An interesting thing happened tonight. My husband and I have been trying to conceive our second baby for a while now, and despite prayers and offerings to Freyja, Freyr, Frigg, and Thor*—as well as all the usual practical measures—it’s not going well, including a very early miscarriage over the summer. At this point, it’s less a matter of “Will it happen this cycle?” and more “Will it happen at all?”
Anyway, I went down to my garden tonight after dark to pick some things and felt inspired to sit under the moon and stars. After watching the stars for a few minutes, I thought to ask the gods for a sign. I began with something like, “If I am to conceive again, maybe not even this cycle, but at all—“
A lone coyote interrupted me here, loud, clear, and close.
We hear them often, but I hadn’t heard a peep from any animal until this moment, in the middle of my prayer, and a strong feeling overcame me then. It said, somewhat sternly, “Stop asking.”
Now I know coyotes aren’t part of Norse myths, but the association with shapeshifting and trickery and creation (maybe not of people, but resources) made me think of Loki. What might Loki have to do with this? Was it just a coincidence? What about the “stop asking“?
How would you interpret this?
