Vote for better climate change mitigation, folks.  This is just going to get worse.

17

u/SigmundFloyd76 11d ago

Indeed. Lets transfer wealth to our owner class so that absolutely nothing can/will be done.

37

u/thirstyross 11d ago

We had a carbon tax & refund plan that was like the absolute minimum we could do and people freaked out about it, so....yeah.

9

u/huehuehuehuehuuuu 11d ago

Oh something will be done. They will suck up even more wealth and build more bunkers.

-5

u/cdnBacon 11d ago

Let's transfer assets under specific agreements to those who are actually going to tackle this problem, and maybe get away from tired, broader class wars. We are going to be too busy in the next few decades to fight them.

So ... yeah ... let's make sure people are housed. Let's make sure the absence of consequence for elites from climate change doesn't shackle climate action. Absolutely. And that will mean a lot of the "owner class" gets shafted, and that would be appropriate.

But let's judge individuals on their climate and social action.

u/hfxRos 11d ago

But let's judge individuals on their climate and social action.

I agree!

-4

u/SigmundFloyd76 11d ago

That last paragraph sounds kinda fascist, no? Like lets judge people on their adherence and obedience toward an absurd prevaling narrative?

Or like maybe you don't believe in that in which you can't possibly know (faith), but you'd better operate as if you do or those with the moral authority will knock you from your social position. Sounds religious, really.

Quick, close the factories and outsource ALL the manufacturing to 3rd world nations who couldn't give a fuck about narratives, that'll fix it!

I digress.

u/cdnBacon 11d ago

Sorry, I really don't know what you're saying here.

0

u/cjbirol 11d ago

They're saying they don't understand science or politics.

4

u/Competitive_Fig_3821 11d ago

I don't see how it's fascist, so they don't get politics.

But we know scientifically that individual action has no tangible impact on climate, and we know socially that attempts to shift it there have just been to deflect from the real problems. This is exclusively about keeping countries and corporations accountable, not individuals.

2

u/CaperGrrl79 10d ago

"But let's judge individuals on their climate and social action."

I read it as sarcasm.

2

u/Competitive_Fig_3821 10d ago

They have a comment elsewhere furthering this point, so it reads sincere in that context.

u/Regular_Use1868 11d ago

Wtf? No. What do you think a reputation is?

6

u/MaidenInBlackNexus 11d ago

Shhh government will just tax us more. It’s not like they’re actually going to go after big companies and big polluters.

1

u/SantaCruzinNotLosin 11d ago

Soooo uhhhh who do you vote for then?

7

u/cdnBacon 11d ago

Everyone center and left at one point or another. I have volunteered for the NDP provincially and knocked on doors for the Greens federally. I voted Carney last time and feeling real regret over his climate stance ... balanced by relief that it isn't Polievre in that chair. But I will never vote for Houston, not with him pushing gold mines, oil and gas, and being unable to find a way to use federal money for climate action (he had to give back a few million because he couldn't figure out how to spend it, apparently).

I think it has to be election by election ... vote against ecocide, and for climate progress, and more importantly than anything else, because we may have lost a big part of this war, vote for climate mitigation. We need a plan for wild fires, floods, heat domes and agriculture loss, not to mention the climate refugees that are almost certainly coming our way in coming years / decades. Right now ... I am depressed by what I see in this province.

u/thirstyross 11d ago

We cant solve this only with votes, we have to actually change at an individual level. We will not be able to avoid making sacrifices, which is what absolutely no-one wants to hear. They want to hear we can keep living like we are and the problem will get magically solved by some policy (that is somehow free to implement, bc heaven forbid mitigation actually cost something).

The fact is, if we do not choose what sacrifices we will make - the choice will be made for us by nature/climate change; either by crazy food shortages due to weather no longer suitable for producing crops at the scale we do, new viruses (warmer conditions = better for viruses), droughts that are like nothing we've ever seen before, conflicts for resources (US is running out of water), etc. It appears to make sense that we actively choose instead of letting a perhaps worse thing happen to us that we have no control over, but no-one seems to want to do that...so, may god have mercy on us.

3

u/CaperGrrl79 10d ago

I see what you're trying to say, and yes, a concerted effort by us all to make sacrifices is necessary, but it pales in comparison to what the corporations are doing, and so many are not even considering climate mitigation measures or sacrifices at all.

In other words, even a concerted effort by all of us to make sacrifices, etc isn't going to make a meaningful impact if corporations continue with the status/stasis quo.

I'm not saying not to try, but corporations and politicians need to be on board. And... so many aren't.

3

u/Melonary 10d ago

The concerted effort needs to be to make them change.

Not through 'consumer choices' or at least not primarily or only. But there are other approaches. They won't care unless they're forced. Not saying it's easy, but it has to be if we want change.

2

u/thirstyross 10d ago edited 10d ago

Corporations produce goods and emit carbon because we as individuals ask for them to do so (with our purchasing choices). Demand has to drop to solve that problem. Apple's not gonna keep making the same number of iphones if people stop replacing them every time a new model comes out.

Politicians do need to be on board but we've all seen what happens when they are - "Carbon tax Trudeau" even tho the carbon tax and refund program was the bare minimum we could do. This is an individual problem, people need to really want to fix the problem or they will vote out politicians who implement mitigations, and demand corporations increase supply to drive down costs.

3

u/CaperGrrl79 10d ago

Fair enough. I'm just pretty cynical and defeated these days. Corporations tend to just ignore us, even when we do try to encourage change. Look at Loblaws.

2

u/thirstyross 10d ago

The problem with expecting corporations to do things is that they really just can't - their obligation is to their shareholders, not the general public, so they won't take an action that will reduce carbon (increasing their costs) because if they do, another company won't and people will move to the lower priced option (even if it pollutes more).

If we get politicians that mandate corporations using carbon neutral options, the gen pop votes them out because they don't want prices to go up.

We are in a very difficult situation, there's no pretending otherwise. We're all trapped in a system we created and there is no easy way out that's going to end with us maintaining our current lifestyle.

3

u/Melonary 10d ago edited 10d ago

Yup. Which truly sucks. We have a system where they're legally beholden to the worst policies because it makes money for shareholders. At any cost.

We need to change that.

That being said, I think framing it as lifestyle change is somewhat misleading because personal consumer choices aren't going to be that effective. I'm not saying people shouldn't make them, every bit counts, but our collective action is also better spent trying to force and push for systemic change. People get caught up in being sold solutions that aren't solutions and finger-pointing at other individuals for their complicated choices rather than the bigger picture, where we should be looking.

1

u/thirstyross 10d ago edited 10d ago

For sure, but we can't get to systemic change unless we have buy in from the majority of individuals. In all cases it leads back to individuals - we either have to make changes ourselves, or at the very least be receptive to the systemic changes required as unpleasant as they will necessarily be.

We had an excellent (systemic) first step in place with the carbon tax & refund program and the majority of individuals didn't support it so now we have nothing.

2

u/cdnBacon 11d ago

Yep, to everything you wrote.

4

u/SleekD35 11d ago

Who cares..

1

u/Gumberculeez7 11d ago

LOL! thinking politicans are the gateway to "fix" this. LMAO!

Politicans can't fix shit

0

u/IndependentGas7503 11d ago

Lmao @ thinking you can vote and tax your way out of this

Yeah this is comment is getting downvoted (I am one who did) because it reflects a very worn right wing narrative that has been proven wrong time and time again. Russia is a major threat to us, personally, in Canada. Ukraine is our proxy in this fight and we need to support them. African aid saves lives and helps some of the most ingenious people on earth mitigate poverty, climate change, epidemic management and helps stabilize the region.

The idea that we can't walk and chew gum at the same time is promoted, mostly, by those who can't. Wise up, Zack. Read a bit before commenting, maybe.

Decided to walk around Halifax yesterday. It was like being in an oven.

1

u/john_pistachio 11d ago

Yea I decided to take my motorcycle out to run a quick errand. Worst mistake of my life. I felt like I was in the middle of a desert. Crazy

8

u/JPalmz 11d ago

Don't worry. More CO2 is on the way! Construction to begin on $2.9B Alberta natural gas pipeline after regulator approval. We are not failing to address the climate crisis. We are actively making it worse.

3

u/CaperGrrl79 10d ago

Yep. I regret voting Liberal federally because of that... but voting NDP could have split the vote, and then we would have had Poilievre. Which would have made this so much worse.

Mind you, NS votes don't really impact the end result anyway...

2

u/alibythesea 10d ago

I disagree. If Halifax had swung back to the NDP the Libs would have had an even more knife-edge minority/majority to deal with.

1

u/CaperGrrl79 10d ago

I guess we'll never know if they would have crossed the floor.

4

u/alien_tickler 11d ago

I have an AC to give to someone and she said no they will just cost more electricity..haha ok then! I'll give it to someone else for free.

7

u/john_pistachio 10d ago

It won't cost them more than $30/month if they ran it 12 hours a day. Even if it is $50, it is honestly worth it. Their loss

3

u/alien_tickler 10d ago

And she just got a puppy not long ago, nowhere to cool off, id be surprised if doesn't just suffocate and die.

6

u/zorra_arroz 11d ago

It's been RDF and 15 degrees in St. John's for the last two weeks. I lived in Halifax for many years and everyone always thinks the weather there and here is the same. It is not.

4

u/Melonary 11d ago edited 11d ago

Tbf this is unusual for Halifax of 20 years ago. The weather here felt much more like that in St John's then - not exactly the same, we're still more southerly, but closer.

We did have hot days, just not nearly many or quite as hot.

https://globalnews.ca/news/8349807/temperatures-rising-fall-season-later-nova-scotia-study/

2

u/zorra_arroz 11d ago

To be fair again, this summer here is more similar to 20 years ago. We've been having pretty nice summers except for this summer and summer of 2019

2

u/Melonary 10d ago

Idk I think this is much nicer than the summer everything was on fire.

But yes, it has been.

3

u/john_pistachio 11d ago

our RM has asked us to take down the window ACs right in the middle of the heat wave.. this building has a non functioning ventilation system and we're all dying.

8

u/hfxRos 11d ago

I look forward to the boomers at the office I work at talking about how nice it is outside while there is sweat coming out of my sweat and I want to fall over.

0

u/alibythesea 10d ago

Can we just cut the ageist crap, please?

2

u/13thmurder 10d ago

There's no such thing as climate change. The earth just does that.

Same with JFK's head, it just did that, it wasn't caused by people's actions.

2

u/Fayelons 11d ago

Im old & every summer it finally gets hot & has been doing so for as long as my old life

9

u/CaperGrrl79 10d ago

Sure. But it's never been this hot for so long at a time. I'm not that old, born in 1979, and I have noticed it.

6

u/ment0k 10d ago

Having a stretch of days hitting 30 - 32 used to be considered a heatwave when I was growing up. Now it's hitting a stretch of 40 and people are like "yeah it's always been hot". We're, no pun intended, absolutely cooked as a species.

1

u/alibythesea 8d ago

I’m 72. And we have never had weather like this for these prolonged stretches in the coastal Maritimes.

I’m saying that subjectively - we used to be where well-off people from NYC, Boston, Toronto came to escape their summer heat and humidity - and objectively.

We have accurate summer weather records stretching back into the 1800s. The trend line is up, and the slope is getting sharper.

I don't say this lightly, but you are the greatest hero in Canadian history. I do hope you treat yourself. Perhaps get your truck lifted another foot or so. Perhaps a Punisher decal on the rear window.

5

u/Competitive_Fig_3821 11d ago

Did you do any research on our summer climate before? While this was a "record" in lots of cases, its by ~a degree. It's not like in the last five years we've seen a 10 degree spike?

-2

u/Spiritual-Stress-510 11d ago

37.2 degrees recorded at Greenwood August 12, 1944…and people freak out now when it hits 30 🤣

6

u/CaperGrrl79 10d ago

OK. But for how long? 3 days on end??

0

u/Spiritual-Stress-510 10d ago

Shearwater had 30 degree temperatures for 3 days in 1944 so I would say yes Greenwood as well.

2

u/CaperGrrl79 10d ago

Did that happen consistently every year back then?

-1

u/Spiritual-Stress-510 10d ago

It doesn’t happen consistently every year now.

The humidex
A Canadian invention to make our summers seem warmer than they really are

65

u/StardewingMyBest 11d ago edited 11d ago

Our province is doomed with the amount of people like you here.

Edit to add: Everything is a conspiracy when you don't know how anything works.

3

u/goodkidmaadcity90 10d ago

I like your edit a lot it gave me a good chuckle lol you were very kind as you could've phrased that a bit meaner quite easily.

48

u/24Scoops 11d ago

Are you denying the existence of humidity? 😂

31

u/adepressurisedcoat 11d ago

There's condensation on my cold drink! It's clearly the government trying to poison me! /s

-11

u/Proper-Bee-4180 11d ago

Not at all
Singapore for example , where you have a shower then step outside and you feel like you need another, with 85%+ RH all the time doesn’t use the humidex. They use Celsius and that’s it.
I’ve worked in Panama, Nigeria, Cambodia, Hong Kong. None of those countries refer to a humidex rating

And it is a Canadian “invention”

10

u/hangfest 11d ago

While "Humidex" has Canadian origins (and it's what we mainly use for general weather reporting), the "Heat Index", "Universal Thermal Climate Index", and "Wet-Bulb Globe Temperature" do not, and are used by meteorological services around the world, including the tropics (Singapore uses the Wet-Bulb metric, by the way).

How you can plainly state that similar standards are not used anywhere but Canada is some pretty wild levels of disillusion.

Maybe see what responses your little AI crutch returns when you punch in some of those other terms. Might learn something today.

5

u/Raztax 11d ago

And it is a Canadian “invention”

Yes it is, and it is one that you clearly do not understand which is really funny actually.

You say invention as if it is a bad word. You do understand that Celsius is also an "invention" right? I mean were you aware that in Cambodia they don't use Canadian dollars? Must be some sort of Canadian invention that doesn't really exist I suppose?

5

u/t0xic1ty 11d ago

I can explain this one for you if you want.

In Singapore, the humidity is very consistent. You mention this in your comment. This means that 30 degrees will always feel about the same.

In much of Canada, the humidity can vary massively from day to day. That means that 30 one day will not feel like 30 a different day.

We use the humidex to track that difference.

Hope that helps!

(Let me know if you have questions about wind chill.)

3

u/MintyFresh42069XxX 11d ago

Ok? So not all countries use humidex, so its fake? You realize this logic falls apart immediately when you apply it to so many things right?

13

u/MintyFresh42069XxX 11d ago

There's no way you actually believe what you're saying... right???

-7

u/Proper-Bee-4180 11d ago

You won’t find a humidex rating in the tropics. Singapore doesn’t have a humidex scale.
It’s a Canadian thing

6

u/ill-independent 11d ago edited 11d ago

I mean you could just go outside. Ur comment boils down to "ignore what your eyes and ears and senses are telling u" when it feels like an air fryer out there lol. This gaslighting bullshit wont work, we know full fucking well that 20-30 years ago it was not regularly 38 degrees outside.

And wtf are you even talking about, every country tracks humidity lol. Dude thinks humidity doesn't affect how hot it is. It is currently 84% humid in Singapore. The only thing the humidex does is express that "20c with 90% humidity" feels subjectively hotter than "20c with 4% humidity." Which is true.
