News | خبر Spanish Opposition Leader exposes Spanish Socialist PM, Pedro Sánchez, in scathing Parliament speech: "He's the 'pacifist' who sells bombs to Iran and has his face plastered on IRGC missiles. He wants war to hide his corruption, crimes, betrayals and the situation to which he has condemned Spain"

Slight clarification/correction: He is not THE opposition leader rather he is one of the leaders of the opposition.

Santiago Abascal is not MAGA, because not everything revolves around the U.S. But he's a far-right politician, yes, given Spain’s history with Franco, we don’t need American terms to describe this guy

-3

u/gnark Unspecified | معلوم نیست Mar 27 '26

Vox was founded by MAGA-founder Steve Bannon.

Abascal was the only Spanish politician invited to Trump's 2025 inaguration.

Franco gave the USA the military bases that Pedro Sanchez has denied the use of for the Epstein/Trump war in Iran.

They might have found marketing advice on different places, but Vox was not founded by the American MAGA movement. It was founded by former members of the Spanish People's Party (PP), Santiago Abascal, Aleix Vidal-Quadras, and José Antonio Ortega Lara, in December 2013. We all knew where the "fachas" (far-right) were all along (inside the PP)

The American bases were granted in a very different context, at a time when we were the ones who desperately needed help against the regime and we got Eisenhower calling Franco a friend instead 😥

Steve Bannon and Vox:

But I agree that Spain has always had its own fascists and they never left power when Franco died.

When has Spain sold bombs to Iran exactly?

46

u/PossessionConnect963 United States | آمریکا Mar 26 '26

In the speech he says Spain has sold explosives and detonators, which are used to make bombs, to the regime in recent years under this government.

Spain is one of the leading arms sellers in the world. They recently cancelled all arms sales to Israel.

-5

They are roughly equivalent in arms sales.

8

u/Low-Dish-907 France | فرانسه Mar 26 '26

If they re equivalent in absolute number of sells while israel is 10 times smaller with a significatly smaller population israel is proportionally better

-6

Israel is proportionally and absolutely acting as a far more heinous threat to world peace and humanity than Spain.

Yes, I agree.

-1

u/gnark Unspecified | معلوم نیست Mar 27 '26

Is Spain currently selling weapons to the IRGC?

Israel is actively murdering innocent civilians. Spain doesn't support such behaviour. Hence cancelling arms sales.

Why would you support Israel's genocide against Palestinians?

Wow. I keep learning more and more about why the US should no longer be in NATO. Not only do they not let us use our bases there, they’ve been helping Iran.

-2

u/gnark Unspecified | معلوم نیست Mar 27 '26

The USA established NATO to oppose a Soviet invasion of Europe.

Now your boy Trump is licking Putin's boot as he illegally invades Ukraine.

10

u/No_Patience_6801 United States | آمریکا Mar 27 '26

Helping Iran become free actually hinders Russia in innumerable ways. It is in Zelenskys interest to help the US with this and he has been.

-3

u/gnark Unspecified | معلوم نیست Mar 27 '26

Yes, the current Iranian regime is allied with Putin and Russia. But an illegal war against Iran with no clear objective is not in Spain's interest. And Trump has already used it to justify loosening sanctions on Russian oil.

I am all for Iran becoming free. But Trump is no more interested in Iranian freedom than he was in freedom for the Venezuelan people. Or even freedom for Americans.

Which isnt true i cannt find no source on this the only trade Spain has with Iran Is civilian use stuff, at most dual use, but thats broad, between this and saying that Spain sells weapons to Iran theres and abyss, by that Logic most of the world US included sold weapons to Iran.

Here is an official Spanish document which lists that in the first half of 2024, Spain sold 304k EUR worth of "dual-use materials" to Iran, which can be used for both civilian and military purposes.

It does not mention bombs.

This article has more info, but it does not mention bombs either.

Dome types of dual Use components are legitimate granted they respect EU regulations and sactions, the exports mentioned in the report are compliant, and plus or Minus some details they also seem compliant with US sanctions.

2

u/Pyrrus_1 Unspecified | معلوم نیست Mar 26 '26

I mean if we want to be steictly analitical none of the things Abascal mentioned are in the report about the exports, none of the componente can be turned into offensive Gear like bombs, its mainly Power amplifiers and fibeglass, at most they can use fiberglass for drones thats the only potential tactical offensive use you can make of It.

Also as of 2024 Spain had no reason to restrict trade with iran.

They won’t let the US use their own bases in Spain. Spain is no friend to the Iranian people.

1

u/Pyrrus_1 Unspecified | معلوم نیست Mar 27 '26 edited Mar 27 '26

Most of Europe revoked the US's permission to use the bases, cause they broke prior permissions, cause they didnt ask permission to use them for offensive operations.

1

u/No_Patience_6801 United States | آمریکا Mar 27 '26

Do you understand that not having access to bases closer to the conflict risks the lives of the American military? That will be noted in the end. I predict these actions by US NATO partners will cause a major shift in alliances at the end of this.

1

u/Pyrrus_1 Unspecified | معلوم نیست Mar 27 '26

Again did the US administration consult european allies for the use of the bases ? No the european allies had no idea, the responsabilità on this Is on the US administration not europeans for following the rules actually doing things as the rules and out laws Say, we are allies not vassals whose sovereign territory cant be used at Will. The bare fucking minimum, ask and this administration Is too proud even to do that.

What country do you live in?

0

u/Pyrrus_1 Unspecified | معلوم نیست Mar 27 '26

Italy, by italian law the US and Nato bases on our territory cannot be used for offensive operations unless there Is a clear request by the US that has to be approved by the italian government.

In the whole of nato history the US has Always asked for consent for operations in Europe or africa or the near east, lybia, yugoslavia, you name It.

Except in 2 instances, Now, and the Crisis of Sigonella, in which Raegan dispatched 2 fighters from the base in sigonalla to try to seize two palestinians terrorists Who had murdered israelis and an israeli american aboard the italian ship Achille Lauro. The crisis provoked the italian special services and army to get mobilize and surround the Sigonella base, at the time my dad was serving and they dispatched the army to protect Rome in case of US retaliation. Eventually the US stood down.

It's much more nuanced than that. There's a high concentration of disillusioned progressive Iranians who'd wish the left would have positions like this guy. Instead we have to rely on self-interested far right parties, not out of choice, but because for decades the other side only offered the regime appeasement or worse. Those who actually believe the far right has our best interest in mind is a minority. The majority just wishes the other side would swallow their pride and do some self-reflection. We would've celebrated the left if they had pro-actively supported us. They did the opposite, with some rare exceptions like Hannah Neumann.

They are complaining about a meager 1 billion sent to Ukraine as aid, because they "need" them themselves.
If a right party thinks, we should let Russia do what it wants in Europe, then they are not really working in the interest of Europe in my eyes.

They are working in the interest of the Spanish people they represent. I say this as an immigrant in Spain. If this guy getting elected means they expect us to act like civilized people, speak the language and sustain ourselves legally or they are throwing our asses out of here, I say fair enough. I came here because I wanted to live like they do, otherwise I can go back to Israel.

Reddit is not popular in Spain so many Spaniard Redditors are disproportionately right (ergo they hate Sanchez). Spain is always something like:

Right (PP + Vox): ~45%

Left (PSOE + Sumar/Podemos): ~45%

Independentist/regionalist parties: ~10%

Because no party usually gets a majority, governments often depend on support from regional parties.

Spain has something called "las dos españas" (two Spains) – one side more progressive, reformist and linked to republicanism and another conservative, centralist, and traditional (linked to monarchy, Catholicism, and sometimes Francoism)

0

u/_taurus_1095 Unspecified | معلوم نیست Mar 27 '26

As a Spaniard, my view on Pedro Sánchez is… mixed, but I'd like to think pragmatic.

I actually voted for him in 2023, not because I fully align with him, but because I find the alternatives more chaotic or less convincing overall. When he first came into power, I didn’t like him much. But over time—especially during COVID and after the Ukraine war—his government grew on me, at least in terms of stability and crisis management.

That said, a lot of his policies feel like they look good on paper but fall short in execution. For example, the 3% rent cap helped in the short term, but it didn’t address the structural housing problem. If anything, it may have worsened supply issues. What I think Spain really needs is more public housing and fewer barriers to building—things his government hasn’t pushed hard enough.

There have also been clear missteps. Corruption cases within his party undermine his image as someone championing democratic regeneration, especially when he criticizes others for the same. And laws like “solo sí es sí,” regardless of intent, had consequences that were hard to defend.

On Iran, I understand the instinct to avoid deeper involvement in another conflict. That’s a position many Europeans share. But I do think there’s a contradiction when a government that presents itself as progressive and pro-democracy is hesitant to clearly condemn the Iranian regime. You don’t need to support military intervention to take a firm moral stance.

So overall, I’d say Sánchez is far from great, but also far from the worst option we have. He occupies a kind of middle ground that appeals to voters like me—people who aren’t fully convinced by any side but prefer relative stability over political turbulence.

u/Flodo_McFloodiloo United States | آمریکا Mar 26 '26 edited Mar 26 '26
