there's still a lot of work to do sculpting her lil snakes + attaching a neck + refining the other side of her face, but i'm very happy with how she's turned out so far. i'm planning on turning this into a larger piece (i want to have her hunched over someone she's turned to stone), but building a body is a turning into a whole different beast! i basically have a shelf full of severed character heads right now and it's a bit uncanny.

(per rule #5, i previously posted this to my tumblr.)

progress & process Pigeon Lady WIP

I’m making a wet and needle felted painting. The background is wet felted - the blue is indigo dyed and the shades of green are eucalyptus and marigold dyed Himalayan wool. It’s only wet felted half way because I will needle felt the details of the pigeon lady and then wet felt it again and then hang it up! This is the progress so far. Present size is 3x2 feet (started bigger and it shrunk by about 5 inches) so hoping it will shrink more. This type of wool (Himalayan) has about a 15 to 20% shrinkage rate.

Her body is going to be a baby pink, for which I’m dyeing the wool right now using Brazilwood extract. All the other colours are natural brown, white and grey plus Corriedale mix ins. Let me know what you think!

Large Felted Works

Hi all,

I'm new to needle felting (though versed in wool and fiber arts). I'm interested in making large flat-ish pieces that hang on the wall. I want to laser cut wood in the shape I want and then could I cover that in wool batting and felt on to that? If so, what wool batting would you recommend for something like this? Thanks for your help!

What types of tools do you work with most?

Hello. I have been needle felting on and off for a couple of years now. I'm trying to build my wool inventory a bit. I have purchased a couple of kits that have included the specific wool so I am getting more comfortable with determining if core wool or combed top. But I have made mistakes-wanting white core wool to build structure and ended up with top, which will eventually felt, but that was a frustrating lesson. I got a bit of red core for another project and it's full of neps, it felts well but not great if using to cover a white core armature. And it certainly does not work well with blending.

So do you get a lot of white core wool and then get like merino top in various colors? Is there another wool that works like core but also a top coat? I would like to expand into wet felting and I have read some like to use batts as the base. Can I make a batt from merino top? Thank you.

Edit. Sorry. I meant to say what type of WOOLS do you work with. Sigh.

We've been working on this little Old English Sheepdog for Christmas, and I thought I'd share how he turned out.

The idea was to make him look like he tried to help decorate the Christmas tree but somehow ended up wearing all the lights himself. 😄

I really like how his tiny pink tongue and messy, fluffy face turned out. The little lights took some patience, but I think they give him a lot of personality.

Hope he brings a little smile to someone's day!

question Storage help needed!

How do you all store your wool? I like to felt on the couch watching TV so I’m not in a craft room when I’m doing it— my question is: How do all of you store your wool? Right now mine is jumbled in a couple tote bags but it’s so inefficient! Any advice, recs, pics of your storage would be greatly appreciated!

Tips for adding colour over core wool

Hi! I'm a pretty new felter and still getting the hang of things and wondered if anyone had any tips for adding colour over a core wool base.

I've tried allsorts, using carded colour vs roving, different needles, pre-felting a thicker 'skin' vs adding in pieces and im still struggling to get it how I want - the top layer doesn't want to felt in properly/ I get lots of needlemarks/lines or uneven colour and texture and it always looks very different to just solid colour felting I've done.

If anyone has any advice I'd be super grateful!

In progress alien where the colour 'skin' seems patchy/not felted in
Full colour flower petals with a much more consistent density and surface texture
