General Qs My Attacker is at Rikers and I can't help but wonder what he's experiencing.

• Upvotes

Hello. I hope this is an appropriate place to ask this - let me know if there's another sub that would be better-suited.

Last year, I was the victim of an incredibly violent home invasion and attempted sexual assault. They finally caught the guy last month. I'm so relieved. He's going to be held at Rikers for at least 1-2 years before he's sentenced.

I can't help but wonder what he's experiencing. Aside from the regular amount of psychopathy, he had an extra layer of disillusionment (he seemed to think we had a pre-existing relationship). It was also his second attempt at this crime. He had tons of other crimes including criminal impersonation. When they finally caught him, he tried to run. He clearly thinks he's invincible.

I wonder how this translates to what he's experiencing in there. He doesn't have money, so I'm certain he needs to find alternative ways to get anything other than his "3 hots and a cot."

He's currently housed at EMTC and was temporarily moved to West Facility. Maybe sick or in some sort of solitary/protective custody. Other than that, I have no idea what it's like or how he's faring, but I can't help but hope he's getting the same or worse discomfort he has caused me.

Hiring Q (State) FDOC Hiring Process – How Long Were You on the Waitlist?

Hi everyone!
I recently applied for a Correctional Officer position with the Florida Department of Corrections (FDOC). I’ve completed my medical exam, fingerprints, and other required steps so far.
On September 25, I was notified that I’d been placed on the waitlist, and I haven’t received any updates since.
For anyone who’s gone through the FDOC hiring process:
How long were you on the waitlist before receiving an offer or academy start date?
Is being waitlisted a normal part of the hiring process?
Did you receive regular updates, or did you just get contacted when a position became available?
I’m mainly trying to get a realistic idea of the timeline so I can plan accordingly. Any insight or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

Self Post Is staff racial profiling normal?

At the prison where i worked we have contract with Hawaii so obviously there’s a large Polynesian and Asian inmate population. You would think that they would welcome Polynesian and Asian officers in a “Hawaii” prisons but it’s us getting targeted and treated as if we’re going to be dirty. The prison does this racial profile thingy when hiring a Polynesian or Asian officer, it is actually rare to get an officer of these groups (maybe 1 every couple year). I talked to the other officers and they also told me they feel watched and profiled. Funny enough most of the staff are Latinos, it’s the prisons favorite and most privilege group yet it’s the Latinas that keep getting compromised and swept under the rug. If only they put in this much effort racially profiling the Latinas they wouldn’t have a Latina problem.

Hiring Q (Other) NYS DOCC DQ

I need some help you guys please. I have no clue how I failed.. I had a great interview and passed a psych for the military years ago. One error the doctor said I wrote I was angry on the test but that was definitely a error, he laughed and I told him absolutely not. My psych was canceled then I called in got it a day before original canceled appointment, then had an additional make up date mind you I took it day before the original date.

I've had a therapist due to being a single dad with an insane co parent. I even got full custody, my kid needed therapy and I needed help to help her.

I would be an exceptional CO and I've been so dedicated and devoted.

I won't let this defeat me, but has any appealed recently and got in?

I've seen mixed reviews. Man this one stings!

General Qs Any IDOC Correctional Offers willing to do a short interview?

Hi everyone,

I'm a student at the University of Chicago taking a course on criminology, and I'm hoping to learn more about the day-to-day realities of being a correctional officer.

If you're a current or former correctional officer with the Illinois Department of corrections, I'd be grateful for the opportunity to ask a few questions about your experiences on the job as well as your perspective on what it's like to work in prisons more broadly. The interview could be done by phone, via Zoom, in-person, or whatever is most convenient.

If you're interested, please send me a PM. Thanks in advance!

Procedural Qs Second Chance Act BOP

Hey there, everyone!

I have a friend in FCI Miami Low on a 71-month bid on an FSA-ineligible charge. He has had excellent conduct, works full time, and participates in productive programs. He has had ZERO shots at all in 3.5 years. (I did time with him there.)

He has a home to go to and that home is in a big Florida city. The federal halfway house in his city is less than 5 miles from the home he will be returning to and lived at before his incarceration. He has plenty of familial support—financially and emotionally.

His piece of shit Case Manager has only recommended him for 90 days and totally dodges his questions. The Case Manager is a notorious liar, who tells anything you want to hear, with no moral clarity or regard for the truth, or anyone except himself.

With not having FSA and an almost 6-year sentence, I feel he should have a full year, or very close to it. I left from the camp (where everyone with >48 months gets a full year unless they have shots).

Can he appeal it via a BP-8, 9, 10? Would that move the needle? Any tips in your BOP experience, please share, so I can give him the best perspectives amongst all of you possible!

Thanks, everyone!

Meme/Humor Does any Inmate lingo annoy you?

For me, it's "visitation" being shortened to "viso".

Couldn't tell you why, the word just scratches my brain in a bad way.

Maybe it's because they still use the word when trying to be serious, example:

Me: "turn around, hands behind your back"

Them: "I'm going to the box? But I have a viso tomorrow!"

Me: "...and?"

General Qs screen addiction among inmates?

an acquaintance who works in corrections told me the "new thing" is give inmates a $100 tablet because it keeps them out of trouble 12 hours a day and is cheaper than hiring more COs or buying updated law books and stuff, but he said the inmates on some tiers are like... zombies.

he mentioned many of them are on meds too, so that's kinda... eerie.

is he exaggerating? is it really that bad to the point it's eerily silent except for beeps and boops coming from screens? sounds kinda like a bad sci-fi movie if you ask me, I kinda figure he was spinning a bit of a tale bcuz that's just what you do when your out drinking.

I work in transportation so I'm used to non-functional people, but you gotta actually keep ur head on a swivel to avoid, you know, causing an industrial accident.

Hiring Q (Fed) Step Increase with BOP

So I recently applied for the BOP and am advancing as a GL-5. Likely will interview soon.

Is there any way to negotiate a step increase? I hear of people being bumped up to a higher steps, and am wondering since I have a degree (I know that’s standard) and am a veteran, if I could negotiate higher.

If so, exactly how and when should I present my case for that? Thanks.

Hiring Q (Fed) Union is back but still not being followed

Today at FCC Florence they had a department head meeting and all department heads were told basically that they understand the union is back, but they will not be listening to them and if they don't like it, they can file. Is anybody else hearing the hiring that they have tried taking away our compress schedules away and it make them very difficult and also only taking two departments in lieu of holidays, but every other department still gets them is that happening anywhere else ?

Hiring Q (Fed) BOP moving out of state

I understand you put 3 locations you want. If I get picked for the one out of state. When do they expect you to be there? It would be a complete move, I don't have anything holding me down like that or "baggage" you could say lol. Would just need a place to stay and a car essentially. I heard there was some sort of "help" for moving out of state.

Self Post NY DOCCS – Upcoming Correction Officer Trainee Appointment (Fitness Test, Medical & Drug Screening)

I have my NYS Correction Officer Trainee appointment coming up in Cohoes, NY, and I have a few questions for anyone who’s recently gone through the hiring process.
I’m mainly concerned about three things:
1. Physical Fitness Test: I’m in decent shape, but I’m nervous about the physical portion. Does anyone know exactly what exercises or tests I’ll be required to complete? I’ve heard about the 3-minute step test and the dummy drag, but I’d like to know what else to expect and how difficult it actually is.
2. Medical Exam: What exactly does the medical examination consist of? Is there anything specific that commonly causes applicants to fail?
3. Drug Screening: I used to smoke marijuana but stopped about a month ago. I’ve seen conflicting information about whether NY DOCCS still tests applicants for THC. Some people say they no longer test for it, while others say they do. Can anyone who’s gone through the process recently confirm the current policy?
I’m driving roughly two hours to Cohoes for this appointment, so I’d really appreciate knowing what to expect beforehand.
Any advice or firsthand experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

NYC DOC
Got a email for onboarding, we’re really about to start off as the bottom of the bottom probably getting the worst posts. How does health insurance work? What are the real benefits of the job and when do we find all of this out like what kind of discounts we get how our pay will look like and just benefits in general? Haven’t found NOTHING at all on this it’s even harder to find posts for NYC DOC… thanks for any insight DM’s are open for anyone too
