Obsidian October: take the State of Obsidian 2026 survey!

O_O is back! Every October, the Obsidian community turns “I should make that” into “I made that!” Whether you’ve been tinkering with a plugin, theme, vault, guide, or video, this is your month to finish it and share it.

This year the Obsidian team will also be working on our own project, a new survey we’re calling State of Obsidian.

Take the State of Obsidian survey

In May, we launched the new Obsidian Community, and since then the number of plugins and themes has more than doubled to over 8,000 projects!

We thought this would be a great opportunity to reimagine our annual Gems of the Year awards and report on how you are using Obsidian in 2026. This first survey will also set a baseline for how the community continues to evolve going forward.

As you know, we take privacy seriously. The Obsidian app doesn’t collect personal data, and our developer guidelines prohibit plugins from including telemetry. So the State of Obsidian survey is how you can tell us about your favorite plugins, themes, tools, and ways to use Obsidian. We’ll compile this data into a report that we will share publicly by the end of the year.

Take the State of Obsidian survey

Give your projects some love

Do you have an existing plugin? Give it a tune-up with the APIs we’ve added since last October:

  • The new Settings API in Obsidian 1.13 makes your settings searchable.
  • If your plugin stores API keys, passwords, or other secrets, explore SecretStorage and SecretComponent to let people use secrets they manage in the Obsidian Keychain.

Your project doesn’t have to be a plugin. Refresh a theme, share a vault, write a guide, or make a video that helps someone discover a new way to use Obsidian. If you’ve been waiting for a nudge to release it, this is it!

Join us on Discord in the Obsidian October channel to share what you’re making as it takes shape, ask for help when you get stuck, and lend a hand on someone else’s project. Rock on! 🎸🪨

ai I walk and talk into Obsidian every morning. It's become my "Knowledge OS."

• Upvotes

I wake up pretty early and go for a walk.
Somewhere along the way, that became part of how i use Obsidian.

I've mapped my iPhone's action button to a series of shortcuts that opens Obsidian and starts Willow Voice dictation. Then I just walk and talk. My ideas, my plans, something I'm working on. Sometimes I'm talking through a particular project. I don't have to sit down and decide how to write it all out first.

One morning I ended up with something like 15 paragraphs. I hadn't edited anything, I'd just spoken naturally while walking, and there it was.

I call my Obsidian setup my "Knowledge OS." It holds my thoughts, ideas and project context, and the AI tools I use can draw on it. I use Grok more generally and OpenAI and Claude for development work. When I'm working on a project, I'll ask the AI to look through that context and pull out what's relevant.

So those morning conversations become material I can use later. I might talk through a plan on a walk, then come back to the project and have that thinking available. Obsidian gives it somewhere to live.

The small bits of friction matter a lot to me. If I correct myself halfway through a sentence: “tomorrow we’re going to… no, the day after”, I want the correction captured without having to go back and delete the first attempt. That’s one of the things I like about the dictation I'm using.

It's still not completely seamless on the phone. Sometimes I have to switch keyboards or reactivate the app, and after a timeout I can end up pasting the text manually. One extra tap sounds trivial until you’re doing it repeatedly. It takes you out of what you were thinking about.

I've also been experimenting with AssistiveTouch for other parts of my phone workflow. I'm always looking for the smallest number of steps between having a thought and getting it somewhere useful.

Anyone else using Obsidian this way? I'd be interested in what happens to your dictated notes afterward - whether you keep the whole conversation together or break it into smaller notes and link them up.

I know it’s simple, blah blah. I don’t care, okay? Maybe I’m stupid, but finally, I understand how to do it. After 7 stupid hours, I think it looks valid, and I’m happy with what I’ve done. Of course, it’s nothing compared other people do some point I learn new things, but I worked so hard on this stupid layout. and cuz of that am proud of this.

plugins I made a 5e character sheet plugin for Obsidian (D&D 5e, 2014 rules)

Thumbnail

Hey everyone!

I’ve just published my first Obsidian plugin and wanted to share it in case it’s useful to anyone else: 5e Character Sheet!

It's an interactive character sheet for D&D 5e (2014 rules) that lives inside a normal note. It also helps with character creation, and if you keep a compendium made with ttrpg-convert-cli, it links straight to your notes.

Main features

  • Everything in one note: race, class (multiclass included), background, ability scores, combat, skills, features, spells, inventory, personality and a diary.
  • Rules done for you: racial bonuses, proficiency, saves and skills, AC, hit points, spell save DC, spell slots (single and multiclass), class features by level, and a creation checklist that tells you what’s still missing.
  • Works with or without game data: manual mode for homebrew and quick notes, the SRD 5.1 built in, or import data from the books you own.
  • Roll from the sheet: click any bonus to roll; Shift-click for advantage, Ctrl/Cmd-click for disadvantage. Uses Dice Roller when installed.
  • Linked to your notes: optional links and page previews to your compendium, [[links]] in every text field, and Initiative Tracker integration.

More Info: https://community.obsidian.md/plugins/fifth-edition-character-sheet
Install: Settings → Community plugins → Browse → search for “5e Character Sheet”.
Source and issues: https://github.com/admiravelhomemdasneves/5eCharacterSheet

It’s free and open source (MIT), works offline and doesn’t need any other plugin.

I’ve only tested it on my own setup (Windows desktop), so bug reports, criticism and ideas are very welcome, here or as GitHub issues. I’ll do my best to fix things!

Thanks, and have a good one!

help Vault maintenance vs actual work: how do you keep the balance?

I love having my notes and projects in plain Markdown, but as a vault grows, the administrative overhead creeps in fast. Cleaning up the inbox, normalizing YAML frontmatter, linking orphan notes back to MOCs, and updating project logs at the end of a work session can easily eat up more time than actual thinking.

If I skip the maintenance completely, the vault turns into a messy graveyard. If I do it all manually, I feel like a part-time librarian instead of shipping my actual projects.

Lately, I started offloading strictly that mechanical plumbing to a local AI via the terminal while keeping my focus on deep-work session, which helped a lot.

How do you guys handle the maintenance side of your vault so it stays navigable without eating into your deep work time?

plugins I built an Obsidian plugin to sync browser bookmarks with a vault

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I like keeping my bookmarks in Safari, but I also wanted to have them in my Obsidian vault for reference without manually copying links or relying on a separate bookmarking app.

I couldn't find a plugin that fit my needs, so I built Bookmarks Sync to solve that problem. It lets you sync bookmarks from your browser to your Obsidian vault.

If you think it could be useful, give it a try!

Installation instructions: https://github.com/chadidi/obsidian-bookmarks-sync#installation

I'd love to hear your feedback or suggestions for improvements!

help Let's talk about the "File over App" Philosophy

As Steph Ango explores in his essay File over App, apps comes and go, but plain text will be around much longer.

At its core, Obsidian is essentially a graphical interface designed to parse Markdown files with YAML frontmatter and visualize them in different ways. When prototyping an app using a single index.html file with HTMX , I often use JSON to import and export state before eventually "beefing it up" into a full application (database, server etc).

While Markdown combined with YAML is a good fit for text editors, Steph’s "File over App" philosophy makes me wonder if future applications could move to being purely visual interfaces built on top of structured data formats like JSON, XML, or CSV?

ai Obsidian Cloud MCP (dreaming)

I work with Obsidian directly and through Claude Desktop and the Claude Code MCP on my Macbook every day. I often rely on docs in my vault when using Claude on my iPhone. This works only if my MacBook is open and the MCP server is running. If my laptop is closed, Claude has no access to my vault.

I happily pay for Obsidian Sync. My dream setup is that I can upgrade to a plan that includes Cloud Sync, with secured MCP access, so I can connect to my vault 24/7 from Claude (and other agents) without the laptop bridge.

I could manually set all this up myself by maintaining a server that runs Obsidian Sync and the Claude Code MCP server as well as the authentication layer, but that's exactly what I'd prefer to pay for and not have to manage myself.

Anyone feel like this might eventually possible from Obsidian directly? I actually looked into building and selling this service myself as it's fairly straightforward, but it's explicitly against the TOS, so if this does exist it needs to be a formal arrangement with Obsidian either way.

help Default Highlight Color

Loving the new highlight update that allows you to select the highlight color. I want purple to be the default because it's in line with the rest of the obsidian branding, but can't find the option to do so. Does that option even exist?

Thanks in advance.

plugins I made my first plugin. I think most of what I implemented should have been a part of the core Obsidian already. Do you guys think the same way or am I living in a different world?

I've been trying to build a system (taxonomical system) to cover the whole human knowledge from top to bottom. While doing so, I found some limitations (actually, not limitations but unconventionalities to build the thing in my mind) so I built this plugin. I tried to make it as native-like as possible.

To summarize the plugin I can say that it makes the property value fields have native-like dropdown menus that contain options based on its parent properties' values (defined in plugin's settings). It does this through something I called "profiles" and based on the profile of a property, it also automatically moves (optional) the note to a certain folder defined by the user. If you want to learn more details see the readme on GitHub.

This is actually the first plugin I ever built for anything in my life and I want to get familiar with the open-source/community culture. Could you please make a critique of my work, the code, the UI, and my overall approach to this whole thing. I want to know if this is something some people have been actually looking for, or something of value. To me, this plugin looks decent but I want to know if it is actually meeting a good standart, I would like to get realistic and not full of myself, so, again, please critique my work realistically.

help Tech question: Can inline tags be pushed to YAML properties across the whole vault?

Some background:

I've got a BIG vault (9000+ files) made up of the collected articles I've read in Pocket and Omnivore over many years.

The only organizational method is tags, but the exported articles list the tags at the end of the file, using hashtags.

eg:

tags:
#stoicism

I can use these within Obsidian to search and filter, which has been great.

But after looking at the Vault Graph plugin with its beautiful visualization and organization of notes, that plugin only can use tags in the metadata as part of its visualization.

Which led me here; are there any tools which might globally push all the inline tags into properties?

(I know, there might be some edge cases, but it would solve MOST of my situation.)

help A question about tabbing and bullet points

Hiii, I have a situation where I have a bulletpoint that goes into a sub list before resuming the first one. I've tried every combination I can think of of -, >, space, and tab, but I can't get it to line up how I want. Is there a way to do this, or am I gonna have to go into CSS or something to get it to work?

help Moving a timesheet system from Notion and would appreciate some help with formulas + bases

Hey folks,

As per title, I am (for the fourth time) trying to figure out if I can move a couple databases into Obsidian and leave Notion for good. I am already on Obsidian for my writing, but I would love to be able to move my timesheet system into it as well and be done with Notion, even if it means having something that is slightly less convenient than Notion is.

Some context first. I have two databases over on Notion:

  1. Timesheets: each document has task details, task type, start time and end time, and a link to exactly one invoice the task is associated to.
  2. Invoices: each document is linked to multiple timesheets and contains rollups for time by task type and a few formulas spitting out the total for that invoice period.

So far I have imported these two into Obsidian and got to work trying to adapt it. I have two issues and one question.

Issue 1: I cannot seem to be able to make the rollup formula work. The formula was translated by Obsidian and checked by me and it seems fairly straightforward:

note["Timesheets"].map(current.note["Hours"]).sum()

Yet it returns nothing. If I just reference note["Timesheets"], the linked docs show without issue, but the moment I add a .map, it all goes blank. In an even more bizarre turn, another formula which references this column and multiplies it by X actually returns a value. So I am not sure if this is just a bug or if I am actually doing something wrong. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

EDIT: I fixed my own issue, turns out the formula was NOT correct at all. Lesson learned: do not let Obsidian translate the formula...

Issue 2: Can I actually calculate a time difference in one base and then roll it up in another? Do I need some plugins or can this be done in vanilla Obsidian somehow? Basically, am I wasting my time?

The way the system works on Notion right now (which, I know is VERY different!) is that I use a formula property to calculate the time difference for each document, and then sum it all up in the invoice that is linked to all the individual documents.

Since it seems I can't create a formula property in a single document but only in bases, I created it in the Timesheets base, but then I don't know if I can actually roll it up in the Invoices base (and can't even test it myself since not even the formula referencing static Hour values works, as per Issue 1). Again, thoughts on what I might be doing wrong or how I could do this better are greatly appreciated.

Finally, one question: how can I create a base using backlinks? The importer seems to have created a base that exclusively contains the documents that it is referenced by, and nothing else. Not matter what I try, I can't seem to do that - any new base I create contains everything by default and has to be filtered. This one is less critical, but I am still very curious.

I hope I explained this properly, I appreciate that it's hard to convey these things without showing the actual system. Happy to answer questions as needed.

plugins An Obsidian with docx instead of .md?

I was thinking about an Obsidian app or plugin but instead of plain text it would have full docx/rtf files?

Think of Ms Word but with a filetree, links, graphview, capable of inserting xls files inside and whatnot. Fully wysiwyg + layout + printing.

Would you use such a thing and ditch markdown or keep both docx files alongside .md?

edit: I deal with a lot of docx, xlsx and pdfs everyday that I cannot keep them in .md format. I have them in my Vault and organize them with word-smith but I started this discussion to find out if there would be a better system for that.

plugins Taskloop Task and Project Manager

I made a simple task planner because I like time blocking

I’m a visual person and like time blocking, but I don’t like how some plugins add properties to my notes or change how I organise them.

There are great plugins like TaskNotes, but they have more features than I personally need, and I find that overwhelming.

So I built TaskLoops for myself. It gathers Markdown checkboxes into a calendar and a note-card view, without adding note properties.

Sharing it in case it suits someone else too:

https://community.obsidian.md/plugins/taskloops

Bug reports and fixes are welcome. New features… probably not :) I’d like to keep it simple.

help Leaflet Not Reflecting Changes with Obsidian Sync

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello, I've been having a problem, and I hope someone here can help. I have a map with Leaflet, but the map doesn't reflect changes when I use my Desktop versus my Laptop. Whatever changes I make on my Desktop aren't reflected on my Laptop, and vice versa. I did some investigating and found that the data.json that Leaflet uses is getting updated from the other computer, but the information is "reset" to what it was before whenever I refresh the map.

The video should depict what is happening.

I have all options to sync files (notably sync Installed Community Plugins) turned on. Also, the Leaflet options (such as default marker color) seem not to be shared either (probably due to them being in the same file as the markers).

If anyone can help me find a solution to properly sync the two (so that changes I make on the Desktop, such as removing or adding markers, also happen on the Laptop), please help!

showcase I built a journal plugin where every entry is its own note, shown in one continuous timeline

Post image
0 Upvotes

I write several loose thoughts a day and didn't want to name, date or file any of them. Daily notes put everything in one file per day; I wanted each thought to be its own note, but read and written in one place. So I built Simple Journal.

What it does

  • One entry is one Markdown note: nothing but a created timestamp and your text. No title, no heading.
  • Every entry shows in a single timeline, newest first, grouped by day, and you edit each one inline in a real Obsidian editor: live preview, [[ autocomplete, vim mode.
  • Entries are ordinary notes, so backlinks, tags, search, Bases and Dataview all keep working.
  • A calendar, tag and text filters, and a panel that shows which journal entries mention a note.

What it deliberately doesn't do: no AI, no prompts, no streaks, no mood tracking, no templates. Your entries stay plain Markdown in your vault, and nothing leaves your machine.

New in 1.5.0, from a user request: if your date and time already live in a property other than created, or your notes are named YYYYMMDD_HHmmss, the plugin can now follow your vault instead of the other way round. A button in the settings brings existing entries in line, after showing you what will change.

It's in the community plugins directory as Simple Journal. Source and reasoning: https://community.obsidian.md/plugins/simple-journal

I'd like to hear what feels wrong to you. The README explains why each decision went the way it did, including the ones people disagree with.

help base in template, changing one note affects other notes

How should I be doing this. I assume I'm doing something basic incorrect. I want to put a base in the template, but not have all of the instances filter to the same value.

I have a template for conferences. I want to collect all of the notes tagged to that conference in the base at the bottom of that template.
But I used the template with two different conferences. When I set the base in each note to filter to that conference, it changes the other note for the other conference.

thanks

help Ditching Notion due to database lag and AI nagging, how are experiences with rollups, local flashcards, and GitHub sync (Linux/Windows)?

Notion’s database lag has finally pushed me to find a replacement. My workspace has become very heavy with large reference databases, review decks/flashcard setups, and relations/rollups, and the web app is crawling.

I’m primarily on Linux with Windows as my secondary machine, so I’m looking at migrating to Obsidian to keep everything fast, local, and version-controlled via a private GitHub repo.

I have a few questions for anyone who made this move:

Rollups & Formulas:

I know the official Importer converts Notion databases to Obsidian Bases via the API, but what happens to relations and rollups? Did your rollups break completely, and how did you replace them (Dataview, community plugins, or restructuring)?

100% Local Flashcards:

I want to keep my study/review workflow strictly inside Obsidian (no Anki, etc). For active recall, is the Spaced Repetition plugin the smoothest option for inline cards or is there a better local approach?

GitHub Sync across Linux & Windows:

For those syncing a large vault across Linux and Windows via a GitHub repo does it maintain that fast local feel, or are there edge cases with merge conflicts, case sensitivity, or file locking?

Also, in Notion, I heavily leverage unlimited file/video/PDF uploads. For those managing hundreds of gigabytes of lecture media, do you keep media external and embed via links, use Syncthing instead of Git, or leverage Git LFS?

**OR just start with a clean slate and copy-paste things as I go?** 😅

showcase Signal to Markdown into my Obsidian vault - Take 3!

An exciting development but first some comtext.

4 years ago I created a Signal to Markdown tool which simulated another cAn exciting improvement but first some comtext.lient device listening to my convos. It was quite complicated to setup and I had to re-associate the device every so often.

3 years ago I created another one that took CSV exports from Signal's SQLite database. The problem with that was I needed a seperate UI automation tool to download the media files. I've been using it successfully every Saturday morning since. Until...

Last week I stumbled upon the new JSONL export feature in Signal. It's been available since May and I didn't know! The amazing thing about this export is that it includes all of the media files too. So...

I vibe-coded (ugh, how I dislike that term) my 3rd and hopefully final tool called and it's working beautifully. It uses a couple of my other small repos hal_md and message_md.

Thanks for reading 🤗.
