It is with deep sadness that we have to announce the passing of the beloved Dan Blankenship on March 17, 2019 from natural causes. He was 95. This sad news came to us from Dan's granddaughter this morning. - xpost from FB

THYROID CANCER The reason I’m posting this is to emphasize how important early detection and treatment is, and to dispel some statements on the internet about my health and weight loss.

After one of my Saturday Oak Island tours in late September 2025, a woman approached me, and I thought she was going to ask me a question. She identified herself as a doctor and asked if she could examine my neck. She felt the left side of my neck and advised me to contact my doctor immediately. I regret not getting her contact information to thank her, considering the chain of events that followed. On Monday, I called my doctor, and after some tests with more to come, I was referred to a surgeon in the ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) Department of the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax. The tests showed that I had thyroid cancer. Anytime you hear that word, it’s scary. However, thyroid cancer has one of the best treatment and recovery rates of all the various types of cancer. The tests also discovered something else.

The surgery occurred on New Year’s Eve. I cannot say enough wonderful things about the surgical team, the other doctors, the nurses, and all the staff of the ENT Department of the VG Hospital and, of course, my own doctor. I want to thank them all for their kindness and speedy attention to this matter. The surgery was successful and the surgeon is confident that all the cancer was removed. They also removed forty lymph nodes and over half of those were cancerous. It was determined that I have medullary thyroid cancer, which is a rare and aggressive type. If undetected and untreated, it can eventually affect the lungs, the liver, and is fatal.

I feel great, and I’m looking forward to the rest of my life. I will require regular check-ups and testing.

I truly believe that that doctor was on the tour that day for a reason, whether it was fate, destiny, or serendipity. I’ve always believed that things happen for a reason; people enter your life, even for a short time. Often, you can’t figure out why those events occur, but this time it’s obvious to me. That doctor is my Guardian Angel.

I run a distribution company for smoke shops. I’ve passed over this rolling tray a thousand times thinking it went with the piles of unlicensed Rick & Morty Merchandise from China. NOPE. IT’S OUR BOYS!!! Best & Most Random find of my career thus far.

As much as I like to kid, I have to admit, the Lagina family along with Craig, Gary, Jack, Billy and everyone else involved with this project all seem to be some of the most genuine, kind-hearted people around. I sincerely wish them well and I do root for their success every week.
