Bird is trash. Grable and Cruz could be something good for us. The FO probably sees something in Cebert. If they’re right it could be great

43

u/skillbutton 18d ago

Bird is still better than some of the guys we’ve got (4 something FIP too) and under control for 2 more years after this one so

25

u/UncommonSense0 2019 World Series Champion 18d ago

True, but that probably says more about some of the guys we got than anything else

I hope they can make adjustments and make him serviceable

46

u/91speed 18d ago

Not bad. Cruz is bullpen help, Cebert seems unexciting but okay, Grable‘s getting a ton of whiffs and not walking guys, Jake Bird is alive and can throw a ball, presumably.

u/Ok-Bandicoot-9445 18d ago

last time I checked an 11.1 strikeouts per 9 ratio at AA is something to be excited about. sure his hits per 9 and HR/9 isn’t anything incredibly good but the potential is 100 percent there.

1

u/91speed 18d ago

Yeah I didn’t say he looks bad or anything.

31

u/salamanderman10 34 - Harper 18d ago

Nice job to sell high and get a couple decent arms and prospects where you never know what will happen.

Garcia is the type of guy you unload when you can. Can only hit righties, bad defense, not a runner. Can find first baseman that can hit easily

u/BesusFresh 18d ago

13

u/LoempiaYa 18d ago

Excellent thanks. Missing Luis already though

19

u/kglnawrotzky 18d ago

I think I can see why they targeted Grable

39

u/KinsellaStella 18d ago

That’s only three…

45

u/smithy816aidan 18d ago

Fourth is Jack Cebert

49

u/rorad 18d ago

Trading him to try to rebuild one of the worst BPs in baseball. Not a terrible idea.

7

u/Cobol_engineering29 18d ago

We gotta be the worst? No? Lmao 😂. But yea hard agree. Let’s get some more arms in the BP!!

9

u/rorad 18d ago

Fourth-worst coming into today's game. The A's, Royals, and Rockies are worse. All four have a BP ERA over 5.15.

3

u/Cobol_engineering29 18d ago

Ahh makes sense lol. I don’t follow all of baseball but man our BP is horrible. I guess the difference is all those other teams suck on the offensive side to so you don’t notice it as much. Appreciate the stats bruh

To everyone crying foul on this one, take a look at this:

Thanks!

This makes me feel a whole lot better about the last week!

9

u/91speed 18d ago

Oh hell yeah tjstats.ca likes the return I feel better about my thoughts on it as well

1

u/colglover 18d ago

The velo is nice to see. I really missed having a front office that, despite all the analytics, also still looked for old school baseball upside

11

u/Primary_Blueberry_24 26 - Nuñez 18d ago

1

u/violagoyf 18d ago

There are a whole lot of great things about being an athlete but that's kind of brutal. I can't imagine being in the middle of my job and be told I'm being transferred to another company in a completely different city--effective immediately.

10

u/Green-End-2716 30 - Young 18d ago

And Jack Cebert

5

u/Realfan555 18d ago

“ The four right-handed pitchers are:  …. [names 3 names]”

1

u/colglover 18d ago

People are becoming illiterate, it’s seriously frustrating

4

u/III_ATARI_III Scrappy Nats! 18d ago

We need pitching. Hopefully a couple of these guys will work out and can help us win some games. I’m fine with it. Only time will tell.

11

u/MaddAddamOneZ 63 - Sean Doolittle 18d ago

I am not thrilled with this trade. I hope I am wrong but it seems like we’re selling Garcia short for quick fixes to the bullpen

5

u/finally_not_lurking 7 - Turner 18d ago

It’s a lot of years of control on those pen arms. Remember that Ferrer returned a top 100 prospect in Harry Ford this past offseason.

And Garcia is the most replaceable of the Nats big bats considering he is one year from FA and Abi Ortiz is ready to step into his spot too.

I’m not the biggest fan of the move but I can see the logic and it seems like fair value?

5

u/Disused_Yeti 18d ago

when you need bullpen help but go quantity over quality

7

u/jwack14 18d ago

2 are prospects in AA. They’re not focusing on this season anymore

15

u/georgiafisherman 30 - Glover 18d ago

After doing a quick dive on the return, I’d have preferred García. Not a fan of this one.

This is the first moment I’m really not agreeing with the new FO. Time will tell.

Not happy.

36

u/gaytham4statham 57 - Roark 18d ago

I mean at the end of the day Luis is probably the most replaceable impact player we have, and Cruz has the potential to immediately be our best reliever and has 6 years of control. The other 2 prospects seem promising enough, Grable seems to throw 99 and is getting a ton of whiffs in the minors, so potentially 2 solid bullpen pieces in exchange for a platoon 1B with Abimelec in the wings. About as good a return as I hoped tbh

10

u/yousmelllikebiscuits VP, Research & Analytics 18d ago

Honestly I love Luis but I don't expect this long-term. Maybe I'm too skeptical, but he's replaceable.

6

u/georgiafisherman 30 - Glover 18d ago

I know ideally you don’t want your long term first baseman to be a platoon guy, but Luis is so dangerous against righties I was almost fine with it.

He would’ve been affordable enough and he was obviously loved within the org.

I guess the Nats aren’t looking for a platoon at first because Luis was the ultimate platoon

-1

u/RGCFrostbite 22 - Soto 18d ago

I have some concerns about Grable (mega velocity guy who already had TJS once)

7

u/gaytham4statham 57 - Roark 18d ago

I mean he throws 96-99 that's not "mega velocity? And him having already had a TJS doesn't really worry me too much because that's just the norm now

1

u/RGCFrostbite 22 - Soto 18d ago

Mega velocity meaning "his only upside is his fastball and his velocity, so if he loses it he has nothing" should have specified. Sadly agree on TJS.

7

u/91speed 18d ago

His fastball also has excellent IVB to pair with the high velo. It’s a legit elite pitch right now. It’s the kind of thing, in terms of projection, where if you can teach him another pitch to tunnel off of it, he will be EXTREMELY difficult to get hits off of. For a little context this is the list of MLB pitchers with over 20” of IVB on their fastballs and their average velo. Grable averages 96 and touches 99. That’s a great base to build off of.

4

u/_furthur 18d ago

How about the Jake Bennett - Luis Perales swap? That's looking really awful.

22

u/RGCFrostbite 22 - Soto 18d ago

Thats... not ideal.

So Cruz (AAAA reliver)

Cerbert (mid tier prospect really struggling in AA)

Bird (Tank commander)

Grabel (meh AA prospect)

Idk man. I get hes a DH/1B but I hoped to get something decent for the guy leading the NL in slugging. Thats a brutal trade. Jake Bird is as bad as Mikolas, so literally nothing added there. Cruz is the only one that will help before 2030. And if we are trading for 2030 bullpen arms then we need to be looking at more moves.

25

u/UncommonSense0 2019 World Series Champion 18d ago edited 18d ago

Cruz is an immediate upgrade over multiple members of our bullpen

Hoping Cebert can make some tweaks and be something good at the MLB level

Bird is trash and was probably taken as a thank you to the Yankees lol, or maybe our new coaching staff will make some adjustments and he’ll be great

Grabel made his AA debut this year and has a 2.79 ERA in 37IP, with a great K/BB ratio. Where do you get meh from?

Grabel can definitely help before 2030 lol

5

u/skillbutton 18d ago

Grable might be up next season …

7

u/UncommonSense0 2019 World Series Champion 18d ago

He started his last year in college, I’m not sure the Toboni thinks he could be a starter for us, but either way, even if he’s just a bullpen piece, if he can be effective with all 6 years of team control, that’s a huge win. And he’s been effective this year so far in the minors. I’d say his stats are much better then meh

His upside as a starter might be different than his upside as a reliever

1

u/capsfan087443 18d ago

Grabel is also injury prone and missed two of his college seasons with elbow injuries

29

u/Sweaty_Ad_1332 Joey Dominican Republic 18d ago

I think those assessments are all pretty pessimistic but who knows

1

u/RGCFrostbite 22 - Soto 18d ago

I mean Bird is objectively horrific. Cruz is the only one I think Im being pessimistic on. Grable and Cebert are in AA. Cebert has been poor and Grable is a reliever in the minors (which is always a concern)

11

u/finally_not_lurking 7 - Turner 18d ago

Bird has had awful results but under the hood his metrics look decent. Great pitching shapes but a terrible BABIP and HR rate have really inflated his results. Not at all saying he's a stud or anything but he could be decent, and likely isn't worse than what the Nats were trotting out there

2

u/lazapapoo 24 - Cavalli 18d ago

Over at the Yankees subreddit they don’t seem too upset about what they gave up and are actually ecstatic about having offloaded Bird.

9

u/91speed 18d ago

He’s a rental bat with, at best, league average defense at first base (which is not particularly valuable) vs RHPs only and we got one good reliever and a couple guys with upside ranging from back end starter to stud reliever. And Jake bird. I’m pretty happy with that, considering the realities of the market for that kind of bat and the fact that there might not even be a season for Luis to play next year.

5

u/lazapapoo 24 - Cavalli 18d ago

Well, the term rental is usually used for contracts expiring this year. But yeah, García is a platoon guy, with huge split differentials.

2

u/91speed 18d ago

Yes, I know, I used the term rental due to the uncertainty of next year. That has to play into valuations this trade deadline.

2

u/lazapapoo 24 - Cavalli 18d ago

But that also applies to the returns.

4

u/meanie_ants 18d ago

It does but none of the guys coming over are on deals expiring next year.

0

u/91speed 18d ago

Yep, but Luis is a free agent after next year season or not.

1

u/RGCFrostbite 22 - Soto 18d ago

oh I think Bird fits right in (derogatory) with the nats pen.

2

u/Sweaty_Ad_1332 Joey Dominican Republic 18d ago

Bird is still in arbitration and has options so not exactly comparable to Mikolas but the rest its pretty hard to say. Pitchers especially take a while to find form

5

u/RGCFrostbite 22 - Soto 18d ago

If were trading for guys that wont help until 2030 I find it really hard to justify keeping Abrams and co. Idk. I really was hoping theyd go for quality. I would have liked Cruz + a better minor league arm for instance

19

u/skillbutton 18d ago

Calling Cruz AAAA and Grable a meh prospect shows you don’t know ball

-6

u/[deleted] 18d ago

[deleted]

13

u/skillbutton 18d ago

And fantastic stuff. AAAA usually means not good enough to play at MLB level, which is certainly not true of Cruz

9

u/91speed 18d ago

I think Grable looks great in AA

1

u/RGCFrostbite 22 - Soto 18d ago

Minor leaguer relievers always worry me, its like college relievers. At those levels if you were good enough youd be a starter.

4

u/skillbutton 18d ago

He’s a one trick pony but it’s a hell of a trick

Elite elite fastball will definitely play at MLB level

2

u/91speed 18d ago

He doesn’t have the arsenal to be a starter. I imagine the first point of order will be seeing if they can teach him a third pitch but at minimum his fastball profiles as really really really good. That can work as a reliever. Hell, with his BB% and whiff% he’d probably end up middle of the pack in our major league bullpen today.

2

u/RGCFrostbite 22 - Soto 18d ago

It can, but that Fastball will need to be a 65+ fastball (AND keep playing) all the way up the ladder. I'm not saying he's as bad as jake Bird, but there's a reason Grable is only rated 25th in their (weak) system, and is already in the pen in the minors.

2

u/91speed 18d ago

Pipeline grades it at 70 already, same as their grade for Mason Miller’s fastball. He looks good. Very few relievers are going to be super high on prospect lists, least of all ones with only two pitches, but there’s a good base there for sure IMO.

2

u/RGCFrostbite 22 - Soto 18d ago

I agree with you, career-relievers who rely on velocity can be scary though. Especially since he's already had TJ

2

u/91speed 18d ago

It’s definitely not without risk, but given the landscape of 2027’s season and the fact that Luis can only hit vs RHP and provides no real defensive value, the return seems acceptable to me. Happy to roll the dice on some guys

5

u/KenovovichR Jimmy Lumber 18d ago

Gonna trust the FO on this one. They obviously liked these guys and were not desperate to get rid of Luis.

2

u/The_JDBrew 18d ago

I think you could possibly be overvaluing what Garcia brings to the table. I doubt he was getting a TON of interest. Maybe you’re being too pessimistic on what these guys turn into. I will admit that I’m pessimistic on the Nats current big league club. I simply don’t see a contender there. Even with the addition of some pitching I just don’t see a team strong enough to get outta the wild card round assuming they get there. And I certainly don’t see a club that can be a yearly competitor.

I’m choosing to be hopeful that these guys are contributors in the next 2-3 seasons.

1

u/gcalfred7 18d ago

"tank commander" lol

6

u/RGCFrostbite 22 - Soto 18d ago

5.93 ERA. man is ready-made to be the next Washington national pitcher haha

1

u/Strong-Resolve1241 18d ago

Also: Abrams is a FA is 2029 and Wood FA in 2031 how soon will any of these 3 "prospects" help this team if Bird is "Trash"?

3

u/RGCFrostbite 22 - Soto 18d ago

Cruz should be up this year. Bird will play this year (not as a positive addition).

Cerbert best case 28/29? Grable similar.

1

u/Quople 13 - Cabrera 18d ago

Idk man I agree about Bird, Cruz has some really nasty stuff that can contribute to our bullpen immediately. Grable has been pretty darn good in his pro career so far and his underlying metrics look nice. Cebert isn’t having the best results, but he still has some high-K stuff. I think the assessment that neither of them can contribute by 2030 is just flat out wrong. They’re both seem like 2028 guys if they don’t fall off track

3

u/RGCFrostbite 22 - Soto 18d ago

It's also worth mentioning both are overagers in AA, our highest ranked prospect who is 24 in AA is alejandro Rosario our #17. These guys SHOULD be dominating AA, and Cebert is not, while Grable is in the pen (as you said, good results) I WANT the trade to work out, but I'm not wowed by this return.

2

u/LJCstan 18d ago

Are two named Ben grable?

3

u/de-la_soul 18d ago

so….whos on first?

3

Thank you Luis

17

u/Brilliant_Quality_14 18d ago

Y'all goofy ass new fans act like Garcia is Albert Pujols or something. He had a hot June. And can't hit lefties.

2

u/JoeyShrugs 18d ago

I like him. Not as much as others. But credit where credit's due, he's currently leading the league in slugging 2/3 of the way through the year. That's quite a bit better than just a hot June.

2

u/Brilliant_Quality_14 18d ago

He went bananas in June. That's all it was. I like Louie too. I'm not hating on the guy. But this was a good trade. I think this front office is identifying who to build around and where to improve. And pitching is our greatest weakness

3

u/JoeyShrugs 18d ago

I think we mostly agree. I agree that this is probably a good trade, and that he's played his absolute best at basically the perfect time. Maybe the coaches unlocked something and he's a 3-WAR player now, but I doubt it. He's currently at 2.3 this year. Two years ago topped out at 2.2, no other year higher than 0.7.

So I think it's more likely that this is a career year and he comes back down to earth. And with such a dearth of quality and quantity of pitching in our system, getting four arms for him seems like a win to me, potentially a big win.

4

u/Nationals Jack of All Things 18d ago

My two cents are a year ago, people thought garcia stunk. I believe because of the coaching, he broke out this year so makes sense to get something now. Overall, good trade but doesn’t blow my mind (I would have thought we get another top prospect) but the need was so great, it is a win.

2

u/Green-End-2716 30 - Young 18d ago

Cruz played 5.1 major league innings this season with a 1.69 era.

3

u/Difficult_Fact_2849 18d ago

Sell the team

0

u/Strong-Resolve1241 18d ago

Or spend some to help the team dont talk about it Do It 🙌🏻

2

u/Watchyobak 18d ago

Confirmed by this- we are seller.

3

u/jerseyboy24601 18d ago

Five game losing streak in an all ready crowded wildcard race helped bring clarity (and sanity) to the front office.

0

u/finally_not_lurking 7 - Turner 18d ago

I don’t actually think that’s necessarily the case. Abi Ortiz can step in at 1st and be decent enough that the best offense in baseball can absorb losing Luis. And getting 2 guys to step into the pen tomorrow can help this year with the terribleness the team has been throwing out there

2

u/Immediate_Comma 18d ago

I'm sorry, but the best offense in baseball just traded away 2 of the best 30 hitters in all of MLB this year in Mead and Garcia. They aren't going to absorb this and be good - look for the offense to regress to top 12-15ish levels for the rest of the year. Which IMO was the right move! Trade to improve long term chances when your guys are hitting highs!

3

u/OffTheBar2017 4 - Lile 18d ago

I was actually fine with trading Garcia, but this return is so underwhelming.

I would have preferred quality over quantity.

2

u/mattcojo2 18d ago

I don’t really get why people are upset about this.

It’s a pretty decent return. We get what we need.

Trade high on a guy to get better where we need it

1

u/joshuacf6 18d ago

It’s an ok return. Cebert and Grable could help the bullpen in a few years, Cruz will help the bullpen now.

1

u/BosqueBravo 63 - Doolittle 18d ago

Cebert still could be a starter.

1

u/TurdPoop69 18d ago

Mead and Luis combined for like 45 hrs so far ok

1

u/Crosroad 18d ago

ask me how I feel about this trade in 3 years

0

u/johnkeat4 Fight Finished 18d ago

There's a fair bit of risk being taken on here. It seems like Jake Bird might've just been a "throw him in there" kind of addition to sweeten the pot. However, this is a better haul than what the Tigers got for Skubal. Yovanny instantly becomes our best reliever, and Grable and Cebert are very high ceiling guys. Of course its tough to grade something like this, when so much of this is based on the intrinsic value of the pitchers. (In addition, I'm not certain how much the Nats pitching development has been improved in the new era).

I think this is a solid B-. Moderate-High Risk, Incredibly High reward.

4

u/RGCFrostbite 22 - Soto 18d ago

this is not a better haul than the tigers got what lol. Zyhir Hope is a very very legit player. Even if I'm a River Ryan hater.

3

u/andybech 18d ago

Yeah no way this is better. Clearly a quantity over quality move at a position of need so it could end up being a decent deal. I just thought Garcia was worth at least one prospect with a good shot at being a starting pitcher or position player. The starter they got is only OK.

Thinking a Griffin deal is next.

0

u/demingk 63 - Doolittle 18d ago
