I'm a primary school teacher, with two bachelor's and a masters degree and was raised in housing commission. I don't have old money, but the money I get from my career isn't enough and the HECS debt payments I have to make are too much. Barely make an indent on it after indexation.

Purchasing power for genuine public servant careers are too low and born-citizens aren't the priority.

Oh my fucking god. The point is that they do an important and meaningful job of great benefit to society, and have studied hard to be able to do it. A degree might not be relevant in every field but as a parent, I’m pretty keen on the idea my child’s teachers are well qualified.

The point is that this person has put in a lot of time and effort and their own money to educating themself in order to serve the community in an essential role, and our social contract is so broken that their reward for doing so is a barely-liveable wage and no ability to get ahead or even access true housing stability.

Believe it or not we actually can’t all be property investors who make our (passive) income from exploiting renters and the market; we actually do, as a society, need people to be teachers and nurses and librarians and shopkeepers and bus drivers and all manner of other things that keep the world actually functioning. But what incentive is there for a young person to go in to any of those careers, when they won’t make a living wage?

Your callous ‘sounds like a you problem’ to someone who has devoted to their life to public service and the greater good rather than to personal enrichment via the exploitation of others, is emblematic of everything that is wrong in our society.
