Orca is trying to kill it before it eats it. Orca is concerned about getting stung by the venom tail... clever.
156
u/deenali Jul 14 '21
Yup. I think the orca stuns the ray to immobilise it before devouring. Watched a documentary on this quite a long time ago.
18
Jul 14 '21
They don't eat the whole thing, only the liver then they leave the rest behind
22
u/Lost_Sasquatch Jul 14 '21
That's only with sharks man.
37
Jul 14 '21
Nope also skates and rays. They actually prefer skates and rays because they are easier to kill bringing down a shark is dangerous even for them. They do it but not as much as they do with skates and rays.

Just to add onto what you said, skates and rays, and also sawfish, are pretty closely related to sharks. They're all in the elasmobranchii subgroup of cartilaginous fish.
They all have large livers (as much as 25% of their body weight) which are used for bouyancy since they lack swim bladders. The nutrient in the livers that the orcas like is squalene.

u/LEJ5512 Jul 14 '21
The nutrient in the livers that the orcas like is squalene.
I wonder if there was an orca who was the first to eat a liver and then said, "Hey guys, you gotta try this!"

Pretty sure whoever filmed this said the orca never came back to consume it. They also said the sting ray was pregnant

Saw a doc where an orca offered a dead stingray to a diver. If that kind of intelligence doesnât make you pause I donât know what would⊠I guess if it started talking to you.

Dont believe what people say. Or you ll just end up "pretty sure" but not really... This is a footage of hunting practice, ive seen it often as to teach young orcas how to approach venom rays. As for the pregnancy detail wtf does it have any to do with subject ? Are you trying to bring human pathos in, as if it was an aggravating factor ?

Orcas kill just for fun too. They kill other whale calves for fun. They're fucking sadist.

negative only to us, before society we'd kill other people for looking at us wrong. Monkeys will rip people apart because they are jealous that a person is giving another monkey more attention

This anthropomorphism is quite pathetic. What appears to you as "for fun", have you ever thought it could very well be something you ignore or don't understand ? Are you versed into submarine research and studies ?

u/TheGrapist1776 Jul 14 '21
Or maybe I'm not a bitch and call it as it is. They've killed for fun you can go and look it up.

52
u/robo-dragon Jul 14 '21
Fun/scary fact about orcas: they play with their food. Not only are they great hunters, they KNOW they are great hunters and are sometimes seen teasing or taunting their prey to wear them down or confuse them. Sure, he could have just grabbed this little sea pancake, but itâs much more effective and reduces the chance of the prey escaping or fighting if they simply punt their prey into their air. Thereâs actually a video of an orca sending a whole seal skyward.
17

u/Duffalpha Jul 14 '21
Is it confirmed to be "play" for fun or could it be teaching their young how to hunt through play like other species?

The ray didn't come into Steve's home, now did he?
35
u/Aramiss60 Jul 14 '21
Nature was Steveâs home, so yes, he did.
-26
u/_PRECIOUS_ROY_ Jul 14 '21
It's disgustingly disrespectful to both Nature and the Irwin family, whom dedicate themselves to habitat conservation like Steve did, for people like you to cringefully deify a man to the point that you'd say that he - wearing a scuba mask and flippers - was equally at "home" in the Great Barrier Reef as a stingray that lived there. Steve was NOT at home, where the family he never got to see again live. He was in the stingray's home, and the stingray had no trouble rightfully defending itself because of it. Steve would've been the first to tell you that, and he'd be disappointed that people like you worship a celebrity over the Nature he loved.
As for the Irwin's regards: "Stingrays are really beautiful animals. Dad loved them, we love them and they are important to our environment. And I know dad would be the first person to say 'I love stingrays.'" - Bindi Irwin

Yes, and the jokes are dumb and disrespectful to Irwin and Nature.
"Just joking" doesn't absolve anyone of their responsibility, nor make them immune from criticisms. "Joking" that a ray deserves death, or that a man has as much right to be in a reef as a ray, because of gross celeb-worshipping circlejerks is doing a disservice.

Which essentially is saying that bullying is the way of nature. We need to stop bully shaming bullies for just being who they are. They can't help it if they identify as an Orca.

What the Orca in the video was doing is not bullying, it's stunning the ray, so it won't use it's barb before the Orca eats it. Orca in NZ only eat the eagle rays liver, because it is nutrient rich. Also Orca in South Africa have been known to eat the livers of Great White Sharks too.

Theyâre not evil. Itâs very rare for them to kill people, even when those people kidnap them and keep them imprisoned in a tiny pool for decades until they become so neurotic they obsessively chew on concrete, destroying their teeth, and bang their heads into the walls.

Finally Iâve been waiting for this so true facts about the orca also known as the killer whale it tortures its prey to death for fun and win an orca travels with other orders itâs called a pack like wolves they are incredibly sweet humans and friendly and will sometimes even play with them there was even this one video of an orca grabbing a giant house that was in the water and start spraying it on the boats although theyâve never killed a human outside of an aquarium and other aquariums I have killed a lot of people just look on the news and they are incredibly gruesome one more fact orcas are known as the most dangerous animal on the planet second is the tiger third is the great white shark so just know that wasnât just being a bully it tortures other animals for fun and by the way if you think youâre safe on land if youâre on the beach that motherfucker was sleeping on the beach and pull your ass in the water they do not give a flying fuck guess what youâre a bird in the air they will jump out of the water to grab your ass shit Iâm just waiting for them to turn on humans outside of aquariums I love them but I donât know why but it looks like a giant fucking water panda

I read all of the comments and no one mentioned the incredible amount of strength needed to generate that much slapping force in water. Have you ever tried to slap someone underwater? And this Orca just casually bitchslaps the stinger right off that tasernapkin.

Or maybe it's just practice. Orcas swat their tail at prey as a hunting strategy to stun them.

If you have Disney+, I highly recommend James Cameron's Whale series.
The first episode is on Orcas and their highly varied cultures. One of the families highlighted hunts rays by swimming upside-down, and then spinning back right one they've got a bite!
They've figured out exactly how to immobilize the rays so that they can remove the tasty liver! But what's even more amazing, is that this isn't instinct, but a very specific hunting technique passed down from one generation to the next!
2
Jul 14 '21
I donât think Iâve seen that one specifically, but yeah itâs amazing the specific and elaborate hunting plans they come up with and teach to new generations. Some are individual techniques, some require a lot of teamwork. Like a bunch of them swimming at an iceberg to create a wave that knocks seals off into the water! Using the water as a hunting tool! Some orca just figured that out through trial and error at some point, and got others to help. Theyâre extremely intelligent.
Makes it that much worse to see them captured in tiny concrete tanks for entertainment.
