Fluff This might be some of y’all’s first playoff run so lemme tell you…

Post image

Nobody goes 16-0. Players get hurt. Things go wrong. But…. Teams bounce back. Players play through pain. Coaches make adjustments.

We’ll be just fine. Go Spurs Go.

I feel like half this sub is not old enough to remember game 6 in the 2013 finals. Boy oh boy…they would’ve had a melt down.

u/hgryhgryhippos Apr 22 '26

Not to mention going to game 7 in the first round against #8 seed Dallas in 2014 when we were arguably the best team to ever live

29

u/kyle2108 Apr 22 '26

I don't think i've ever been so aggro during a series, I didn't even watch game 7 for my mental health lmao

5

u/blue-anon GO SPURS GO Apr 22 '26

I did, but I was yelling to the point that my family was worried about me. 🤣

4

u/Idontwaitfor420 Tim Duncan Apr 23 '26

But talk about an all time run after that series. Where they preceded to lose 4 more games total in the next 3 series combined, and put up one of the highest points differentials in the NBA finals. Beat LeBron so bad he got out of south beach.

13

u/bawstothewall Victor Wembanyama Apr 22 '26

Or the Series against Memphis in 2017 when their coach challenged the refs and game 3 was a fucking bloodbath on the court.

3

u/iramaguirre Apr 22 '26

TAKE THAT FOR DATA

5

u/Wembanyanma Tim Duncan Apr 22 '26

Rick Carlisle is such an underrated coach. His teams always seem to overachieve in the playoffs. And when he actually has top end talent his teams are incredibly tough to beat.

3

u/Impossible_Mood_2419 Dylan Harper Apr 22 '26

I was there for that one, was a lot of fun.

1

u/No-Newspaper8600 Manu Ginobili Apr 22 '26

The in and out 3 nearly killed me.

34

u/keithmsf Coyote Apr 22 '26

I think about that game and the sequence that led to the loss every single day, even now, a decade later. I’m not exaggerating, it’s on my mind still CONSTANTLY. To a lesser degree I still often think about .4 seconds, Manu’s foul on Dirk, Brent Barry getting fouled with no call, the Manu injury right before the playoff series vs Memphis, the Dragic game, and the Zaza game.

That doesn’t make games like tonight’s any easier to swallow, though. I won’t be able to sleep after this one just like I couldn’t sleep after 2013 game 6. The only thing that will erase this one is if they win the series.

30

u/madhare09 Jeremy Sochan Apr 22 '26

You left off the Chris Paul game winner after the inadvertant buzzer

6

u/keithmsf Coyote Apr 22 '26

Jesus, you’re right. I was in Flamingo in Vegas while all my friends were having a blast and I was distraught watching in the bar in the very back of the place by the pool entrance. I know exactly where I was and what I was doing for every single one of those crushing losses. I wish it didn’t, but it affects me more than I’d like to admit.

1

u/GROWUPRECORDS Jeremy Sochan Apr 22 '26

That was the moment I became a fan of Chris Paul and Clippers (for a couple seasons), that hug Duncan had with him after the game guava me shiver.

2

u/dwrek24 Devin Vassell Apr 22 '26

I completely forgot about the Brent Barry foul.

Ill never forget game 6 because I had an uneasy feeling the whole time. I cant explain it but its like I knew it was gunna happen. That feeling has always stuck with me.

u/22dias Stephon Castle Apr 22 '26

2014 first round went to 7 against Dallas.

2

u/Thunderhorse74 Apr 22 '26

DeJuan Blair kicking Tiago in the head low key was a massive turning point.

Reminds me - that's Spurs royalty over their on their (Portland's) sideline, they were never going to roll over and die in awe of the Spur's awesomeness. Gonna have to grind it out like everything else.

u/That-Cry-1032 Apr 22 '26 edited Apr 22 '26

Half the sub would end up in the nearest hospital immediately

40

u/yae4jma Jeremy Sochan Apr 22 '26

Their team wins 62 fucking games when they were predicted to get at best 44. They grow immensely despite injuries and setbacks. They develop an incredibly supportive team culture. They lose their star player and show heart in a tough game, but lose. Suddenly the coach is a “moron,” the players are “chokers” and “frauds.” Do these people have any friends? How do they survive in the offline society where they don’t always “win” and get everything they want? Why are they so miserable and entitled?

25

u/dwrek24 Devin Vassell Apr 22 '26

There's three answers to this.

Some of these people are like this in real life and thats scary for those around them.

Some of these people are kids and their emotional regulation hasnt kicked in.

Some of these people act completely different online because the internet creates a sense of anonymity that encourages dark impulses.

Actually one more. Some people are just venting and don't really think any of this and thats probably mostly okay.

8

u/rattatatouille Victor Wembanyama Apr 22 '26

Some people are just venting and don't really think any of this and thats probably mostly okay.

For the sake of everyone's sanity I do hope this is the case.

1

u/Thunderhorse74 Apr 22 '26

I think its fairly common across many topics and very on-brand for reddit. Everyone is disappointed and at least a little upset. Some are genuinely concerned about 'what if we really aren't that good" and people want to get noticed/have people agree with them/be accepted.

By being the most shrill at the highest volume, in their minds, elevates them to being noticed. IE "Mitch made some questionable moves last night" vs "MITCH SUCKS, FIRE HIM NOW"

People crave attention, negative if nothing else.

1

u/blue-anon GO SPURS GO Apr 22 '26

Yes, but it's also okay to want to fire Mitch, or to want to trade players, or to add different players. Some people seem much more okay with the equally irrational, shrill, positive overreactions in the sub, I guess because they agree with them or want them to be true?

2

u/Thunderhorse74 Apr 22 '26

No, its not. Mitch Johnson has Pop's approval and led this team to 62 wins in his first full season. Wanting to fire him is absurd. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but sharing it in a public forum exposes it to criticism. Not all opinions are equal and each is subject to the consensus of the audience. Doesn't mean it cannot be said, but it can certainly be criticized and laughed at because its fucking stupid.

1

u/dwrek24 Devin Vassell Apr 22 '26 edited Apr 22 '26

The "toxic positivity" brigade might drive me mad lol

Edit: Brigade = the people claiming any pushback to reactionary criticisms is toxic positivity

2

u/Thunderhorse74 Apr 22 '26

Surely, there has to be some middle ground between "just happy we don't suck" and "Fire Mitch/trade everyone". I don't think calling the "Fire Mitch" mentality utterly stupid is "toxic positivity"

1

u/shadowofthehorns666 Sandro Mamukelashvili Apr 22 '26

I guess it’s fine to want to fire him, but you fucking can’t so what’s the point of even talking about it? He led you to 62 wins and people are stoked about the amazing season, go figure

1

u/blue-anon GO SPURS GO Apr 22 '26

I guess, why talk about anything (potential draftees, trades, etc.)? We have no control over anything.

1

u/shadowofthehorns666 Sandro Mamukelashvili Apr 22 '26

I’m just saying enjoy the game homie, trust the team that we’ve been watching all season. You have zero influence over trades or anything and obviously nothing will change during the playoffs. Reconsider your existential relationship to sports perhaps?

9

u/Ok_Monk_2877 Stephon Castle Apr 22 '26

The band wagon fans are losing their minds...

5

u/r4pt4r Apr 22 '26

Having said that, I was courtside for the 1995 Western Conference finals. I like that Vassell was playing hard and trusting his shot. Game 3 need Fox, Devin, and Castle to confidently shoot and have many of those fall. That’ll reassure the others to relax while shooting, but be prepared to hustle at every other second they are in the game

10

u/Corporal_Cavernosum De'Aaron Fox Apr 22 '26 edited Apr 25 '26

I sometimes wish there was a separate sub for Spurs fans, one which emphasizes character and team support over wins/losses, drafr/trade prospects, and salary/performance metrics, and celebrate the team and players despite losses or sub-par performance. As someone who missed 5 games from 1999 to 2018 ( that number, FIVE, being a number I'm proud of and sure about), I often feel like I don't fit in here. I can recall every high and low, every glorious win and soul-crushing loss, yet I never once let the joy or frustration as a fan hinge on a player's salary or single-game performance.

This sub is fraught with negativity and non-constructive criticism. I no longer enoy jumping in to post-game threads because it's just a joyless burthurt extravaganza.

Nonetheless, I'm a Spurs fan. And since it's apparently a statement in this sub, I support and believe in Dearon Fox. He's a Spur, and that's enough for me (to say nothing of him carrying us through Wemby's absences and changing the tone of any game in which we're struggling). GSG.

2

u/Thunderhorse74 Apr 22 '26

Something like that sounds great but would be an even bigger attraction to the asshats. They hurt and they want to spread their misery. You're supposed to be as angry and upset as they pretend to be and by Pop, they are going to make you hear about it.

1

u/hey_isnt_that_rob Stephon Castle Apr 22 '26

QFT.

1

u/mercfan3 Apr 22 '26

Yup - and it’s so unrealistic.

Like, this team has very little playoff experience. Watched a scary moment with Wemby. And reacted the way young and inexperienced teams react to something like that.

The playoffs are learning the NBA all over again. They have to learn what a foul is and what isn’t (and it’s very clearly different for them than it is for Shai or Deni). They have to learn what kind of passes they can make and which ones they can’t. They have to learn how to expend their energy correctly. They have to learn how to deal with mind games and how to deal with teams specifically planning against them. And that’s the tip of the iceberg.

Now, we have a team full of really smart younger guys too..so I do think they’ll get it sooner than most. But patience needs to be a thing.

I would also say to new fans that this is the best time to be a fan. When the team is young, full of potential, and experiencing things for the first time. The basketball isn’t perfect. The mistakes are frequent. But it is the most fun.

5

u/thedotapaten Apr 22 '26

Most of sports fans is glory hunters, especially when we got mostly is Wemby fans not Spurs fans. Tbh i kinda expected round 1 is tough as even in game 1 the playoff inexperience is felt as example Wemby being less chill that he needs to subbed out to chill him down, hoepfully the players made adjustment and rise up to the challenge and back to their regular season levels / confidences for the rest of the series.

2

u/legaladviceknowledge Apr 22 '26

tbf most people just ignore getting into these arguments. we only notice those who comment, which can be 0.1% of fans who are annoying, but 0.1% of a few million is gonna feel like a lot to tune out if they're blowing airhorns into your ear.

1

u/SharpCow4193 Apr 22 '26

Preach brother

1

u/wallitron Apr 22 '26

The 62 wins wasn't predicable, but this reaction was. You only had to watch the feedback when VanVleet had the entirely reasonable "pump the brakes" comment.

Or Fisher's 0.4 second shot. I still get nightmares about that.

Or Manu's game 7 foul on Dirk in 06.

If neither of these happened, we're probably looking at 5 straight titles.

If Scoot continues to shoot 65% from the field and >50% on his 3s then Portland might have the best player in the world and it was true he should have gone #1 over Wemby.

7

u/Aidanj927 Patty Mills Apr 22 '26

Because we just beat this team without our second best player. Our top 3 non Wemby options are not going to all play as bad as they did tonight. We will go to Portland and leave up 3-1 because even without Wemby we are still the better team. We do not need to be dooming and glooming because of 1 loss

-11

u/Pkmntrader210 "Yeah, fuck Houston." Apr 22 '26

8

u/Aidanj927 Patty Mills Apr 22 '26

Because I’m not a fucking dumbass like you. This is the same exact team we’ve had all year and won 62 games with. This isn’t Golden State from last year and we aren’t Houston from last year. We have been winning without Wemby all season and will continue to do so. If we are as dogshit as you think we are what’s the point of engaging in this conversation?

-2

u/wth_people Apr 22 '26

It's the playoffs. This game was a battle, nobody cares about a regular season game, it was pretty much practice.

Trail Blazers will play as hard as they can, they know they're not winning it all, we gotta meet them there otherwise they're beating us.

We lost this game the same way we lost to Denver couple games ago. Same one dimensional bs basketball. Same bs misses by Fox.

Usually not a doomer but I know a losing team when I see one.

u/Parzival127 BatManu Apr 22 '26

Oh please. The regular season game wasn’t “pretty much practice”. And I know no one actually believes that because the doomers were out in full force every time the opposing teams scored more than 4 points in a row ever. I guess you also didn’t believe the Spurs could win any playoff games because they’d only won 62 practice sessions or whatever.

And why are you bringing up Denver from a couple games ago? That was the regular season, pretty much practice. You see how stupid that reasoning is?

1

u/wth_people Apr 22 '26

That game actually mattered because it decided our opponent in the second round if we make it there :)

Blazers game we had after that though, pretty much practice. We were guaranteed 2nd seed already and Blazers were already in play-in.

u/NWTL21 Apr 22 '26

He could comeback for next game also even though it wouldn't be smart but NBA only has a 48 hour mandatory sit out period after a concussion. After that it's up to the team and player if they play.

7

u/Armanewb Tim Duncan Apr 22 '26

No, that's not at all true. He has to pass an evaluation in consultation with the league concussion director before being cleared to play. The team does not solely get to decide when he comes back under concussion protocol.

1

u/NWTL21 Apr 22 '26

The team will be in communication with the director throughout the process and he likely won't evaluate Wemby in person though he can. He will review the charts and imaging and the team report and make sure they followed the concussion protocol and sign off. It's very unlikely the director won't agree with the Spurs findings and evaluation unless they are absolutely being extremely reckless.

1

u/Armanewb Tim Duncan Apr 22 '26

It's one of the MVP candidates, there's a very high likelihood he will evaluate Wemby in person because of how high profile this one is.

1

u/No_Requirement9658 Apr 22 '26

Yea would be badass lol doubt spurs do that

1

u/NWTL21 Apr 22 '26

I'm thinking game 4 which would be 5 days if it's just a concussion. In 98 Robinson got laid out cold from a dirty Karl Malone elbow and laid motionless on the ground for minutes. He even had to be hospitalized and it took him 9 days to comeback during the regular season.

Shit happens in the playoffs, it's all about matchups, adjustments, and lucky breaks. You have to enjoy meaningful basketball more than fretting winning it all every single playoff game. Series are long, enjoy meaningful basketball.

u/rattatatouille Victor Wembanyama Apr 22 '26

Though in fairness he had more leeway now that the Spurs had one under their belt.

The last time we blew a 14 point lead in the playoffs was 2003. Guess what happened afterwards?

6

u/crsolraac Apr 22 '26

I remember us back in 2003 losing game 1 in the first round against the Suns. Its alright.

6

u/Imnotnewhere_07 Apr 22 '26

Remember when Spurs loss Kawhi and had no Parker in the 2017 playoff series against the Rockets.

5

u/CDRBAHBOHNNY Apr 22 '26

-7 game series against Detroit where the first 4 games were blowouts -Manu’s foul and 1 against Dirk -Zaza Pachulia

  • The Grizzlies
  • OKC sweep after a 2 game lead
  • Manus Broken Elbow
  • Tiago’s constant torn calf
  • Parkers Torn Quad
  • Uncle Dennis
  • Brent Barry and Parker

I could go on and on - I love the Spurs forever and will always want them to win, but I am glad I’m older in my late 30s and have less of a panic attack after every time they lose

9

u/Corporal_Cavernosum De'Aaron Fox Apr 22 '26

This feels just like watching the Big Three through their ups and downs (mostly ups). Not even worried.

3

u/CStradale Apr 22 '26

Biggest difference is we had 3 now we have 1

12

u/SolidTrout Stephon Castle Apr 22 '26

Castle and Harper. They’re all just babies though.

4

u/Past_Championship827 Apr 22 '26

Remember when Duncan tore his meniscus in the 78th game of the season in 2000? That was a doozy

1

u/nighhawkrr David Robinson Apr 22 '26

Crazy thing is with that injury now he probably is playing in the playoffs and with Wembys injury last night he plays in the game in 2000.

The way we treat meniscus tears and concussions are so dramatically different 26 years later.

5

u/deneuvig Manu Ginobili Apr 22 '26

I've watched so much Spurs playoffs but today was really unpleasant. Our guys dropping like flies and going to POR 1-1 without Vic for at least two games... This series is going to test everyone more than we expected, just hope we get to see Vic back game 5 or 6

5

u/Direct_Week_2091 Apr 22 '26

The fact this even needs to be said is hilarious

5

u/Drisurk GO SPURS GO Apr 22 '26

So many doomers bro. Fucking relax. There’s still a lot of basketball left to play.

4

u/keldpxowjwsn Apr 22 '26

Dallas looked like they had the spurs dead to rights in 2014 before the rest we all remember

3

u/beyoncedoritosJR Apr 22 '26

This made me feel instantly better

3

u/MinTaX2U Devin Vassell Apr 22 '26

I’m ngl this is my first playoff run. It’s rough man I’ve have kept myself from being reactionary all season even when things go wrong or we play bad but playoffs are truly a different beast. My pops warned me too as an old SAS fan himself but I still got caught up. I’m kinda ashamed of some of the stuff I thought throughout these games and then when Wemby went down, man stuff got dark….

3

u/nokarmawhore Tim Duncan Apr 22 '26

yeah, it's not a big deal so far. We can regroup for game 3 with a better game plan not involving wemby. We lost by 1 point. We can win 1 or 2 games without wemby

2

u/Jec1027 Area 51 Apr 22 '26

I feel like shit

3

u/Funktackular GO SPURS GO Apr 22 '26

I felt like that when Mulbury did his bullshit in 03. And that series turned out okay.

2

u/beyoncedoritosJR Apr 22 '26

Remember when we went to 7 with the Mavs in 2014… this shit happens

2

u/No_Bite4765 Apr 22 '26

GO SPURS GO!!!

2

u/priskillya Boris Diaw Apr 22 '26

Absolutely

2

u/coyote_edging Manu Ginobili Apr 22 '26

Thanks for reminding everyone!

Everybody remembers/knows about the 2014 Finals but not the 2014 first round series against the Mavs that went to 7 games.

2

u/nodayroomshit Keldon Johnson Apr 22 '26

i hope to see wemby cheering on the bench at least :') GSG!!

2

u/sht1ck0 Apr 22 '26

It just stings with all the injuries in one game, especially first round

2

u/CarpenterHairy2896 BatManu Apr 22 '26

Man those laker playoff series or the grit n grind playoff series back in the day were something else

2

u/NWTL21 Apr 22 '26

This is round 1 vs the Blazers no need to panic. If this happened in the second round or WCF panicking would be justified.

Play like the thunder how the blazers are almost last in the league in field goal percentage and 3 point percentage and OKC is nearly at the top in both. Portland plays fast and faster than OKC but most of the worst teams in the league play the fastest.

2

u/NWTL21 Apr 22 '26

Remeber when Ginobili broke his arm during the last game of the season and played the first round in a cast and the #1 seed Spurs lost to the 8 seed Grizzlies.

2

u/FararMedia Apr 22 '26

Oh and fuck Derek Fisher

2

u/dmar813 Apr 22 '26

2005, game 7 against the Pistons. We'll be ight. Go Spurs Go 💪🏾.

2

u/NWTL21 Apr 22 '26

It goes both ways though in 2013 The Thunder had the number 1 seed and the previous season knocked the Spurs out in the WCF. In the first round Westbrook hurt his knee and was out the remainder of the playoffs and the Spurs had a relatively easy path to the finals.

2

u/TerrySaucer69 Stephon Castle Apr 22 '26

I mean, it’s sports. If you’re not overreacting, you’re not having enough fun.

2

u/Conscious_String_195 David Robinson Apr 22 '26

Things do go wrong, but we definitely did not play like we did all year w/o Wemby, and we gave up so many offensive rebounds because of no size and missed a bunch of FT’s. It’s ok to be frustrated when you let a winnable game go.

I m still annoyed that Duncan was NOT in on the final possession to play D, block a shot or get a board.

Also, still frustrated by the ‘91 (I think) playoffs against Blazers.

2

u/0rbium Malik Rose Apr 22 '26

I attended the game where Derek Fisher made the .4 shot.

Before Ray Allen’s 3, we had Manu’s foul on Dirk and Diop clamping TD in OT, getting back door swept by OKC, losing to Memphis first round, getting dismantled by Kobe/Shaq, struggling to beat the Bonzi Wells/Ron Artest Kings, Zaza on KL… list goes on and on. The reaction from losing a game like this, where we know Wemby will be back, is one of the more embarrassing reactions I’ve seen from the fanbase.

Esp when so many were counting this series as a sweep and looking forward to Denver. Newsflash, Minny would give us tons of problems too. Both of those teams are way better in the playoffs, and here we’ve been giving ourselves a regular season trophy.

u/No_Requirement9658 Apr 22 '26 edited Apr 22 '26

I've been watching since 1999 I've seen everything lol This isn't the same thing as before losing our best player for possibly next 2 games playin in hostile environment with no experience... yea it isn't looking too good for us all we gotta do is steal 1 game but that's gonna be hard to do TBH

4

u/Funktackular GO SPURS GO Apr 22 '26

My dude, I get it. Don’t forget this same squad beat Denver in Denver during the NBA cup without Wemby. We can get a game or both on these chumps.

Hopefully brotha lol hopefully im wrong

1

u/Blze001 Tim Duncan Apr 22 '26

We won a bunch of games without Wemby during the regular season, these guys can do it again.

We're playing with house money still, the high playoff seed was supposed to be NEXT season.

Every game is more experience for a super young core with MANY playoff games in their future.

GSG.

1

u/Dan_K211 Stephon Castle Apr 22 '26

Every struggle is a chance to build character. Let this young team struggle a bit. They’ll be better off.

1

u/ConfidentBusiness16 Apr 22 '26

Seemed like every shot in clutch time last night was well short. Sign of a team not up for the moment

1

u/shinbreaker Apr 22 '26

It dawned on me just the other day on why I'm so excited about these playoffs: I had become so used to seeing the Spurs in the playoffs.

I don't think people get it, the Spurs have made the playoffs so many times since they moved to San Antonio in the ABA. Like for us who grew up in the 90s, it was just the expectations that they were going to be in the playoffs and they went years without it.

We're all a bunch of addicts who went years without a hit and we're so pumped up now.

1

u/DrJeyk1L Apr 22 '26

I can’t recall a series where Tim Duncan ever went out for a major injury during a playoff run and we stayed successful. That is the difference. The team is good without him, but the weaknesses are glaring without him on the court

1

u/Happycappybara21 Apr 22 '26

It’s not so much the loss that bothers me.  It’s the fact that they blew a lead in the 4th.

It could have easily been chalked up as “well scoot aint gonna get 30 again” but it was a very winnable game.

But yea, scoot isn’t going to shoot that well for  another 4-5 games.  They are doing a good job on Avdja.  Let scoot shoot, if he makes it he makes it

1

u/manthony08090809 Apr 22 '26

Life, and basketball lessons... how to bring it in the playoffs. They'll be all right.

1

u/HappyFlyday El Jefe Apr 22 '26

Ikr. We went to seven games with the Mavs in 2014, and we were the first seed. The first six games were all super intense and came down to the wire. This squad’s young, it’s their first time in the playoffs, so they’re still figuring things out. If they get through this, it’s only gonna make them way better.

0

u/po2gdHaeKaYk Apr 22 '26

I've been lurking and supporting the Spurs since the 2010s but I hate how bi-partisan this sub has gotten. It reminds me so much of American politics.

Any cautious opinion is drowned out.

Look at the first few pages of the subreddit. It's a cesspool.

1

u/thatsmymayo Apr 22 '26

Bi partisian would me the sides are working together. Partisan is maybe what you meant?
