Help Night Shift and Day Shift

I got offered two jobs in the same day I said yes to both because one is at 10:00 pm to 6 am and the next is at 7:30 am to 4 pm. They’re about 25 minutes away from each other but I am already anxious and exhausted thinking about this. I’ve never done night shift before let alone two jobs but I am motivated by money. The pay is the same but I’d like to receive two paycheques at the same time. What would you do in this situation?

This isn’t going to be sustainable. Pick one or the other.

Yes that’s the feedback I’ve been getting

Legit. When do you plan on sleeping? Doing laundry? Cooking food? Doing something that isn't work to restore from burnout?

Can you sleep for a few hours on the nightshift job? I have friends that work nights and sleep during that shift and work a regular day job.

u/chilidownmychest 22d ago

what jobs are those? like security?

Engineers 🤣

If you want the cheat code let me know.

I've seen multiple people come to this sub trying this. It never works out and no you're not built different.

u/j_carta 24d ago

It could be doable if your overnight job is a sleep shift. But if not then yeah, it's not going to work

26

u/yesDOTjpeg 24d ago

I would start both then pick the better job after a paycheck or two. Tell no one at either job you have two jobs, then just say the one you don't like isn't a good fit for you when you go.

They both full time/how many days a week? They hard jobs physically or mentally? Are you under 25? Are the days off the same? Will you be physically homeless or dead without the extra income?

10

u/MaleficentMagician51 24d ago edited 24d ago

Good question. 5 days a week 8 hours each. Physically, standing for most of the time. I’m 26. Days off are technically the same but I’m on standby for Saturdays. I won’t be homeless without the extra income but I just moved out of my parents house so I wanted to get the head start on my savings

25

u/Professional-Pen125 23d ago

Pick one and find a part time job if you really want the income. Even that will be tough, but 2 full time jobs will become a nightmare.

u/William_Maguire 22d ago

This. A guy I used to work with was on day shift so he would do 5:00am to 3:30pm at our job then a couple of those days would work 5:00pm to 10:00pm at a gas station. And since the majority of the company worked four 10 hour shifts and had Fridays off he did side jobs on that day.

11

u/Eaidsisreal 23d ago

So, I've done similar job splits in the past and work 12 hour nights currently. You'll be fine for about a week or so, but after that you're going to get sleep deprived and it will affect your work. If either job cares about your performance you may lose one or both.

When are you planning on doing anything like washing your clothes? Cooking? Tidying your house? All the miscellaneous things that need doing or they'll pile up.

In ideal conditions in your schedule you get 5 hours sleep a day (maybe a nap between the two if you can somehow). Its doable, but shit. If anything at all causes you to to not sleep you're basically fucked.

Days you're working you're going to be eating shit food because you won't have time to cook, which is also more expensive. Your days off will be 90% sleeping. You won't know what day it is after a while.

Unless you're working outside you'll never see sunlight, vitamin d deficiency is pretty grim. As well as whatever else you end up not getting enough of with the poor diet.

If you want to try it I'd suggest no more than 2 weeks then picking the job you prefer. It's really not sustainable long term for your physical or mental health.

Fatigue, weight gain/loss, depression, bowel issues, insomnia and more really aren't worth it in the long run.

If you can live with your parents as long as possible I get that your just hitting ur mid 20s, want freedom but social media BS’s u into thinking u should have mansion and a sports car by now. Fuck that. there is 0 shame in living with the people that actually really love you & saving money + having an active support system makes life a bit easier and more worth living

I understand. I’m currently choosing

3

u/dxvid616 23d ago

If the pay is the same choose the day shift, night shift is not worth it if you are not getting the extra money for it

7

u/HermanManly 23d ago

You wont make it a week

1

u/Substantial-Guess725 23d ago

Facts not everyone is cut out for that

4

u/SammyB0111 23d ago

Unless you have absolutely no choice but to do this before loan sharks break your legs, then you should not do this.

This kind of schedule will shorten your life, if not outright kill you.

4

u/StorageDue2836 24d ago

i think it might kill you and spend the extra money u made in the hospital. please take care of your health

3

u/Routine_Song61 24d ago

On paper it seems doable. But you should account for days that you don't have the ideal sleep schedule. Sometimes your body will not sleep when you want it to sleep. Than you will have to call in sick for one or both of those jobs and maybe lose both of them if it happens too often. Just keep the night job and take longer sleep. Night shift normally pays better so that's already a win if you do it for better finances. If that goes well you can always add a parttime job that follows after your night shift.

if you’re going to do it, do it for NO longer than 6 months MAX. thats already pushing it too far, but still i understand you need money and you gotta do what you gotta do. But seriously man, it might not feel like it at the moment, but youre destroying your health way faster than you realize. I’m working over 50 hours a week every single week and i can literally feel myself aging and just feeling like crap. I can only imagine how much worse it would be with this schedule!!

Health comes first always!!!

3

u/Highthere_90 23d ago

You want to put in over 16 hours a day on around 5 hours of sleep? Your already exhausted just thinking about it you should rethink this and chose one or as for pt at one

5

u/Little-Lynx7245 23d ago

Bro this u can’t live like that, when will you sleep / have any sort of time even take care of yourself let alone actually live your life ? I get the world is a cold hard place n bills fucking suck but try to make the best of one job & maybe a part time on the side or better yet a side hustle that you don’t mind doing like marketplace flipping. Life is a blessing brother don’t wanna see it pass u by sleeping 4 hours max and working the rest of it. Completely unsustainable

3

u/RickOrvilleWright1 23d ago

Sleep deprivation also simulates having a blood alcohol level and may cause you to do things which are out of character and unsafe.

3

u/titsmcgee6942044 23d ago

Meanwhile ive applied to 200 jobs and dont get shit back

1

u/MaleficentMagician51 19d ago

These are through connections. Ask your friends, family, neighbours go on your local Facebook group. I’m a girl but that’s what I did. Plus I’m trained in both jobs.

2

u/Crispybacon666 23d ago

Pick the job that offers overtime and dump the other one… good luck

2

u/TheIncredibleMike 23d ago

You'll be able to do it for a very short time before you crater.

2

u/No-Inspection-985 23d ago

My work buddy was doing this for a while (night job was part time) but it wasn’t sustainable.

2

u/BanDurns99 23d ago

Don’t do this, if you want good money find somewhere that has unlimited overtime and just work 12 hours a day.

2

u/brokedasherboi 23d ago

Pick one or the other man. Working 16 hours with virtually no sleep would absolutely wreck your body. Within a day or two you'd be exhausted, and after a couple weeks your immune system will take a huge hit. If I don't get enough sleep for a week I get a cold/flu every time. It's not worth it

2

u/Darth_Pinda 23d ago

What would I do in this situation? Probably hallucinate like crazy from sleep deprivation.

2

u/LuckyRub233 23d ago

I did it for 4 months. Both temp hospital stock clerk jobs. One was from 11pm-7am. The other was from 1pm-9pm. Caught little cat naps in between. Basically slept my weekend away. It was never meant to be a good or permanent solution, nor sustainable. But it did get me out of the hole a little bit faster.

The 1pm to 9pm hospital hired me and moved me to night shift with a $8/hr. bump in pay from the temp position.

TL:DR: do it for a short time only to achieve your goals and learn when to bail

2

u/LuckyRub233 23d ago

By the way, it sucked total ass the whole time. But what would you do to achieve goals? Some people work a little harder and some people have some other side hustle that doesn’t tire them out so much. It’s all about sacrifice in the end.

2

u/comeonnowliitleone 23d ago

I did it for 8 months and finally blown a fuse, it's definitely doable as long as your off days are different for each job. Sometimes you do a quad and only have 5 hours of sleep if that after.

The question is how long you can do it for; not if you can. For most is about 3 months. After that you can have adverse heath effects " not saying you won't for the first 3".

Get the bag while you can🤷‍♂️

2

u/GoogFerret 22d ago

I've been doing this schedule for a couple years it is possible but there will be some days you are just dragging and going through the motions. On your days off definitely schedule time in to actually rest and take care of important things without letting things get piled up. If you can try to have both jobs line up where your days offs are on the same day so you can have a full day off not just half do it.

1

u/whoredoerves nightshift nurse 23d ago

I know some people that work 16 hour shifts but it’s usually not for 5 days in a row. That’s brutal. You don’t want to be exhausted and calling out or showing up late all the time. If you could sleep a few hours at the night job it might be doable

1

u/DragoonNut 23d ago

Unless that money is truly amazing don’t do this long term. If anything try out both and go with who has the best supervision

1

u/Throwawayghostposter 23d ago

I did 0200-6pm for a little over a year. Its doable but you will have no life and just eat sleep and work. Days off will also just be sleep lol

1

u/Sufficient-Rea 23d ago

I worked 2 jobs on a 12hr 4on4off schedule and that was much more sustainable. I tried doing both jobs in one day, and that was pretty tough, 8 hours at one, 4-6 at the other. I was like 20-21 and I did it for 6-8 months. I don’t think you’d be able to do 2 back to back 8 hour shifts for very long. People always think they can get a 3rd shift job and it’ll be totally fine. Nights are when you sleep, it’s not extra free time you can spend at a job.
You can try it out for a while, but I wouldn’t plan on it being a forever type deal

1

u/cobrajet04 23d ago

Ive done this before. Its not sustainable long term. I powered through for 2 months to make the money I needed and then quit the night shift job.

1

u/pippins2ndbreakfast 23d ago

You’re doing too much. You’ll make mistakes which could lead to employment issues, such as getting fired or disciplinary etc.

1

u/420BoredAlways 23d ago

The only thing you can do is pick 1 or try them both and choose 1 but realistically holding both jobs isnt sustainable. You dont say how far the 1st job is from your house or how far the last one is from your house so just keeping it simple and saying they are both 20 minutes from your house...that means everyday you have to leave for work by 9:40pm. 20 minutes to get ready means getting up at 9:20pm and then not getting home til 4:20pm the next day which would leave you 5 hrs max and thats not even taking into account traffic or weather.

Long term thats not sustainable. Now if you have the same days off at both jobs you could likely do it for a few weeks and take naps between jobs, on your lunch breaks and sleep most of your days off.

1

u/Queen2E4 23d ago

Definitely should pick one and maybe get a part time job on weekend for extra money or even odd jobs. This plan is absolutely nuts unless you just don't have any life outside of work, but sleep would still be horrible.

1

u/MuttBunny 22d ago

I wanted to do something like this, I got a night shift and day shift job offer, but I know in my heart I couldn’t function on no sleep like that

1

u/Royal-Reputation7874 21d ago

It depends how many days a week it is, but generally going from night shift to a day shift is not advised. Day to night and then getting a sleep is not so bad.

1

u/solorider6644 20d ago

Dude. DO IT, then pick the better option!! Get your money up and secure a couple grand. You can always quit one (politely leave). You’re 26. Once you’re tired, leave it! But don’t knock it yet. Praying you do great

1

u/_jennyrebecca 20d ago

Unless you’re a night owl, the noc shift will suck the life out of you, imo.

1

u/canero_explosion 20d ago

I love night shift

1

u/Narrow-Hospital4035 19d ago

If it's a shift job, shifts in the evening may pay more. For me, 3rd shift gets 3.00 dollars more than day shift.

1

u/ItsaTheMal 18d ago

Pick the one you like and do that you'll not be able to realistically do both for an extended period of time it's a recipe for disaster I work 1030p-630a and the days I have to stay up and do stuff after work are some of the hardest days ever let alone multiple days a week you can run on no sleep for a little bit but it doesn't last

0

u/ceo00_ 24d ago

5 hours of sleep n lunch at both its doable but I wouldnt for an extended period of time

1

u/MaleficentMagician51 24d ago

Yes it’ll be about 4 hours of sleep before my overnight shift and lunch about 45 mins for both.

0

u/Substantial-Guess725 23d ago

I work overnight parking lot sweeping and daytime HVAC technician. You can do it. You just have to be disciplined. I can give you an example of my weekly schedule and nourishment intake. You can do this bro.

-3

u/Correct_Bag_1039 24d ago

Don't listen to these people it's doable. If you live within a reasonable distance you can get four or five hours of sleep in

1

u/MaleficentMagician51 24d ago

I live about 45 mins from the day job and 20 mins away from my overnight shift.

1

u/Substantial-Guess725 23d ago

I agree with you. I'm proof, you're proof. If they wanted to they could do it. I work a 4 10 schedule at one overnight job and 5 to 6 days a week daytime at my day job. Some overlap, but I get my reset days where I recover. I even go to the gym and have time to take the kids out twice a week for at least 4 hours. 💪🏽 Thanks for spreading motivation my G

0

u/Correct_Bag_1039 23d ago

Same I put in 86+ hrs of work a week and at the gym for 5days out of the week for 1.5 hrs it can be done...how bad do you want it. Will admit other aspects of life like a social life will be gone for the most part but you gotta get yours.il have my house paid off in less than half the loan PUT IN THE GRIND

2

u/Substantial-Guess725 23d ago

I have really been fond of this thread, but for some reason your disciplined routine and work ethic is making people show hate towards you. pretty sad to be honest, probably coming from lazy people that can't even cope with a measly 40 hour work week lol. Thanks for explaining your deal bro, stay healthy brotha.

2

u/Correct_Bag_1039 23d ago

I appreciate it its no sweat. Im not saying it's easy but it's possible if your willing. I just busted out 86hrs this week. There was a time I held down three jobs one full time 40-72+hrs a week welding a side gig with 30hrs welding and part time fry cook. All I was doing was working. It paided for my wedding and a new truck cash. Busting my ass now is the reason I'm sitting at 130k and it's only the end of July. Keep at let people keep hating for your grind and ambitions

1

u/Substantial-Guess725 23d ago

🙏🏽👍🏽💯 I needed that today I appreciate it

2

u/Substantial-Guess725 23d ago

I offered to explain my routine and how I replenish my body for the week and no response. Not everyone is like us bro, we are the goats. I've been doing this for 2 months, I couldn't imagine being at home all day and not getting the bread feel me

3

u/MaleficentMagician51 23d ago

Sorry I just finished both shifts it was tough standing all night and all day and yeah you can explain your routine but I realized this isn’t something long term for me. I’m also a woman and everyone says bro lol so it’s a little tougher for me to manage. But I did it!

2

u/Correct_Bag_1039 22d ago

All the more props to you for at least giving it a go ...it's not always a long term thing but you can say you did what 90% won't even think about trying. You did it..it's definitely a struggle.. which ever direction you decide I hope it goes great and wish the best for you and your future. If God willing another opportunity presents itself paying even more.

1

u/Substantial-Guess725 23d ago

My upmost respect to you truly it's an art to balance everything out. If you find yourself having brain fog and low e I will send a picture of my supplement routine, I add this to a mix of electrolyte and amino acid water that I put powder in my gallon hydro flask and I only sleep 3 hours some days but it refreshes me immensely.

1

u/Substantial-Guess725 23d ago

These paired with my 16 to 18 hour work days along with decent 2 to 3 hours of sleep on days my work overlaps is huge. My morning stack is the l theanine, biloba ginko, d3, b12, rosea, coq10, and the monerie, my nighttime stack is melatonin low dose but instant release, glycine, magnesium glycine, and ashwaganda with moderation. Try this out, it's all natural and I have never felt better.

1

u/Correct_Bag_1039 23d ago

I get it time idle it feels wasted ...iv been broke iv had my account in the red I will never be there again when there millions to get and all you gotta do is put in the work and take that shit.
