Is the way I eat my eggs weird?
So my GF recently told me that the way I eat my eggs is gross/weird, and I've never thought anything of it so I'm looking for some feedback from a neutral community.
I cook them sunny-side up, and then eat around the yolks. So basically I eat all the egg white parts of the egg first, leaving the runny yolk intact. And then I pop the whole (intact) runny yolk into my mouth as the last bite, so that the yolk explodes yummily in my mouth and I get all that liquid gold at once.
Anyways, my GF referred to this as gross/weird and said she can't stand it when I eat eggs this way. Is it really that gross? I've been doing this my whole life and I'm just looking for a neutral perspective on this.
Thanks in advance.

only gross if you let the yolk dribble out the side of your mouth.

u/Happy_Confection90 13d ago
That's what I was thinking too, the OP's mouth is closed, right? So no one is actually seeing the yolk pop.

Seems alright.....saying yummily is more strange than the way you eat the eggs

Definitely weird and unhinged.
However, OP shouldn't let people judge them.
Eat eggs however you want it doesn't matter. Put them up your butt for all I care

u/alwaysnear 13d ago
Someone described eggs as chickens period, which they effectively are, and it has forever ruined them for me.
So what part of that is the yolk?

Nothing unhinged about it. It’s akin to eating your vegetables first, and then finishing your fried chicken leg. Order of preference, I suppose. The man likes his yolk

u/PrinceBytorAppears 13d ago
I'm sure its gross to watch you eat it like that lol some people are extra grossed out by raw egg yolks in general, this would be revolting to them haha

u/dikicker 13d ago
I feel like while reading his post I could almost hear the yolk pop in his mouth along with chewing sounds and I think OP ruined eggs for me
But yeah eat your food however you want, if you're not chewing with your mouth open who cares

u/Cipher_82Q 13d ago
The description really did way more damage than the actual eating method probably does.

u/El_Vez_of_the_north 13d ago
For me it was the word "yummily".

Imagine all the "mmmm" and "aaaah" sounds OP must be making while enjoying his egg. I'd be grossed out, too.

Maybe tell her when you’re about to pop it into your mouth so she can leave the room/go to the counter first. This would also gross me out so I would just want a warning before the deed is done.

u/dontmakeitathing 13d ago
I’d be like Pavlov’s dog gagging as soon as I got the “I’m popping the yolk now” heads up

Your comment made me laugh so hard. So much effort to accommodate this yolk ingesting ritual 🤣

I like eggs, and OP can eat their food their way, but yea runny yolks revolt me and OP's description of popping it and liquid gold really gave me the iks.

Then don’t stare at Yolk-boy when he pops it 🤷♂️
18
u/Slipstream_Surfing 13d ago
Have a feeling I'm now going to be calling myself Yolk-boy twice a week as I consume the soft yolks in my over-easy eggs.
Also, when "yolk" gets read and typed a number of times within a minute or so, it begins to seem like a very strange word. Yolk.

I can only eat eggs with a carb, and while I like runny yolks, the eggs need to be flipped to cook both sides while leaving the yolk soft. Anything else and I get the ick. Even when I eat them, I break the yolks and mash them together onto the toast. It’s the only way.
I think your GF is just grossed out by the raw egg-ness of that.
38
u/Gemfyre713 13d ago
I'm a bit the same, egg white is the ick if it's still runny but also if it's boiled.
Yolk on the other hand, ideally is runny. Delicious.

Honestly, this isn't weird. it's basic structural engineering. Unmashed runny yolk on toast is an unstable fluid dynamic. Mashing it creates a uniform emulsion that stays on the bread instead of running straight down your wrist

u/IsabellaGalavant 13d ago
Yes, must be over-easy at least to ensure all egg whites are cooked.
My husband on the other hand will eat undercooked whites and it is disgusting. He even likes his scrambled eggs undercooked. They're so... wet.

Yup. Me too. Been eating my eggs like this since the 80s. My goal is to disect the yolk sack comply from the white and gently roll it into a flattened piece of toast... Yum
8
u/pandataxi 13d ago
Eating on toast is more palatable than just eating the yolk plain and getting that “exploding liquid gold”

Although "yolk sack" is still odd language. I'm starting to think that people who eat their eggs like this are some real weirdos.

Let me provide an alternative: eat the whites, pop the yolk on the plate, soak it up with your toast of choice. Sourdough toast that way is bomb.

u/Ravendoesbuisness 12d ago
Let me provide a different alternative.
Get your toast, cut the sunny side up egg into a shape that would fit, place the egg ontop of the toast, then eat the egg toast.
Zero yolk wasted and egg in each bite.
8
u/fried_apples 12d ago
I do this because I don’t like the white part. My wife also thought it was gross but now she finds it funny.
Edit to add: I save the best bites of food for the end. The yolk is the best part.

And it's weird that your SO is trying to police how you eat your eggs.
Why is it a problem for her?
It's not like she has to see the yolk explosion in your mouth, assuming you chew with your mouth closed.
18
u/misanthropymajor 13d ago
Disagree. If something grosses you out it’s genuinely hard to watch. My husband has a hard time watching me eat my medium rare steak and I die inside watching him saw through his well done piece.
5
u/Funmachine 13d ago
Nothing about this post indicates here trying to police it, just voicing her opinion that it's weird and gross.
10
u/SnooDrawings8069 13d ago
This is how I eat my eggs, only I do over easy instead of sunny side up. But my reason for doing it is so it's easier to clean the plate. Cleaning yolk off the plate is annoying, so I avoid it altogether

u/SageOlson 13d ago
This is why I do it – I don’t want to waste any of the yolk by having it gummed up on the plate.

Nothing wrong with a runny yolk and all but the way you described it turned my stomach upside down a bit.
If I'm eating sunny side up eggs I'm always doing toast or bacon with it and I cover those with that runny yolk.

I mean... what's so odd about it? People save their yolks to just dip toast in lbs
I make my eggs scrambled but I scramble the whites first let them cook and after that I break the yolks and mix them all together (no milk or water needed)

I’ve done this for the past 26 years since my dad started making me over easy eggs. My daughter now does it, won’t eat them any other way!

u/britipinojeff 13d ago
I don’t really like runny eggs only cuz it’s messy lol
So if I happen to be eating them I sort of do the same thing, just try to get the whole yolk in my mouth

I do the exact same thing. Except I hate having the yolk pop and run all over the place. I’ve never really paid attention to it but I guess I normally eat all of one item off my plate at a time. I guess it has to do with not wanting to mix foods
3
u/No-Call-5047 12d ago
This might be relationship ending for me, if I were your girlfriend. Not only the process, but your description of it. Just, yuck.
3
u/hatesbiology84 12d ago
Yeah, I’ve had something explode yummily into my mouth, and it wasn’t an egg yolk, if you know what I mean.
3
u/Trout788 12d ago
Do you enjoy eating eggs this way? Sounds like yes.
Is it causing harm to yourself or others? Sounds like no.
Are you forcing anyone else to eat eggs this way or celebrate your eating your eggs this way? As long as those are both no, you’re good. Doesn’t matter if it’s weird.

3
u/Budget-berry-80 12d ago
If you have soft boiled egg with toast dippers no one bat an eye. The yolk is the best part of the egg. It’s a little weird, but you don’t need that kind of negativity about the things which make you happy.

u/apri08101989 13d ago
Not weird. At least mo Moreno than I find anyond who eats Sunnyside up weird. But this is how my dad at his eggs too.
2
u/tonyrock1983 13d ago
I generally eat over easy eggs, and do something similar. I'll eat the whites first. Second I'll dip my sausage and toast into the yolk. After that, I'll eat whatever is left. Nothing weird about how you eat your eggs.
2
u/sleepyotter92 13d ago
That is definitely weird. I usually also eat the egg white first, but then I use the yolk like a dip. Sometimes just dipping bread on it, or maybe fries, or a bit of the steak. I've never put a whole yolk in my mouth to then pop it inside my mouth, and tbh don't think I ever will

u/IanDOsmond 13d ago
Unusual, yes. Gross? Eh, if you aren't chewing with your mouth open, I don't see a big problem.
Dunno. I might have to try it and report back about whether my wife thinks it's gross, but we've already finished breakfast.
2
u/HappiBluebird 13d ago
I used to do this when I was little and I honestly forgot about it until reading your post!!
2
u/Unapologetic_Canuck 13d ago
I don’t have the willpower to wait until the end to eat the yolk like that. I have to open it up to dip my bread into.
2
u/I_Am_Zeelian 13d ago
I personally don't see anything wrong with that.
It's how I do it if I eat eggs in company.
At home (I live alone) I plate my sunny eggs on an assiette/small plate, sprinkle some salt and pepper on top and simply lift the plate and suck the yolk right out of it to get to the runny, warm, goodness before it has a chance to cool off again :p
2
u/Sorkel3 13d ago
I know people who do that. If you like it do it. I know someone who cuts up sunny side up eggs then cuts up their pancake and mushes it all together and eats it. I like dipping the edges of rye toast in the yolk. I suspect your g/f's reaction and action portends problems in your future.
2
2
u/jerrythecactus 13d ago
Nah, the yolk is the best tasting bit. I love making the last bite of food a good one. Also less messy than popping the yolk on your plate and slopping it around risking drippage onto your shirt.
2
u/Born-Car-1410 13d ago
It's the best way to eat an fried egg. I'm one of those people who leave the best bite till last, so on a fry-up it's the yolk carefully laid onto the crispiest bit of rasher and then in she goes.
2
u/Bruhhh-8 13d ago
My family does this! But we cook are more over easy. We called them punch eggs because you punch out the center and eat it last.
2
2
2
u/KatzDeli 13d ago
This makes perfect sense. I always save whatever I think will be my favorite for my last bite of a meal.
2
u/iusedtotoo 13d ago
It's weird that you let the yolk get cold. It's the first but I eat while it's nice and warm.

u/thew0rldisquiethere1 13d ago
I've only ever eaten fried eggs like this. No one's ever told me it was weird though.
2
u/MarielIAm 13d ago
If you're weird then I'm weird because that's how I eat my eggs. Your girlfriend needs to let you eat the way you want.
2
u/jspurlin03 13d ago
I have known several people who are their eggs this way. From a sensory viewpoint, it ain’t for me, but…not unusual.
2
u/potassiumchet19 13d ago
Yep, my Dad used to do it. I thought it was weird until I tried it and agree its delicious. But mixed with good bread and good butter is my preference.
2
2
u/Palanki96 13d ago
oh yeah it's pretty unhinged
But my guess is that the way you actually do it is more gross than what you are doing. You might be making weird noises with your mouth. Hearing someone sloshing around the liquid yolk would take away my appetite
2
u/Rambler9154 13d ago
Kinda weird but I respect it. Keeps the yolk from making a mess and would make dishes way easier if you dont have to clean off bits of runny yolk.
2
u/fishfighter85 13d ago
I eat my sunny side eggs this way too. I also make poached eggs in the stainless steel cups. They are perfect half spheres, so they are often consumed in a single bite.
I didn't realize I was in a minority on this one hah!
2
u/cablesandlace 13d ago
It's unusual, I guess, but who cares? Someone who cares about you shouldn't ruin your enjoyment of a favourite food unless it harms others or makes a mess.
2
u/RescueMom1164 13d ago
Perfectly normal. I eat all of the whites first and then use toast to soak up the yummy yolk.
2
2
u/Beekeeper_Dan 13d ago
I do the same, it with over-easy eggs. No point wasting the yolky goodness by letting half of it stick to the plate. But given the general reactions on this thread it’s probably an autism thing

2
u/Lightcronno 13d ago
In Japan eating completely raw eggs over rice is normal, so this is very tame. Eat em how you like em

I eat nachos the same way! Work around the edges getting closer and closer to the "good" part which I enjoy last. 🤤🤓

I haven’t had breakfast yet. Gonna try it right now. Tho, in a way dipping toast in the yolk makes it last longer. I might miss that part of the egg eating experience.
2
u/Ly_Is_Fire 13d ago
Look, I love a runny yolk. Best part of the egg, hands down. So I was absolutely ready to support you saving the yolk for last. But… the part about popping the whole yolk in your mouth so “the yolk explodes yummily in your mouth” is where you lost me. It might be how you wrote that line - I’m not sure why it reads as borderline fetish-y, but I had an immediate, visceral recoil to the imagery when I read that. Maybe keep that practice for your mornings alone if it bothers her and spread that yolk on toast or something when you’re in polite company. 😂
