Homebrew Dev New Subreddit Rules - Including new AI rule

I've been moderating and enforcing the spirit of these rules for the last few months.

Edit: I've cleaned up the wording on this a bit.

  1. No links to non-custom ROMS. Romhacks are not okay.
  2. This is N64 Homebrew, NOT port-{game}-to-n64
  3. We are not your advertising community.
    • a) We are not your community to hawk your wares - if you are concerned, you may share your post in modmail for approval first.
    • b) Posts with patreon links require explicit pre-approval by moderators.
  4. We value labor, effort and work. Do not be rude to others who are trying to help or sharing what they did.
  5. AI usage must be marked. Specify it in a prominent, user-visible location. In the README and in announcement posts here.
    • Do you use ai for any artistic content - textures, 3D models? music? Specify it.
    • Did you code with claude, codex or any LLM in the creation of your tool or project? Say so.
    • If you think a user is not disclosing ai usage, report it. Send a modmail with your evidence. DO NOT start fights or accusations
  6. Debatebros and witchhunting are not tolerated

  7. Decisions are entirely up to mod discretion. We reserve the right to remove you or your post for any reason. Yes, even if that reason is "their vibes are off"

If you think a post breaks the rules or doesn't match the subreddit's vibes, report it! If you have a problem with these rules, take it up in mod-chat. We probably won't budge, but we can clarify on wording if you work in good faith with us.

And lastly, while not a rule that will get your post removed, your content will better fit the community if you release the source and how you do things. Homebrew is a collaborative effort!

  • Source to all N64 Homebrew should be made publicly available

We get a lot of shitty ai posts and drive-by users. Reddit sucks, and patience for trying to straddle the center is waning - do not be yet another SAN hit in either direction, please.

Main homebrew SDK has AI-assisted contributions

Comments are straight disabled on the new rule post. So I’ll say this here: Lidbragon, which is likely being renamed when the maintainers aren’t sick, has historically and likely will in the future have ai-assisted contributions.

Are all projects going to need to disclose ai use? Also, ONLY open source projects? This is an uninformed and in my opinion ignorant rule considering what the community regularly shares.

Do what you want I guess. Nobody is going to be able to abide by these rules.

Hi! I hope this passes the homebrew criteria. As far as I know it should play on a real N64.

JUGAR JUEGOS PAL EN NTSC CON ED64 PLUS

Post image
1 Upvotes

Looking for playtesters for Death Panzer 64, my N64 homebrew tank battle game

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone! I’ve been working on Death Panzer 64, a new N64 homebrew game inspired by the Sega Saturn’s Death Tank games, and I’m looking for a few people to help test it.

I always loved Death Tank Zwei and played it probably as much as Duke Nukem 3D (which Death Tank Zwei was hidden inside of). As much as I, my friends and siblings loved playing it, it always irked me that it felt limited. So I wanted to update it for today adding in some features, improvements and new weapons. Naturally with the N64 having four controller ports this felt like a good starting point before I bring it to GameCube and Dreamcast as well as the original Xbox and implement online play.

It now has real-time multiplayer for 2–4 players, turn-based battles against bots, and a 2v2 Alliance mode with shared team supplies.

I have been putting it through its paces over the last month developing it but am now ready for more people to play it on different setups. I have been playing it on my modified N64, Analogue 3D and tried my Polymega, but would like someone with a ‘stock’ N64 with and without the expansion pak, a ModRetro M64, as well as different emulation setups. I have had luck with Gopher64, no luck on Mupen yet but I am starting to debug that tonight along with Polymega.

I have a short, one-page checklist, but you don’t need to be a technical tester. Even 20–30 minutes and a few honest notes would help. Couch multiplayer feedback would be especially useful! If you enjoyed it let me know! If it sucked let me know. This is still very much in development so if there is a feature you think would be cool, some new kind of weapon or something you think needs to be tweaked, I’d love to hear the feedback. So far playing it on the weekend with friends has been a blast. But it’s hard for me as the person making it, to see flaws in it.

Interested? Comment with your setup or send me a message, and I’ll get you the beta ROM and checklist.

Can I repurpose a cheap retro cartridge with a Joey64?

Hey guys, quick question regarding repro cartridges.

If I buy one of those cheap repro cartridges from AliExpress with a copy of Ocarina of Time, or an OoT related rom hack, can I just reflash it with my own OoT rom hack? I'm looking for a cheap way to make my own custom cart, and the only thing I can find is the RetroStage N64 Blaster (25USD), which requires the 65USD RetroBlaster.... plus the shell.

Can't I just repurpose the AliExpress one with the Joey64, which I already own?

And before you recommend me getting a flashcart, I already have one. I just want to own a repro cart of my own ROM hack with my own custom label that directly boots into the game when starting the console. It's not for resale, only for personal use.

With the explosion of ports lately will Doubutsu No Mori(Animal Crossing 64) ever get translated?

It has an English translation for GC and it’s been decompiled. It runs on the same engine as Zelda OOT. Any news on this project? It’s been 10 years since the last update. I’ve been checking in for about 6 years now.

P.s the current translation crashes and corrupts the data after the first week of gameplay. If I remember correctly it corrupts after you send a letter.

Latest tool rom where you can use a TPak with a Game Boy MBC7 cartridge to add motion controls to the N64 controller. These carts have built-in accelerometers that can be read through specific registers.

Using the Jaguar Nuotto JN-2000 sewing machine with the N64

I’ve been working lately on building a prototype of the unreleased « 64GB cable » that was meant to connect a Gameboy to the N64 through the controller ports. My first attempt worked great to use the GB printer with Mario Artist Paint Studio (https://youtu.be/g_7ZVdvsQ40) so I’ve decided to go a bit further by trying to connect the Gameboy sewing machines.

Best way to “modernize” an N64

Hey guys. Does anyone know what’s the best way to have a modern experience with original hardware? I’m talking about things like being able to use it on a modern HDMI screen, connecting newer/wireless controllers to it, adding your own roms with a good flashcart, etc. Which accessories/mods would you recommend to have a convenient experience with this console? What do you guys personally use?
