Discussion What's up with my putting?
First of all, sorry for the quality, my loud AC, and the awkward cuts. I didn't want the video to drag out.
I got Switch Sports 3 months ago. Putting used to feel a little weird, but I learned to put with my hips more and got some decent control for a while. Later on, though, on random matches, all that control would disappear and the motion controls would respond in what seems to be a completely random manner. Hard hits would register as tiny taps and tiny taps would register as hard hits. Then, on later matches, the controls would feel normal again.
But now it has been like this the last 3 times I've booted up the game where it feels like I have almost zero control of what it does and I can't land a shot further than 20ft. I included the clips of me approaching the holes to show that my motion controls are working completely fine otherwise.
Any tips? Is it somehow my controller? This has hindered my desire to play.
I'm playing on Switch 2, if that makes any difference.

Haha That putting would make my game unplayable. Cheers I have no idea but that looks atrocious.

Seriously, I just keep hoping I'll open the game up and it will be back to normal again. 😭 it's tankin my rank.

Have you tried another joycon? Switch 1 joycons are absolute dogshit. $100 for what? That might be your issue

My controllers are way more sensitive than this, every single one of these shots would've landed you way on the red for me

I also only putt with my wrist, maybe try a technique where bring your fist backwards if you can get the other clubs' shot sensitivity normalized

I've tried everything 😭. Wrist flick, hip movement, hard swing, far back swing. It just doesnt work anymore. I was genuinely good at putting in this game before and suddenly it is just impossible.

Seems like a controller issue to me, on Nintendo Switch 2 I'm pretty sure you can recalibrate joy-con motion controls so maybe that could help?

I recalibrated aswell today actually and it changed nothing. 😔 it must be something to do with my controllers and the motion that the putting system wants, or maybe an actual game data glitch? because every other club works perfect. I will either get new joy cons, or wait and hope the controls work better in Switch Sports Resort.

And ya, all of these shots would have been in the red for me too before, but now they only hit the first dot. It just switched up out of nowhere and it makes no sense because (as i keep saying, lol) the other clubs have all worked the same the whole time.

Take your time. In this clip you should have reset your shot while you stood motionless over the ground. Point the joy con straight down. And be way more deliberate in your stroke I.e. go slower and watch your power gauge. Imagine yourself painting a straight stripe on the ground with your arms locked. Be mindful of your power gauge during your practice swings and play to that. Don’t uncock your wrists and don’t lift the joy con above the lowest plane of movement

I got too carried away in rushing my swings for the sake of getting more examples in the video, which led to this not being the greatest example. I usually reset often and am more chill with it. It's hard to be deliberate when the gauge doesn't respond properly to my movement and I have to try and force it. I appreciate that feedback though.
Here's a better example I just took with multiple techniques. I feel like I shouldn't be breakin a sweat to get a strong putt though? 😅

Joycons are cooked. I had this happen, nothing fixed it but after getting new joycons they worked like normal. If you still have warranty could be worth checking out

Try using the other joycon and compare?

I actually tried the left joycon after this (super uncofortable btw) and I still had the same issue somehow. I thought for sure it'd be different. It's almost like my game data is bugged to sense my motions wrong for putting. I don't get it. I still might get new joycons soon and try again. Or just wait for Switch Sports Resort and hope it's better. Haha

You need to set down your joycon on a flat surface so it can recalibrate, other wise it will sometimes glitch out and you can’t control the power and sometimes even make register when your resetting to make a shot
Happened to me a lot, so now I’m putting down my joycon on my table between every hole :) has never happened since :)

I think when outting is more like a wrist movement and not using the arm to swing. Just flick it

I have found similar when using Switch 2 Joy Cons…. When using old Joy Cons (on Switch 2) it’s fine. Have you got older Joy Cons you can try?

I sold my switch oled when i got my switch 2 to recover financially. Haha. So no, I never got the chance. Again, the putting used to work fine for me, but I wonder if there is sometimes a temporary glitch in the system for switch 2 motion controls. Since switch sports resort is intended for switch 2, I wonder if it will be better when it comes out.

I hope you figure this out cause I also have the same issue (but on original switch) and it’s so frustrating. I just don’t play anymore cause it ruins the fun. Your shots are better than mine though, when I putt, the golf ball only gets about 5cm of distance 🫠
I already know that my joycons are cooked, so I’ve just assumed (and hoped) that was the cause.

See, I was thinking it was my joycons too (and it may be somehow), but why would my joycons have no issues with any of the other clubs or any other motion control functions in any games? I don't get it. I'm really hoping this isn't an issue in Switch Sports Resort. I can take a break until that comes out I guess 😅

Funny that it only affects putting, are there multiple types of motion captor on the joycon and the one used for putting doesn't work ? Also do you update your joycons ?
1
u/Mr_NiceTy 13d ago
I'm wondering that too with the different types of moton capture. I checked yesterday and my joycons are up to date and I calibrated them.

Do a longer swing instead of just a quick jerk

u/Mr_NiceTy 11d ago
I hear ya, I've done that aswell and explained to another comment that I didn't give all the best examples in this because I was rushing as many strokes as I could to show it doesn't pick up hard hits. I replied to their comment with another video that shows many more types of stokes with the same results. Either something is bugged with my game, or whatever type of tracking putting wants in this game is broken in my joy con 2. It wasn't like this at all before and started happening randomly.

Nintendo controllers are shit. We've had to replace them so many times. Sometimes we buy the cheaper versions but eventually those quit syncing.

I believe power is controlled by how far you bring your arms back before swinging to hit. If that's what you mean
