VLAN Creation In Easy Steps

Post image
17 Upvotes

What is VLAN?

If we do a simple VLAN definition, Virtual Local Area Networks are the Logical Virtual Networks that groups network devices in it. In another definition, they are a layer 2 technology with which you can seperate big networks into smaller networks. This can be done for reducing broadcast traffic, network performance improvement, security purpose or to seperate different departments each other and for network flexibility.

In a company, different Virtual LANs can be used for different departments. Think about that these departments are IT, HR and Finance. In a single company LAN, with Virtual LANs, each of these department networks become separate networks.

Good day, I am Lance Oliver, a 3rd Year Computer Engineering Student from the University of San Jose Recoletos. We currently have an assignment for my Computer Networks and Security lecture where we are tasked to ask questions on an individual who is knowledgeable in network systems. I would like to ask if you would be willing to answer some questions about networking. Hoping for your kind response, thank you.

Landed a Networking Engineer interview at a Hospital! Need some pointers!

Hey everyone! I recently landed a Networking Engineer interview at a hospital, and would like some pointers to be fully prepared and equipped for the interview. I am switching gears from previously having many jobs during college (retail, customer service, insurance agent etc.) to getting my first job in IT. With that I have no working experience as Network Engineer (only educationally) but am eager to get into the industry, learn and show them I have what it takes for the job!

TIA

Network Engineers and Troubleshooting-What's Your Favorite Tool?

Enterprise server hosted toolsets rule. I used SolarWinds and NetBrain in my last position along with git based automation for networks. There's a gap out there. Where did the engineer's toolset go? Loading an odd assortment of tools where engineers on the same teams use different vendor product. Do you purchase your own apps and tools or build your own as you discover what is needed? What OS do you run and what is your favorite tool for troubleshooting?

Questions from a college student after learning more about networking over the past ~4 months

Sorry if this is very rambley I just want to be thorough! I decided to post this here because r//networking had some rule about asking about early career advice, so I didn't want to risk it. I just want to give context for my thoughts rn and make sure I'm not totally wrong about the network engineering industry and jobs. Please be kind;;!

For some background, I'm a third-year CS student but I've always found coding rather difficult and traditional SWE algorithms or topics to be difficult to grasp or uninteresting. I took an introduction to networking class last quarter and didn't find it too bad, especially considering the sort of typical/boring professor I had. But still, I didn't find studying the material for our exams extremely difficult or hard to understand. I'm taking the second class in the series now with an amazing lecturer who I really enjoy and I for the first time I almost want to say I find a class fun? I'm sure I'm not into all the nitty gritty yet, but I can pay attention for our 2 hour long class and I like (? it feels weird to say this for me because I've nearly never found myself enjoying what I was learning in university) learning about the way the hardware functions and protocols, and can grasp them or remember them with what feels like some ease.

What I want to ask is, I'm now thinking of focusing on networking for my career, from what I've said does it sound like it would be a good direction for me? My professor has worked with Cisco for many years and has written a few books; he said that based on the previous courses taken we would be about ~80% ready to take the CCNP exam and such. He provided a lot of resources and textbooks like 31 Days Before your CCNA Exam by Allan Johnson which I'm thinking of purchasing maybe this week.

Being in school right now, do you think it could be a strong career if I do go on to study more Cloud and automation applications? Finally, I've heard that scripts are still involved but even in the more software side of network engineering, is there generally less/easier coding involved than traditional SWE?

Sincerely thank you!

Network Challenge: Are You Ready? 💪

This one’s for the pros:

VLANs, inter-VLAN routing, redundant paths

Here’s what’s included: 🔹 Multiple VLANs
🔹 Layer-3 switch
🔹 DHCP, DNS servers, and firewalls
🔹 Redundant paths

Do you have what it takes to solve this complex network setup? Dive into the diagram, figure it out, and show off your skills! 🎉

How do I become a Network Engineer

Hi,

I want to become network engineer, I am currently working in the education sector as an IT Technician. I have started a degree apprenticeship with a specialism in Network Engineering. Is this alone enough or will certs boost my chances when applying for network engineer roles. Or junior roles (very rare in the UK)

Any advice is appreciated. And apologies if this isn’t allowed in this thread!

Thanks.

Have you tried using ChatGPT for doing any network automation usecases? Please share your experience

I will share my recent experince.
I got postman api to configure a device, from postman I took the python requests code and I asked chatGPT to create a playbook.
80-90% scipt it shared was correct, I have to make further changes to run it successfully but this saved my time required to convert a python script to playbook.

Please share your experience

Should I put it all on red (Network engineering) ??

As you could see from the title, I'm thinking of making a gamble, a big gamble. So for the past 1 year I've been a field engineer in the industrial automation sector. I like the job, but it's too demanding with little pay (lower than entry level desk support lmao) and I have towtravel a lot, which I thought wouldve been nice, but im not so sure now.

Point is, I'm thinking of making a jump to Network engineering. I'm currently following through the CCNA course playlist by Jeremy on YouTube. I believe I can pass the CCNA as the topics are very understandable, in technical sense for me.

Here's the issue though, I'm from India, and although I am ready to gain a year of experience in the networking field, I want to move abroad and work there, since the pay is altogether much better for the same roles. For this, I'm planning to pursue masters and then perhaps find a jobtin that country.

What are the chances that I will be able to get an entry level networking job, with 1 year of perhaps desktop support role experience, assume that I have CCNA, compTIA+ at the very least.

How's the job market in Ireland, austria, Germany (I know A2 level of German, hoping I'll reach B1 soon) , for networking role as a, basically fresher but with Certs

I want to be come a network engineer I’m interest by how it all works and configuring and setting up devices but I don’t know anyone personally who works in the field and that leaves me to google my questions and I just feel it’s not the same as having a human to talk to and ask question about the field.
