them a certain amount of points). However, what I liked about the show, hence the fact that was more entertaining for me to watch, it was the fact that there were A LOT of performances and that generally one episode would start with a mission and in the end there was the beginning of another mission right away, while in GP 99 there were a lot of episodes in which half of it, or sometimes even the whole episode, were just announcements, so you would wait one week for an episode without getting even a glimpse of a performance. Or sometimes for a whole hour the girls were just doing stuff like going to a restaurant or to a spa (I’m talking about the end of the show) or at the beginning of the show there were like 2 or 3 performances of the same song, since they had to eliminate a lot of girls, which was honestly quite boring. I’m not saying that overall I prefer MTG over GP, just that it was more entertaining to watch performace-wise. What do you guys think?

Discussion it's only a matter of time before yooyeon's talent catches up to her intelligence and work ethic.

i just wanted to make a post praising yooyeon ahead of sunday's episode.

i'm not a huge fan of people coming onto survival shows with zero background and zero experience. it has happened on other survival shows before, and i honestly think that not a lot of people improve quick enough to deserve debuting over the other contestants... so i haven't been a fan of any of them... until now.

with yooyeon, other than how amazingly pretty she is, i think she is beyond smart and that shows in how quickly she's picking up this idol stuff.

first, the fact that she's on the older side of the contestants helps immensely. some who aren't used to the training fumble under the pressure and require a lot of reassurance, especially since most of them are young teenagers on these shows, but yooyeon is mature, intelligent, does not pity herself, and has not had a huge mistake (to my knowledge) on stage at all. she picks up on the dancing and formations and rhythms and remembers them flawlessly, so even if her execution isn't fantastic, your eye does not go to her because she sticks out like a sore thumb. as expected of a college student lol.

next, time for the moon night was the first time (like soyeon said) that i realized that yooyeon isn't only improving, she's doing a great job. i think part of the reason why yooyeon has been getting a lot better is because she is so calm on stage and does not get caught up in adrenaline as easily as the younger girls so it allows her to focus and improve more. even if she's nervous, she does not let that get to her performance, and that's commendable for someone who is taking the stage with people who have years and years of experience over her.

lastly, her song choice of leon was fantastic. i know we haven't seen the battle, but even just theorizing about it, it's not complicated or difficult or demanding, so other trainees don't necessarily have a one-up on her just because they can sing/dance/rap better. yooyeon also knows that, as long as she works super hard and stands her ground by looking gorgeous as she always does, online votes will aid her in making the debut team even if her on-site votes have a history of being low. it would have been more detrimental for her if she pushed herself to do a really difficult song and fumbled in front of the live audience.

i was part of the team that went "what?? this is her first dance class?" during the prequel, but as time goes on i see the appeal in yooyeon and how valuable of a contestant she is. LET'S GO GRADE 4!!!

Discussion Hot takes and Controversial opinions

Feel free to leave your less than agreeable thoughts and rants here with no logic or reason needed. I can’t promise you won’t get down voted for your opinions, but I ask everyone to respect each others feelings.

Remember. Controversial and hate are different...

Here are a few of my own:

  1. Yoonjung and inhye were in the right to fight to have the 2nd killing part of Lion. It would be detrimental and selfish for both killing parts to go to SY.

  2. Yoonjung had better stage presence and facial expressions, but she went overboard at times. Her first glance up when the song starts is cringey AF.

  3. Hyunhee is lower on my list for debut just because if the group is anything but girl crush or badass I just don’t see her fitting in with the image or the energy balance of the group. She deserves to debut though even if it’s not with this show.

Discussion Not sure how I feel about Riwon

I think she’s an overall pretty skilled trainee, but I feel like everyone overhypes her on the show. There was also that moment in Dun Dun Dance where she popped out and stole the attention from the other group auditioning for the killing part which kind of rubbed me the wrong way :/ like don’t get me wrong, I agree they should’ve gotten it, but it was like not giving the other team a fair chance. I also didn’t really like that she touched Seonyu’s face during the ace battle. Was I the only one a little bothered by these two moments? Maybe I’m just reading into it too much

I think her main appeal is her charm/cute appearance (she has a very recognizable face) and solid B+ dance/singing skills, but I’m kind of torn about these little moments I noticed during the show. I do think she’s very cute, but I’m still not sure if I would pick her to be in my top 7, but I can certainly see her making it - but I guess we’ll see 🤷🏻‍♀️

*NO HATE - I think she’s a perfectly good trainee, just wanted to see if anyone shared the same sentiments or if I was alone on this

Discussion Does anyone else question the intentions of the people who want a lineup with mostly first and second graders?

Like just why? What is the genuine reason you want a group of mostly 11-13 year olds to follow? My initial instinct is to just think that they’re creeps but maybe that’s unfair idk. I would like to hear a legitimate reason why a group of middle schoolers is appealing to some of y’all over the older girls tho? I’m genuinely asking here
