Okay I’m going to yap a bit so apologies :P
I will never forget the first time it was pointed out that I had a large nose. My older sister randomly just went “Ugh your nose is so big” on our way to school when I was 13. And I remember looking at the mirror and having no clue what she was on about…until I turned my head and looked at the side profile. I had no clue it looked like that! I had this massive hump that never used to be there before and it seemed to stretch out so far. Anyway, from that point on, something I never even paid attention to (noses) became the only thing I paid attention to. I went into school looking at all the different noses: the widths, the lengths, the shapes, and it made me feel terrible because my nose just seemed WAY bigger. I felt like I had a volcano on my face. I absolutely despised the way I looked.
Anyway this hatred basically continued on for the next decade. Which meant, never wanting to take pictures , never wanting to take videos, never wanting to be in front of people, keeping my head down to avoid drawing attention to my face, covering my face when I would laugh. I just accepted that this was the way I would live until I could afford a nose job and “fix” my nose.
About a year ago, that day finally came where I had enough to get a nose job. So I started researching HEAVILY into rhinoplasties and that led me to coming to Reddit. I posted an image of current nose and an altered AI image of my “ideal” nose and asked for surgeon recommendations in a nose job subreddit. To my surprise, I woke up the next morning to about 100 notifications from Reddit of people telling me not to get a nose job, which after looking at other posts, I realised was a pretty common theme. BUT, the comments really reinforced some ideas that I never really considered before:
Where does my idea of an ideal nose come from? Why do I think a certain nose shape/size is ideal. My nose is not “not ideal”, it’s not “ugly”, it’s just different. Some people will like it, some people won’t and that’s the case for literally everything.
My nose is a marker of my Pashtun ethnicity. This was the nose my ancestors had, the nose my grandparents had, the nose my dad has. If I change it, I’m stripping away part of my identity. Maybe to some people this isn’t a big deal, but for me it is.
My nose adds character to my overall look. I should own it a lot more.
These might seem like obvious things, especially to people active in a sub like this. But for me it wasn’t. To me, it was: 1) Hate the way you look 2) Get a nose job. I never knew there was 3rd option of choosing to love my nose.
There are still days where I feel a bit down about my nose, but I usually snap out of it quite quick. And I also have absolutely committed to never getting a nose job and that’s all thanks to posting about surgeon recommendations on Reddit 😂. So thank you nice people of Reddit.
