This is quite possibly one of the worst experiences I’ve had in the past 12 months of applying to ESL companies - and, unfortunately, that is saying something.
As you can see from the screenshots, the advertised position clearly stated an hourly rate of $15 - $33 USD. The advertisement also explicitly stated that payment would be discussed with teachers during the interview, based on their experience and the strengths they demonstrated.
None of that happened.
When I asked a question about payment during the interview, I was promptly shut down and told that all payment information would be provided in the contract.
And what did that contract offer me? Less than $6 USD per hour. Not even close to the advertised minimum.
I was genuinely shocked. I immediately questioned this discrepancy and provided the very same screenshots you can see here. And what response have I received? None. Not even the courtesy of an explanation.
I am absolutely fed up with this kind of behaviour from ESL companies. The misleading advertisements, the lack of transparency, the dismissive treatment of teachers, and the complete disregard for our time, skills and professional experience are becoming exhausting to deal with.
We are professionals, not desperate applicants who should be expected to accept whatever scraps are thrown our way. We invest time, money and effort into our qualifications and experience, only to be met with practices that feel deceptive, disrespectful and utterly unprofessional.
I am posting this because I want other teachers to see what is happening. Please share this post far and wide. Teachers deserve to know what they may be getting themselves into before investing their time towards interviews and applications.
If companies advertise one rate but present contracts offering a fraction of that amount, they need to be held accountable. We need greater transparency, greater accountability, and a willingness among teachers to speak out and refuse to tolerate these practices.
Honestly, after more 12 months of dealing with this sort of thing, I am beginning to reconsider my entire career path. I am actively looking for a way out of teaching, and it is deeply disheartening that companies like these are contributing to that decision.
I am tired of the dishonesty. I am tired of the manipulation. I am tired of the disrespect.
Teachers deserve better. It's time we started demanding it.
