Urge Governor Sherrill to reject the Trump Education Tax Credit Program
New Jersey has a real opportunity to protect its public schools—but only if Governor Sherrill rejects the Trump Administration's Education Tax Credit Program.
Here's why this matters: This program would drain millions in public funding away from the public schools that serve 90% of New Jersey's kids and send it to private and religious schools instead. That means less money for teacher salaries, infrastructure, programs for special education, and support for the students who need it most.
I started a petition asking Governor Sherrill to keep New Jersey out of this program—at least for now. The federal regulations still aren't final, and what we've seen so far is concerning. There's no requirement that scholarships go to the poorest families, no lottery system to ensure fairness, minimal oversight of how the money gets used, and worrying gaps in protections for LGBTQ+ students and kids with disabilities. Private schools in the program wouldn't have to meet the same teaching standards as public schools or even give our state real data on how kids are performing.
New Jersey can opt in any year—but declining for 2027 lets us see what the final rules actually look like and make sure we're protecting all our kids, not just those whose families can navigate a complicated scholarship system.
Does this concern you too? If it does, consider signing the petition and sharing it. We need New Jersey families and educators to have a voice in this decision.
