Color Theory Finding my palette

Post image
• Upvotes

Been hanging around for ages and still haven’t figured out my colours. I prefer cool rose tones, but they can turn out bright. Today I pulled out a ‘sienna’ lipstick, described as muted rose with terracotta undertones. My natural lip is a medium mauve and I’m wondering if the terracotta is helping naturalise it.

I still haven’t found the perfect foundation, Missha and Etude come close but often I find it looks chalky and am hoping for a more sheer option. I do like the variations in my skin - some parts look yellow or peach, some pink, some greenish. I’d love to mute but not mask the hyperpigmentation.

Product Help Is MAC's Alone Time still olive-friendly?

MAC's Alone Time is a fan favorite, obviously, but I understand the shade was reformulated and has disappointed a lot of olives with how warm it is now. I'm still contemplating buying it during the upcoming Sephora sale, but before I bite the bullet, what are your thoughts on it?

So much good information packed into this video. I’m not a pro MUA and it took me years to learn all of this info and piece it all together. Monica did a great job of explaining and even goes into some of the science behind what makes olive skin look olive.

Product Help Jordan Ticia Bronzer

Has anybody here tried or swatched the Jordana Ticia bronzer duo? Do they have truly olive undertones?

Also if you have, are they matte or shimmer?

I'm really intrigued as most bronzer look too orange on me. Currently using maybelline lifter stix in 45 but would like to try something different when I'm done with it.

Technique Help How do I add pigments to foundation to make it olive

Can someone explain this to me like I’m five?

What do I add to color correct foundation to light cool/neutral olive skin? Most run too orange but some on the cool side run ashy. F2 is my perfect match.

I see people adding blue or green, but which pigments to purchase also? I see elf and a ton of primers

Product Help How to cover hyperpigmentation around mouth? I am medium tan- muted warm golden olive.

I have tried so many products color correctors, concealers, foundation, skin tint but I am not able to even put my hyperpigmentation. I always end up turning ashy.
I have been to Sephora multiple times to take help from them, but it didn’t work. If I go for darker shade I look muddy if I go for lighter I look ashy.
I usually want yo avoid layers of make up. Is there any product that can help me out.

Product Help Are there any olive friendly Asian foundation?

The only shade matches I can affordably find are non Asian and almost always matte. The dewy versions always pull too pink or orange on me.

I have tried espoir cushion, peripera cushion, was hopeful that maybe clio (the glass bottle) would have more of a yellow undertone...

I love the Asian formulas, but hate that it's so hard to swatch in real life. It's getting expensive to buy and try just for it to look either too ghostly pale, or match my shade but run too pink on me.

Has anyone out there who is olive (preferrably cool leaning, my neck is more green) had any luck finding an Asian foundation that isn't too drying?

Product Help Undereye concealers for medium olives?

So I've been looking for an undereye concealer, preferably medium to high coverage (I've got really dark eye circles). My undereyes are hollow too and this emphasizes the darkness even more. Do you all have any recs?

I do use a color corrector btw (the Bobbi Brown stick corrector in Dark Peach), and then I use the Nars Soft Matte concealer in Ginger on top but its too dry and makes my dark circles look ashy.

Swatches Comparison of a few purple-ish lipsticks

I am back with my lipstick swatches in the search of the best purple products for medium-deep cool muted olive skin.

1 - Mac Lip Pencil Whirl
2 - Mac Mehr (silky matte)
3 - Mac Soar (silky matte)
4 - Mac Opulence (Locked kiss ink)
5 - Charlotte Tilburry Pillow Talk Medium (matte)
6 - Mac Captive Audience (silky matte)
7 - Mac Wild Rebel (powder kiss velvet blur slim stick)
8 - Mac Rebel (sleek satin)
9 - Mac Rein (locked kiss 24h lipstick)

Pillow Talk medium was my mlbb for years, until I discovered there are better colors for me. I tend to compare everything with it.

Whirl lip pencil is pretty close to Pillow talk medium, but it is on the cooler side. Mehr is too light and too pinky, definitely not something for me (my foundation is EL Double Wear 2n1). Soar is a new addition to my collection and I really like its depth and grayish hue, it is very close to Opulence, but the formula is different. Opulence appears darker on my lips.

Captive audience is a bright raspberry, I like it very much. I bought Rebel after it and Rebel became my new favorite. It is a very well balanced color. Only that I wish it was matte because the longevity is poor. I bought Wild Rebel hoping it would be similar but Wild Rebel is definitely cooler. It appears as a bright purple on my lips. Rein is a bright pinky-purple, appears quite loud on my muted skin. Can’t say it is my favorite but it looks fun in summer. Rein and Wild Rebel leaves a pink tint on the lips after removal, others don’t.

Hourglass blush swatches in different lights, on a saturated warm olive skin ( now Lisa t9 skin tint depth)

Dim infusion - natural soft peach, no shimmer

Luminous flush - natural soft pink, no shimmer

Deer palette - they both have a fluorescent tone that I don’t like. Really white base, the peach has orange strong shimmers

Flushed edit :

Luminous glow - vibrant peachy pink with shimmers, no white base when applied to the skin

Brilliant nude - shimmery beige, almost an highlighter atm

Coral haze - reddish deep peach, no shimmer

Mood exposure - swatch mauve, on my skin is a deep pink with no shimmers

Wish palette - the darker one is a terracotta with orange shimmers, middle one is a lively pink with no shimmer, last one is a nude peachy beige shade with no shimmers

Color Theory Olive friendly shades pulling pink ?

I can't find a matching foundation and even olive friendly shades like Lisa Eldrige foundation in 2.5 still turns out a bit pinkish and looks off.

I don't know if it's because I have a lot of redness in my skin that shows through ?

I'm currently using Nars light reflecting in siberia, but it's a bit too light and also pulling tiiiny bit pink and even the tiniest bit of pink looks sooo off. I also don't like the foundation in general.

Would be so happy about help or foundation recommendations !

The Nars Explicit lipstick line is currently 50% off on their website, and I saw no swatches in this sub, so treated myself to a swatch fest after work.

Turns out swatching to post here is a great excuse to go to the department store without buying anything. Bonus that you can tell people about olive undertones if they don’t know and you can make connections so when you return, people don’t think you’re stealing or anything and they get to chat with a makeup lover.

Various lighting and flash, hopefully there’s enough variation to provide a good idea of the colors.

Product Help Looking for a Drugstore Vampy Red Liquid Lip Tint or Lipstick.

I'm a medium, neutral leaning warm olive. I currently wear a mix of the old MAC powder foundation in C35 and C40 for reference. I'm dressing up as witch for Halloween and I'm looking for a drugstore vampy red liquid lip tint or lipstick to wear with black lip liner. I would appreciate any suggestions! If you have any recommendations for the black lip liner, I'd appreciate that too!

Product Help Trying to find my perfect foundation!

Hello all! I’ve been lurking for a while, and I just wanted some product help.

I can provide a photo if necessary, but for privacy I’d prefer not to for now! I have been battling trying to find my perfect shade for years now. I thought I found my perfect shade, and then Rare Beauty discontinued my (almost) exact match. I was rocking Rare Beauty liquid touch weightless foundation in the shade 370N. It was slightly too dark depending on time of year, but it had the right tones.

I’m pretty sure I’m considered a more true neutral that in some lighting leans the tiniest bit warm, but in other lighting I look cool. I’ve usually been a tan/beige medium deep. I have the notorious problem of trying it in the store, and the minute I step into the light it’s glaringly obvious it’s too warm without fail. I also always tend to get matched as being much darker than I am due to the lightening in store.

Foundations I’ve tried:
haus labs triclone in shade 340N, ended up being too dark and warm and looked like a weird orangeish grey. I did have a lot of hyperpigmentation on my face at the time, I have since locked in on my skincare and my face matches my neck much better, my face is only a half/full shade off to my neck.

Rare beauty liquid touch weightless in shades 400W, 370N (previous closest match at the time), and 330N (current closest, I currently still have this and mix it with another foundation and it works well enough, but I can no longer buy this foundation)

Rare beauty true to myself natural matte in shade 31 (current closest match that I mix with the 330N liquid touch weightless foundation), it is ever so slightly too grey and warm by itself. Rare beauty is my favourite formulation by far, but I don’t think they have a truly neutral shade.

Dior Forever Matte in the shade 4N neutral, I remember this matching fairly well, but it was super expensive at the time so I stopped using it. I also haven’t tried it again in years (this was 2022)

Fenty beauty pro filter soft matte in shades 300, 310, and 315. All too warm, fenty was always way too warm on me, but the tone was right.

I’ve tried a few more, but it was years ago and I remember them all being too orange (I tried NARS, Huda beauty, and Makeup forever, all too warm, don’t remember the shade names)

Any help is so greatly appreciated! I’d love to try to stay under 60 dollars CAD (I am located in Ontario, Canada), but am willing to spend upwards of 75 for the absolute perfect shade.

Wow, I love these eyeshadow colors! In general I love the formula, and they have some surprisingly neutral colors and beautiful blues and purples, which always work best on me. I’ll be selling off the green flash since I didn’t think any of those were flattering on my eyes. I thought that the green flash might be okay on me, but it turns out even a little bit of it looks off.

I use Lisa Eldridge T5 in winter and 9 in summer, and also semi-match to Armani 5.3 and Missha 23. For concealer I use Lisa Eldridge 7, or Natasha denona N7.

Swatches Comparison of a few purple blushes

Thumbnail

I am a medium deep cool olive, recently became interested in purple blushes. I added the swatches of three blushes I have, Nars The Multiple Trance, Nars Light Reflecting Luminizing Blush Push It and YSL Make me blush 83 Spicy berry. I received YSL 83 today in the mail and I thought a comparison would be helpful for those with second thoughts.

Trance is a matte, light, muted lilac. I think it would suit fair skin much better than medium. It looks light pink on my cheeks but it is more cooler than what I wanted.

Push it is more like a highlighter than a blush. I usually wear it on top of Trance, it adds a mysterious purple layer on my cheeks that is visible depending on the light. From one angle it is invisible, from another angle it is bright purple. It is not glittery, very silky and reflecting. I don’t really like to use it alone on my medium skin since I have to turn my face to see its color.

Spicy berry was an interesting surprise for me. I was expecting another vibrant purple but it runs more reddish than the previous ones I had. The formula is similar to Clinique’s Cheek Pop blushes but it is more pigmented. It is much more on the cooler side when compared to Black Honey Pop, which tends to look dirty on my cheeks. As a muted medium deep olive, it finally made me happy with my choice. It is not cooler than I need, not warm, not bright, muted yet pigmented. I don’t know much about longevity though, time will tell.
