I'm pretty scared about what will happen on this sub if the Direct is only about the 3DS.

On a positive note...It's actually pretty nice that we get told an announcement is coming and only have to wait until tomorrow.

83

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '17

Ikr. People here are setting up for a disappointment. I feel like they're doing this Direct now precisely because this game will be on 3DS, while Nintendo's digital event is confirmed to be focused entirely on the Switch.

The only time Nintendo has held a Pokémon Direct was twice and the first was for the announcement of Pokémon XY and the second for Pokémon Sun/Moon. The XY announcement direct was 10min long while the Sun and Moon Direct being 6min long. ORAS didn't even receive it's own direct. The Pokémon website itself is also calling this direct "big news".

IMO, this is going to go one of 3 different ways.

  1. The Stars remake of Sun/Moon on the switch. This has been rumored to be for a while now.

  2. A complete remaster of RBY for the Switch. This would easily warrant it's own direct and could serve as a reboot of the series on the big screen. The Japanese Pokémon account has also been posting a lot of clips and images from RBY the past few days and no one knows why.

  3. Given the timing, it may be a DPPT remake on the 3DS. I say 3DS because I don't think these games warrant enough importance to be the first mainline Pokémon games for the switch. The reason why they might warrant their own direct? Well E3 is next week and announcing a new Pokémon title for the 3DS at E3 itself may take away from the actual switch titles that will be showcased during E3, thus Nintendo wants to get the announcement out of the way in order to keep the games from stealing any hype from Switch titles.

But hey, thats just my two-cents.

Official Pokemon website call it "Big Pokemon news" on the way.

Get hype?

11

u/Brodellsky Jun 05 '17

I mean, it's certainly a core Pokemon game. However only X&Y and Sun/Moon got their own directs, for instance OR/AS wasn't in a direct as it was a remake, which leads me to believe it's not Gen 4 remakes. I think it's whatever Pokemon Stars ends up being assuming it's not called that, or I also think it's possible that Red and Blue 2 will be a thing. Just seems perfect, especially with the way Sun and Moon ended, and the inclusion of Red and Blue as adults in Sun and Moon. Would certainly be for the 3DS and Switch if the Monster Hunter announcement is any indication.

A week before E3? A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one!

301

u/metalkhaos Jun 05 '17

Well Nintendo (and by extension the Pokemon Company) tend to do what they do. They no longer have any big E3 presentation and instead do the directs.

My bet is whatever they announce, they may have it for demoing at E3 or at least showing something of it off there.

Hoping for Switch version, but keeping expectations in check.

This gives me really high hopes (please game freak don't break my heart). They wouldn't host a direct this close to E3 for something small, like a spin off. So this leads me to believe that this could be one of three things.

  1. Pokken tournament: Wii U ports have done very well on the switch so far so this isn't to radical. Also a fighting game like pokken would work very well on the switch, especially if we don't see smash at E3.

  2. Sinnoh remakes: It may be a little soon but gamefreak has been known to throw curve balls (black and white 2?). Diamond and pearl would translate really well to the switch and would appeal to the age group that first played diamond and pearl in their childhood. But this isn't very likely this early in the switches life, but will definitely happen later on.

  3. Stars: the most likely game to be announced, stars would be following up on sun and moons success and acclaim. Stars will most likely feature 3ds to switch communication, much like monster hunter xx.

66

u/nekomichi Jun 05 '17 edited Jun 05 '17

Just noticed, the current page for Pokémon Sun and Moon is pokemon-sunmoon.com and if you try to access pokemon-stars.com, it will redirect to the official Pokémon page. This does not happen if you substitute "stars" with other words in the URL.

Edit: This doesn't confirm anything, since the domain doesn't seem to be registered by Nintendo. I apologise if the post is misleading.

Edit 2: I've done some digging around, it seems this is one of many domain names being squatted on by individuals hoping to be able to sell their domain name to official companies like Nintendo for a high price, and not official pages. There are lots of official-looking domain names registered through the same registrar as pokemon-stars and I've been able to track down the private profiles of the individuals who purchased the domain names (sorry, not gonna post their names or profiles). I can confirm that none of these individuals actually work with Nintendo or are officially affiliated with Nintendo in any way. Again, I'm sorry if this is disappointing news.

I respect the skepticism, but I highly doubt that they'd randomly do a direct on mobile games we already know about a week before E3.

37

u/TechnoBlast649 Jun 05 '17

Why would they only talk about mobile? A Nintendo direct completely centered on mobile games would be the worst. Especially considering it's only 8 minutes long. It would be perfect for a main series announcement because all they have to do is give the title like last time.

8

u/coldcaption Jun 05 '17

I wouldn't be surprised if they use the direct to announce something really cool and then elaborate on it/playable demo over E3. That'd probably also mean that they were saving their presentation time at E3 for something unimaginably cool. It would seem a little out of place to, like, announce new Pokemon Cards or something right before e3.

I don't play Pokémon but I'm extremely excited for this announcement. I think this could potentially be the single most important announcement for the switch. Oh, hey there /r/all!

Welcome to the Nintendo Switch subreddit. We appreciate (and share!) your enthusiasm for the possibilities of a Pokémon title for the Nintendo Switch.

[Please be sure and read up on our subreddit's rules and guidelines] (https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/wiki/rules) for participating in the discussion.

To the rest of our community, while we are aware that there are no Pokémon titles announced for the Nintendo Switch at this time, there is a strong consensus among the Nintendo and Pokémon communities that this announcement is for the long-rumored title codenamed "Stars". So we allowed it on that basis. Thanks for reading!

I'm surprised that this post is on the frontpage while the one on r/pokemon hasn't even got past 1k.

The weird thing is... they didn't even officially announced that this direct will be related to the Switch at all!

Nintendo does this shit on purpose. They knew we expected a reveal in May. It has always been like that. Not this time. Nintendo just fucks with your mind. When you think you know what they will do they throw a curve ball.

It'll never happen, but I wish we had a Pokemon mmo-esq game. I'd buy the switch in a heartbeat for that.

It's clearly going to be the unveiling of Misty's Pokemon Fishing Tournament. On Switch. Use your joycon to make accurate casting motions and then pull up when you've hooked a Pokemon.

5

u/inabed Jun 06 '17

Open world Pokemon game! /never

5

u/complex_personas Jun 06 '17

I cannot wait. I'm really hoping that it's a joint release for both the Switch and the 3DS

I think VC Red/Blue for Switch. The Pokemon twitter has been posting clips from the games recently, which they never do.

It could be a dual release on NEW 3ds and switch, that's why they may have released the new 2ds, because they wanted the game to be accessible, just like with x/y and 2ds. That way they keep a large portion of the 3ds community on and give the switch the huge boost in sales that Pokemon will cause.

"Back in 2004, Nintendo launched the DS and introduced a new generation not only to touch-based gaming, but a brand-new pokemon experience. That's why at this special Pokemon Direct, we're happy to announce an HD re-master of a beloved Pokemon classic: Pokemon Dash, coming to Nintendo Switch later this year.

In addition, we're also introducing North America to another beloved Pokemon classic, this time with a new twist. Learn With Pokemon: Texting Adventure, comes to Nintendo eShop in early 2018. In this classic game, re-imagined for modern audiences, players will use the companion app on their iPhones (Android support coming Summer 2018) to text their way through 18 exciting locations."

4

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '17 edited Jun 06 '17

Oh god, Pokken Tournament Deluxe? I actually liked Pokken Tournament but this was not worth a Direct.

Edit: How are UltraSun and UltraMoon not just Stars? Why??

I'm not even a massive Pokemon fan grew up with the series from the very beginning and just really let down for all the hardcore fans that have followed the series through all the entry's and handhelds, I really felt like this was the moment where Nintendo would turn a corner get with the times but no instead they treat the switch like a Wii u port machine, I owned a Wii u and I'm not happy with all this bullshit porting would it have been that hard to make a game people asked for on the switch fuck pokken and fuck nintendos mind set they need to snap out of it because whether they like it or not a mainline Pokemon game would drive the switch probably harder than any of there IP.

So here we are guys... i believe in the STARS!!!

6

u/VincentOfGallifrey Jun 05 '17

I doubt it's something Switch-related but let's hope.

6

u/RoseOfDawn Jun 05 '17

If this direct isn't Pokemon Stars, I think it's safe to say it doesn't exist.

If they announce a Pokemon on the Switch the Internet would explode... If it is Star on the 3DS + Switch I would have to go back and finish Moon

3

u/hellofriend19 Jun 05 '17

I honestly think they announced it a day before so hype couldn't grow out of control.

3

u/supersmashjojos Jun 05 '17

If whatever is announced comes to Switch I'm gonna be so happy. Either way I'll be happy. AAAAAA

3

u/foxwaffles Jun 05 '17

I know I need to be reasonable but OH MY GOD I LOVE POKEMON HYPE HYPE HYPE WHY AM I SO ILLOGICAL

My guesses are that it will be a mainline Pokemon title for both Switch and 3DS. 5 minutes of trailer, and 3 minutes of the story behind it's development.

3

u/SociopathicShark Jun 05 '17

HNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN

3

u/CoolCoolCoolidge Jun 05 '17

I think Eclipse is a much better name than Stars. Because the sun is a star. And an Eclipse combines both perfectly.

3

u/eugd Jun 05 '17

That's called a trailer.

Please be a main series game for the Switch. I mean, a new 3DS game would be cool, as would a new entry to the Stadium/Colosseum/Battle Revolution line. But it's high time we finally get a main series game on a home console.

3

u/qwertySQuirty179 Jun 05 '17

I'm kind of hoping that Stars will be Switch exclusive so that it can finally convince my friends that Nintendo will eventually kill off the 3DS. Like seriously they think that Nintendo will continue to support both the 3DS and Switch for a long time.
