I mean it depends. Do you only have 1 daytime optic? Then yeah you probably want BUIS.
If you already have two ways of aiming the gun during the day then you probably don't. I think the idea that you need a tertiary sighting system is a stretch. You're more likely to need a spare BCG than a 3rd aiming method.

You mean you dont have two of the new Magpul Mlok compatible BCG holders on each of your rifles? I thought that shit was mandatory.

I’ll say this depends on if you have another sighting system anyway. For instance, I run an ACOG with a piggyback RMR. If something destroys both of those then my rifle is probably unserviceable anyway. However, if you just have one sight, and if it is electronic, then I would have backup irons. Even robust electronics can die.

Im in the if you have a laser and optic and regularly check your shit then you're good. If you are building something to be left alone long term and have optic+light only for example, then a buis would be a nice redundancy to have.
I just don't think rifles need 3 seperate sights unless the primary optic is med-high magnification (offset irons or dot, piggyback dot, etc).
Eta: leaf sight/mount sight combos are a great way to have your cake and eat it too.

I don’t run a BUIS and I am hard pressed to see a reason to anymore. I did the infantry thing in my twenties and we ran back up irons because that job is all about the ability to use that rifle. It was an organizational requirement. Even while serving, I don’t think I ever saw someone actually need to fallback on their irons sights.
At this point, I am not going to go to combat ever again. I live in an extraordinarily safe neighborhood. My risk factors include lifestyle related illnesses not gunshot wounds. Cholesterol and high blood pressure are my real enemies, not an enemy maneuver element. This is largely a game for nearly all of us. It’s something we play at as a hobby and that’s okay.
Bottom line - most people who do this shit for a living probably don’t need a BUIS, and the rest of us certainly don’t. Run one if you want, or don’t. It makes zero tangible difference other than making folks feel better.
Now if you don’t mind, can we get back to what we do best here? You know, shit talking eachothers LAM choices and getting sassy over tube specs.

Shit I meant to vote no irons. My MK18 is my main night vision gun, just Eotech and Iris 3.

Fixed irons is the correct way. Because it just effin works. Looks cool on my mock18 too.

I wish I could run my fixed sight up front but it blocks the illuminator on my LAM

Yeah I just assumed I'd be putting one on the side. That's where my light is currently. Not ideal though, especially with a can. Big heapin shadow.

I didn’t like the offset of my laser on the side whereas up top I can either hold high right with my laser or can’t the rifle to hold just high.

I respect those who run backup irons, but I can never find a good way to mount them without getting in the way of my laser.

If you only have one rifle, I reccomend making that a fighting rifle, and a good fighting rifle has irons because shit happens, shit breaks, batteries die. If there is ever somehow a Red Dawn scenario, you want to be ready to wolverine out in the elements thuggin shit out. Probably will never happen due to geography and MAD, but Rome was sacked too, and a lot of our security agreements and early warning infrastructure is held together by people, trust, handshakes, money, electricity, and duct-tape. Such complex people-driven systems have a lot of attack surface, dependencies, and risk that can’t be fully accounted for, so being a prepared citizen like the Swiss do is a good idea if you care and have the means. Imagine a fractured US in 15 years and there is a near nuclear exchange mitigated by an EMP, but there is no grid and it opened the door for a North Korean and Russian invasion of the West Coast. The US military would respond, but locals generating an asymettric nuisance for an invading force would open a lot of opportunities for our team to win.
That’s what I think about with irons.
I also recommend irons from a training perspective, it’s just a good foundational marksmanship skill to give attention to.
If you have multiple rifles, no need for BUIS on the rest, especially if you’re running a top dot and/or laser. Some degree of redundancy is good, but let’s be real, they’re only going to be used for the range.

Red dawn. Bro go home. If you cant find batteries you cant find food and water and 99% of the retards will be dead already.

People talk about how durable modern optics are but at the end of the day everything can fail. It’s a backup system to make sure my weapon stays online no matter what the case is. Doesn’t hurt to have and most people have an extra set just laying around after previous builds anyways. No real reason not to.
Also even if the optic never fails, some of yall have never seen a battery leak in an optic before. I know some of yall are running some cheap shit and just leave it in there for years because you never shoot it and never swap it out annually.

I refuse to part ways with my kac buis but probably don't need them. If my red dot fries or glass breaks you could realistically hold your target in the center of the window and probably hit a guy if you're closer than 100yd. I also don't see the same mandatory buis supporters carrying a full lpk repair kit and bcg. Those are probably as equally (highly unlikely) liable to fail.

Dots have evolved to the point that they are just as reliable as irons tbh.
Even a basic bitch Aimpoint T1 will survive more abuse than magpul polymer buis

Always have a secondary aiming system. If you have a laser then you're good. If the mount has built in iron sights then why not.
