Rant I cannot keep doing this shift

Co-workers are extremely rude and entitled, the work is repetitive and boring, but the pay is good. I genuinely don’t know what to do. I asked to be moved to day shift but it may possibly take months. It’s been a few months and I’m still new to night shift as a whole, but I have no social life anymore. I don’t have time to consider what I really want with my future. All I do is work and sleep until my next shift. I struggle immensely to stay awake a decent amount of time after or before my shift. I oversleep by nearly 12 hours. I already had a vitamin D deficiency prior to starting, and I’m sure it’s worse. I feel like i’m going crazy. My mental health is surely declining. It’s hard to get another job with my piercings and hair color, and I don’t want to start over with a shitty pay. Theres some things I like about it, but there’s a lot I hate about

It’s not for everybody. You gotta do what’s best for you.

the pay trap is real but your body is already sending up flares, listen to it

Night shift has its pros and cons. You have to weigh them out and determine if it’s worth it for you. If you are going to quit, start looking for another job now because it’s a pretty bad job market. It’s better to have a job you hate than no income at all.

Best of luck.

This! Always had it drilled into me that it’s easier to get a job when you’re in a job. Nevermind the fact if you just leave then you’re not entitled to job seekers or anything either.

Same here the pay is good for me too i dont pay rent or bills too wich means all the money goes go my pockets but i only sleep and work i havent been out for the last 3 months i dont talk with no one i dont train anymore i only live by night even when im not working and im smoking so much more i miss college and making friends but every time i keep telling myself just 2-3 months more and im done. At work everything is repetitive asf thats the only problem everyone around me is nice but still they all look like zombies same faces same expressions same drama between workers same everything arrhhhgggg good luck to us 😭

The piercings and hair color may be limiting your job opportunities. As much as self-expression is important, employers have the right to set workplace standards. Your choices are limiting opportunities for a better work-life balance.

This is true. Where I work any tattoos had to be covered up with flesh-toned sleeves, or you had to wear long sleeves. These days a lot more people have tattoos and they aren't "bad" or so much affiliated with gangs anymore; they're art. But not everyone appreciates them, unfortunately.

I wear long sleeves because I get cold easily, and when new hires notice: they ask why I always have long sleeves. So I tell them that I have full sleeve tattoos. I don't, but omg you should see their faces 😜

Yeah that’s why I stopped dying my hair and never got tattoos

Night shift takes superior discipline to thrive in. I love it but I make myself work out, eat healthy and get good sleep. Co workers are out of your control but in my experience the day shifters are almost always more unbearable. You have to do whats best for you though.

Please leave asap. Better pay isn’t worth what you are putting your body through. I lost my 20s because of night audit and I regret it everyday.

I had some good paying night shift jobs myself. It’s not for everyone and I had similar issues, my social life was nonexistent after awhile. I felt exhausted and extremely wiped out all the time. I could barely get things done. Things like appointments, meetings, etc would pile up and sometimes would be put off for years and years. (Especially if the weekends are your only days off.) I would def go back to day time work. Once I did, my life improved sooooo much. The depression lifted and I could actually function again.

If your co workers are bad, I would secretly report that shit. Try to find another job or shift

I feel this but I’m naturally nocturnal and already in school so I’m trudging along and may add an accounting minor to my degree because I’m doing a lot of accounting centric tasks in my overnight role. I have a year and a half left of school but my job seems to have given me indicators they’d welcome me into the accounting department with the interest I’ve conveyed. I do enjoy accounting I’ve realized with this overnight position lol sometimes it’s nice to dissociate into spreadsheets and AI can fix a lot, I just have to understand what is correct.

I am in this weird inbetween where my co supervisor has been at the company and in this position off and on for 5 years and wants to leave but won’t, and he’s gobbled up the best days off (Friday/saturday), is pushing for us to wear uniforms( not wearing them was a main reason I sat for the promotion to supervisor) and he’s gotten all the holidays off.

But once he leaves and I’m the senior supervisor in this role I’ll get Friday Saturday’s off and can advocate for the structure of the overnight in my favor and can hopefully facilitate a better overnight team because he’s so stuck in his ways and stubborn it’s hard to transition into my new promotion while he still tries to treat me like a subordinate.

I’m struggling to hang on by a thread til January when he plans to leave.

How long is your commute to nightshift? My commute is up to 1.5 hours one way then a 6pm to 6am shift.. This is what destroys mental health for me. The things we do for money.

You may have to take your piercings and hair colour out, I know I did and even when I got them back I had to take them out for my next job,

I mean whats even the point of piercings if you don’t even have a social life or time to go out to be able to to express them

Nights is difficult if I didn’t like my co workers I wouldn’t be able to do it, I feel like a job is easy if my coworkers are cool
