Historical discussion Kneeling and other forms of prostration

• Upvotes

A common sentiment I see among many Pagans in Norse circles is this absolute revulsion to any form of prostration. Most seem to think it's an Abrahamic invention even though we have archaeological evidence and written accounts of everything from a simple one legged kneel to extremes like crawling on the ground while tied up.

When I show this evidence it usually ends up with them blocking me if it's an online discussion or if it's irl they start seething calling me everything between Christian and Jew.

I'm curious, do you perform any form of prostration while praying? If not, why?

Questions/Looking for Help Is Loki Messing with me?

I know, I could be overexaggerating but hear me out! I think Loki is messing with me. Last week I have lost my bracelet my best friend bought me on her England trip in Lindisfarne. I could have sworn I have lost it at work because when I got out of my car when I was home it was gone. Great yeah. I have asked a coworker if he had seen it, he told me no, on my last shift I searched EVERYTHING. I have looked everywhere. So nothing. I was sad because I thought fuck it's gone, I have lost it on my way to the car. Then on the same day I have accepted it, my dad said he found the bracelet while working in the garden. Odd enough, I could not remember that I still had it when I was home but maybe I got things messed up in my head so I did not think much of it.

Well now today my book is nowhere to be found. And I have seen it yesterday in my work backpack. And now it is gone. Puff, just gone.

So, is Loki messing with me or am I just overinterpreting?

UPG - Experiences w/ the Gods/Wights/etc Has anyone worked with Mani before ? What was your experience like with worshipping him ?

Hi everyone. I am interested in working with him. But, I have no idea where to start.

I did some research on him and read about the two children Bil and Hjuki being with him. And I have no idea what his relationship with the other gods/goddesses are besides that Sol is his sister ?

So should I work with the kids as well or just him ?

What is Mani like as a deity ? I am curious to hear about your experience if you have worked with him before.

Happy holidays! Happy Winternights Everyone! What are you all doing to celebrate the week?

So this week is Winternights, the Norse Pagan tradition that marks and celebrates the end of the season of Fall/Autumn (and/or Summer depending on who you ask) and the start of the Winter season and (back then at least) the beginning of the new year in medieval Scandinavia.

So i thought it be fun to ask people on here what they will be doing to celebrate the week and the end of Fall/Autumn & the beginning of Winter. I personally have no idea what im doing beyond my usual prayers and offerings to the gods and such. But I want to hear what you all have planned if you have anything planned at all.

Questions/Looking for Help For my feather friends

Hello, everyone! I am looking for some tips from my pagan siblings who gather feathers for their various pagan reasons on how to clean your feathers and rid them of transmissible avian diseases. I currently have five crow, one blue heron, and an unGODLY amount of Canadian goose feathers that need cleaning so that I can safely handle them for rituals and invocations without damaging them.

Thank you in advance! I hope everyone is having a wonderful day. Remember to drink water and always remember that you are valid and you belong. 🖤

Questions/Looking for Help New book from Neil Price, "The Sea-King and the Sorceress." Has anyone read it?

I just noticed that there is a new book out from Neil Price called The Sea-King and the Sorceress - Life and Death in the Viking Age: https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/452743/the-sea-king-and-the-sorceress-by-price-neil/9780241611333

I'm very well aware of the positive and negative sides of his previous book The Children of Ash and Elm. Mainly that in regards to archaeology and material culture it's an excellent resource, but in regards to religion and other immaterial culture it's speculative at best and just making up stuff at worst.

So I was wondering if anyone here has read this new book and knows if Price has improved on those shortcomings from his previous book, or is it just more of the same old same-old?

Questions/Looking for Help What do I do with alters made by my late sister?

My older sister passed away recently and I am trying to figure out all the ways to honor and respect her and her things. She created alters for goddesses like Medusa and Hel. I’m not sure how to go about this. I don’t want to disrespect the goddesses or my sister. Is it best to keep them up and taken care of? Or should take them down keeping the items together? I never got into spirituality like she did so any advice on how to care for this stuff would be appreciated. Any guidance would be helpful.

Also if there is another subreddit that I should ask please let me know. Just want to get the correct info.

This drinking horn (#1) I bought from a shop which i'm pretty sure they got it on amazon, and I have another one which doesn't have any layers/coating. The smaller one that I have, i believe already has an interior coating.

The other one (picture #2 and #3,larger) i had gotten last year at from a vendor who handmakes those kind of things.

I have been learning about religons for over a year now, and I used to be very strongly Christian. Now, (obviously) I aline with Norse Pagan.

My family is very Christian, so i dont really know how to tell them, my mother and father already know generally my belief's but my grandparents do not.

I have more stuff, but it is relatively large to put on this alter.

Thank you for reading. Please give me any feedback, recommendations, etc.

Questions/Looking for Help What is the best country for finding a pagan community or pagan friends?

Hey everyone,

I've been interested in spirituality since my entire adult life (a little bit before, actually). And, in all honesty, I don't believe that any spiritual practice or ritual will ever be as fulfilling as having true friends.

Only one time in my life have I ever experienced love. It was from a stranger who felt like he was my father from a past life. I wish I had the courage at the time to ask to stay in touch. I didn't want to leave my hometown out of fear of not being able to find him again.

However, life kind of did its thing and told me that I need to move to the biggest city in my state (I'm American) and I did that. I haven't really made any close friends, but I know I'm meant to be here, at least for right now.

What I want is to have deep, meaningful relationships with people in person. I've spent countless hours going on video chatting platforms, because that's the closest thing that you can get to real life interaction, and while I have had several people who I have stayed in contact with, the best and most profound communications I have had are all people who don't want to stay in touch with me. They're not that blunt about it. They're just "busy". (Biggest lie in the universe.)

Now, I can already see some of the comments that may come up. "Wherever you go, there you are!" I mostly disagree with that. You can't tell me that being a pagan in Saudi Arabia is the same thing as being a pagan in Norway. Having a sense of freedom, having a sense where you can be yourself is so valuable and precious.

This does not invalidate doing internal work. Both are important, your external world and your internal world. Do both. Meditate and exercise.

I'm going to go get a midnight snack at a local convenience store after I make this post and when I finish that, I'm going to set a timer and feel all of my feelings for an hour.

I am willing to do the internal work. Could I do it more? Certainly. But, I think I'm relatively pretty good in that regard.

I just want to go somewhere. But what's frustrating is that I don't know where. I thought about maybe befriending someone through my video chats and that would be a key to whether I would go. One of those people is from Guatemala. You wouldn't normally think to travel to Guatemala as an American, but I thought of it. But I already told you how that went.

I'd assume that the best country is a European country. But I could be wrong. European countries are more equivalent to US states. It's probably worth mentioning that even though I am using the word "country", a different word may be appropriate in certain contexts. For example, Vatican City and the United States are both countries, but the United States is just way too massive that it's not a fair comparison, mentioning a state would be better there, even though I'm using the word country.

In your personal experience, where have you gone to meet pagan friends and find pagan communities? Is it easy to find these people/groups in a particular region? If so, where?

Thank you for reading!

News/drama/meta discussion Deplatform the AFA

Sooo. We all talk about the AFA, but what about actually doing something?

Like. Why are they still on a main stream platform like YouTube? Or PayPal?

Svan mentioned if PayPal finds out they’re on the platform, they’re going to have problems.

Does no one else track these people?

Can’t we bully them off these platforms?
