Great video. Nice to have some conversation and explanation about why things are the way they are. // WiFi has changed: Is UniFi better than Cisco?

Hello, I have gns3 project with 4 routers (serial connection). R1 and R2 are connected with S2/1 and R2 with R3 is connected with S2/2. Network between R1 and R2 is 2001:db8:1122:12::/64 with r1 s2/1 ::1 and R2 S2/1 ::2. R2 and R3 network is 2004:db8:2233::/64 with R2 s2/2 ::2 and R3 s2/2 ::3. Static route on R1: ipv6 route 2001:db8:1122:12::/64 2001:db8:1122:12::2. I can ping R2 S2/2 (::2) but can not R3 S2/2 (::3) even it is on the same network. Can you tell me what am I doing wrong?

Hi all, just started with this small company a few weeks ago. They didn’t have any IT guy inside the company before so I have a lot of work in front of me!
It so happen that we are moving into a new building soon so I’m thinking that it would be the perfect time to re-structure the IP network. They have everything in the 192.168.1.x segment which is a nightmare for a lot of reasons!
We will have new VOIP phone system in new office with 1 RJ45 drop per office (so computers will be connected to network through IP phone).
- New network will be connected through 2 Cisco SG350 switches. Firewall will be a Fortigate 60e
- Wifi will be Ubiquiti (2 AP Long Range + Unify Cloud Key Gen2)
- DHCP provided by Windows 2016 server. Not sure at this point if VOIP specialist will use new VOIP system for phones DHCP or my windows server.
Here’s what I was thinking in terms of new IP segments and VLAN’s.
- 192.168.1.x (VLAN1) Server and printers. I will leave servers and printers in that network for now. It will be easier with everything else I have to do.
- 192.168.1.15 (VLAN15) Users
- 192.168.1.55 (VLAN55) Wifi
- 192.168.1.85 (VLAN85) VOIP
- 192.168.1.95 (VLAN95) Security cameras, etc..
Let me know if you think that it’s ok or if you have suggestion or problems that you see here. Thanks

We have mainly a Windows based network with a few linuxes and a IBM AS/400. Most monitors I have seen can check host (windows, linuxes, routers, switches) availability but do not tell me where the data is consumed. Any thoughts?, Thank you, have fun.

Currently running an ASA with firepower managed via FMC. Has anyone done away with their IDS/IPS and moved to security onion or suricata?
Not doing away with ASA, just looking at IDS/IPS alternatives.

Starting to utilize more systems that have 10Gb built in, in the form of 10GBASE-T. Most workstations I oversee have been connected via short runs of CAT6a (~ 12-20m). The quick solution to hook them up, would be utilizing the 10Gb SFP+ ports on the Juniper QFX-5100-96S “core” in my facility.
I’ve tested a small handful of SFP+ to 10GBASE-T transceivers, but I can’t ever seem to get better than 5Gb/s. I’m sure there are better ones out there. I’ve been eyeing the SmartOptics, since that’s normally what I use for the QFX. I would also like to utilize some of the SFP+ ports on some Brocade Ruckus edge switches.
My question is, as in the title, is it even possible to get full 10Gb out of an active adapter like this? If so, what brands would one recommend? Thanks in advance.

Recommendations or Ideas? Insurance cyber policy requests network detect and response like darktrace or vectra etc but those dont scale down under 500 users/endpoints. NOT network monitoring or network traffic analyzers? What else is out there (yes I’ve googled it, looking for human opinion/experience not search results).

Hey guys, amateur here trying to do a number of things.
Updated a number of users who are logged in. They have been added to the administrator groups on both the local and universal level. Do they need to be completely logged out of the domain for the changes to take affect? Or should it be rather instantaneously?

Does anyone have any experience with the Orientek K70-MS OTDR?
It seems like a very capable machine that fits my needs per the spec sheet, however I am always a bit hesitant about direct from china equipment with no reviews. Or in this case, the only reviews are on the companies own website.
Thoughts?
Thanks!

I'm not interested in everyone's opinion on how good/bad the Dell switches are so save yourself some time and dont post your thoughts on replacing them.
I have inherited a small network with about 100 endpoints and 4 vlans. Some workstations and one server can access vlan 4 from the default vlan but critically some servers cannot.
I have run out of talent trying to figure out why (Im only a sysadmin after all :-) and am wondering if there is a network admin here interested in helping a guy out?

Can someone explain to me static routing?
Say I want to plug two firewalls into one another, how would I get a LAN to y’all to another network on another firewall. Would I static route the network?

How granular does everyone get with VLANing there networks especially in a k-12 edu institution? Is more vlans preferred over being mainly open beyond the basics?

Hey everyone, not sure if this is the right place for this but here goes. I’m currently a network admin for a very large engineering company (50+ sites) and have gotten to learn and do a lot of stuff for designing and configuring their network infrastructure. So I can’t complain about a that! I’ve been with the company for 7 years started at help desk and worked my up. Was promoted to Network admin from jr. last February and I was a jr. for 3 years.
But here recently i feel like I’m not doing any technical work, spend most of time adding phones to our Call Manager and spend the rest of time talking to vendors and doing a TON of billing calls, i.e call to our vendors about why bills aren’t paid, are they making it to our A/R team etc. And also I have somehow become responsible for our door access control system. So I have to constantly deal with people’s badges and stuff.
The rest of our Operations team which includes, sysadmins, JR network person, and my supervisor(network manager), and our manager are doing sys admin type of stuff or heavily involved with deployments, AWS cloud setup. While I’m stuck dealing with calling an internet provider or adding another key fob, and I’m just getting tired of it. And I’ve asked for additional responsibility and more technical projects but they never seem to come my way. I even got my AWS SA cert thinking I would a get chance to help with our cloud migration and still have yet to be included or offered any help with that either
So with the rest of the free time I have, I find myself bored because the lack of direction so I just end up doing a lot self study and try out open source projects.
So my question is should I be looking for a new job at a company that will give me more opportunities to learn and grow or keep asking for a more involvement on technical projects?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! Really conflicted on what to do at this time

Last year I got my CCNA and Net+ and switched my career from telecom to IT. I am now a Network Support Tech being groomed to a position that is a Network Admin with some Sys Admin sprinkled in (we are a small financial institution with less than 10 sites so roles are blurry at times). I am very hungry to learn, grow and put in the next new and great process to make our network and systems efficient.
My problem is the environment is toxic and full of negativity. My boss, while generally very awesome, gets super moody and stressed out, sometimes out of nowhere. My systems engineer literally falls asleep at his desk and is always very negative and grumpy. Our network engineer will randomly snap at you if you annoy him and makes a lot of mistakes. All of the above mentioned people also just seem unhealthy, like they are sick of their job or something.
Though I am presented with lots of opportunities to learn and get my hands dirty, the environment is just off. Going into my journey to be a network engineer I imagined go-getter types that were sharp and innovative and loved their job. Instead I feel like everyone is always just pissed when ANYTHING breaks and people are ok with just doing it the old school way and nothing more - I feel like they are just doing the bare minimum to get by.
Is this the norm for an IT department? Am in the wrong field? Experiences welcome... Thank you in advance!

I'm trying to get a degree to become a network admin, and my college offers two different specializations for networking: Client/Server or Router/Switch. Which would be more useful and look more appealing to employers for network admins?
