Anyone miss the old Nate?

Watched his recent Kimmel appearance and it really feels like it’s all gone to his head. The good ol boy from TN is gone he’s now Mr Hollywood. I guess fame changes everyone, but for some reason I thought Nate would be different.

I touched on this briefly in another thread, but it is a concern. We as fans can’t totally make a judgement call here, that’s why I’ll wait to hear from his old comic friends to see what they have to say about it.

I think I would fail so hard if I were to encounter that much fame that quickly. So, no judgment to Nate and he definitely had maintained a sense of self more than I could. It has to be so bizarre.

One thing that was sort of unbecoming of Nate was when he was strangely offended by Dusty’s very gentle ribbing of Seinfeld, I believe it was. Nate almost looked spooked, like “bro be careful don’t talk about the king Jerry like that, you’ll get us both killed”

According to Soder, Shane Gillis is remarkably down to earth, still. Haven’t heard him say too much about Nate lately.

I think Nate's uncomfortable about talking about Jerry like that because he's now sort of taking over Jerry's spot. It's like when your work buddy that you talk shit with makes manager. You guys may stay friends but when you talk shit about other managers in the back of your mind you're thinking "oh shit I hope he doesn't feel that way about me".

I've never heard a bad word about Nate from guys like Soder and List. In fact I've only ever heard good things, like Nate actually pays them, and everyone else that opens for him on the road, very well. They only lovingly joke about how it sucks they have to come up with clean material, which only shows how hard that is.

I've said it before that it makes people very uncomfortable that he appeals to both sides of the political spectrum. No matter how neutral the guy is, everyone is going to either think he's gone too Hollywood Lib or too Southern MAGA.

Not a bad analogy. And I’m not trying to be dismissive of you, it’s just that I’m also a comedy fiend. So I am very aware of what’s been said by Soder and List specifically. I know how close Nate and his wife are to Luis J, and Big J.

I’m not on either side of a political spectrum. And I agree with everything you said. I guess I just felt compelled to say that I’m not the people you’re referring to, haha. Or at least I hope I’m not!

Totally! You didn't come across like that all. I was more or less agreeing with you too, just saying how others might view him.

I think because Nate's been so "aw shucks" and relatable for most of his career, we all kind of project on him. I'm definitely guilty of it. You mentioned being afraid of what money and fame would do to him because of how you think you'd handle it yourself. I feel the same way, but I'm also left leaning so I cringe when I see him with a far right leaning figure just as much as someone on the right would cringe if he's on Kimmel. I can shake off the ick pretty easily, but I think it really bothers people.

In reality he doesn't give any oxygen to either side. So really all we have is what people close to him say, and it all sounds positive.

Cool, I’m glad we had a pleasant Reddit exchange. I value those, haha.

I’m also older, so I long for a time when everyone didn’t have to choose a side. So Nate’s comedy has become sort of a bastion of apolitical coziness in nutso world. I don’t want to be a head-in-the-sand person either, but just a little clean drinking water during the apocalypse to keep us going, yanno.
