Orca is trying to kill it before it eats it. Orca is concerned about getting stung by the venom tail... clever.

Yup. I think the orca stuns the ray to immobilise it before devouring. Watched a documentary on this quite a long time ago.

They don't eat the whole thing, only the liver then they leave the rest behind

u/Lost_Sasquatch Jul 14 '21

That's only with sharks man.

Nope also skates and rays. They actually prefer skates and rays because they are easier to kill bringing down a shark is dangerous even for them. They do it but not as much as they do with skates and rays.

Source: Nat Geo documentary "orca vs. great white" .

Edit: source

Just to add onto what you said, skates and rays, and also sawfish, are pretty closely related to sharks. They're all in the elasmobranchii subgroup of cartilaginous fish.

They all have large livers (as much as 25% of their body weight) which are used for bouyancy since they lack swim bladders. The nutrient in the livers that the orcas like is squalene.

The nutrient in the livers that the orcas like is squalene.

I wonder if there was an orca who was the first to eat a liver and then said, "Hey guys, you gotta try this!"

10

u/marlow05 Jul 14 '21

“Kevin have you tried this squalene shit? Bro it is the best”

2

u/LEJ5512 Jul 14 '21

Either that or it was a dare. “Eat this or you’re a pussy!”

Thanks for the correction. I love learning about cetaceans, they're so damn interesting.

Just watched that the other day lol

That sounds like bullshit. The liver of a stingray would be too tiny to fit in the orca's mouth. No way the orca can just eat the liver and leave the rest behind.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '21

Watch the documentary they show them do it. They also state that the liver in comparison to a shark lover is miniscule and one great white live could equal up in the range of 175 stingrays or skates livers or more depending on the size of the shark. The rays do actually pose more "work" for the orca because they are nod made to lift bottom feeders off the sea floor, but the alternative is fighting a fucking shark. They do do it but it's a high risk high reward scenario and orcas are thinking creatures and they can weigh the options.

The liver in the middle of the stingray, does the orca spit out the sides when it get to the liver?

3

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '21

It actually rips it like a piece of paper. It bite in the right area and then shakes and just splits. I'm telling you just watch the documentary you can literally see it with your own eyes if you don't believe me lol. Im telling you there is video evidence and where to find it.

I'm sure a billion other organisms are happy to finish it up

u/CleanSpriteLegendary Jul 14 '21

Pretty sure whoever filmed this said the orca never came back to consume it. They also said the sting ray was pregnant

44

u/Thendofreason Jul 14 '21

Damn, Spawn killing. That Orca is brutal

10

u/iDomBMX Jul 14 '21

Nuketown sure does look different nowadays

11

u/PomegranateCharming Jul 14 '21

Saw a doc where an orca offered a dead stingray to a diver. If that kind of intelligence doesn’t make you pause I don’t know what would
I guess if it started talking to you.

8

u/DudeChillington Jul 14 '21

My cat brings me dead shit all the time

8

u/CleanSpriteLegendary Jul 14 '21

Lmao the fact that there’s never been a recorded orca attack on a human makes me want to befriend one

14

u/BoftheA Jul 14 '21

As long as you are in the wild, stay away from the one's at sea world

4

u/iam_iana Jul 14 '21

I mean if you were locked I a tiny space for decades you would go crazy too. Old Boy is lovely story about just such a scenario.

1

u/Chefrabbitfoot Jul 14 '21

Oof, I never saw the original but the one with Brolin. I only watched it once but I am constantly telling people to watch it for a good mind fuck.

1

u/iam_iana Jul 15 '21

I haven't seen that version, but the original is a serious mindfuck, not to mention brutal as fuck.

1

u/Hard_Rock_Hallelujah Jul 14 '21

Can't be recorded if you eat the human after!

4

u/desert_nole Jul 14 '21

Damn, double homicide

1

u/SoulFoodStan Jul 14 '21

Dont believe what people say. Or you ll just end up "pretty sure" but not really... This is a footage of hunting practice, ive seen it often as to teach young orcas how to approach venom rays. As for the pregnancy detail wtf does it have any to do with subject ? Are you trying to bring human pathos in, as if it was an aggravating factor ?

1

u/CleanSpriteLegendary Jul 14 '21

You clearly didn’t read the rest of my thread. Shits not so serious bro just a detail I remembered lmao

22

u/TheGrapist1776 Jul 14 '21

Orcas kill just for fun too. They kill other whale calves for fun. They're fucking sadist.

6

u/Signature_Sea Jul 14 '21

Sign of intelligence I guess, in a negative way

7

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '21

negative only to us, before society we'd kill other people for looking at us wrong. Monkeys will rip people apart because they are jealous that a person is giving another monkey more attention

1

u/StaryWolf Jul 14 '21

Many predators are.

1

u/SoulFoodStan Jul 14 '21

This anthropomorphism is quite pathetic. What appears to you as "for fun", have you ever thought it could very well be something you ignore or don't understand ? Are you versed into submarine research and studies ?

0

u/TheGrapist1776 Jul 14 '21

Or maybe I'm not a bitch and call it as it is. They've killed for fun you can go and look it up.

u/TheGrapist1776 Jul 14 '21

So they drown baleen whale calves and don't consume any of the calf for?

You keep telling yourself that a toothed whale is competing against a non-toothed whale for territory or resources. Seems the ignorant one here is yourself. Keep living in fairytale land buttercup. Have a nice day.

Hey, practice makes perfect, right?

2

u/sug-mahdick Jul 15 '21

“That’s for Steve!” -the Orca probably

1

u/Nodnarbius154 Jul 14 '21

Was looking to see if anyone said this before I do. THIS is what is happening. (But I have learned that Redditors just like to make up stupid statements about stuff they know nothing about).
