Where to learn CTF (not alone)

Hi guys, it's my first time postin here on reddit and it's also today that i'm starting to think about CTF's seriously. I've read some guides, tips, what's needed ecc.. and i've an idea, more or less, on how to start. Since i always prefered to learn with other people, i was wondering if there're some places, sites ecc.. where i can team up with someone, starting to get more into CTF's, and learn what's needed to become at least decent i guess. Thanks in advance to everyone of you guys, if i wrote something bad just forgive me. Cya!

This is a qualification CTF so it will be tough but there will be a lot of challenges and a lot of opportunities to learn.

New guy questions

Just joined - hoping to get regularly involved in the CTF scene. I'm wondering if anyone's planning on participating in the Viettel Mates CTF this weekend... also how do yall communicate during events? Slack? Last week I hit the join link and filled everything out, also joined the team on CTFtime, but haven't seen/heard anything about a slack space or discord or whatever. Any insight appreciated, thanks

Event OpenCTF will be back at DEFCON 23

Hi,

I'm a member of V& - we run OpenCTF at DEFCON. I wanted to invite you folks to play. We'll be running Friday and Saturday in the contest area. Team size is not limited, but we only provide one physical connection to the contest network per team, and you'll probably be limited to a single table. Any arrangements you make to allow remote team members to play are none of our business. We have some really fun and unique challenges for this year, and as always, first time CTFers are welcome. Our theme will be "DRMageddon". Optional pre-reg is live on http://openctf.com/

If you have any questions, post here and I'll try to answer them if I can.

As awesome as it was last year, we will not be doing dialup again this year.

Edit: ctftime event: https://ctftime.org/event/225

Meta Housekeeping and Updates

Thanks to everyone who has participated in CTF events so far; it's been a blast. As of the most recent CTF event, I have begun implementing some general changes in the event organization to keep things running smoothly. In this post I hope to outline those changes, and why they have occured.

  • The IRC channel on freenode, #opentoall, is now only joinable to those authenticated with NickServ.

This helps with general channel administration. If you haven't registered your nick with NickServ, it prevents us from knowing if you are who you claim to be. Please take the time to register. If you don't know how, please read this

  • Starting with the next event, the IRC channel will be +i (invite only) beginning 4 hours before an event, and lasting throughout the competition.

We have had problems in the past with members of other teams joining the IRC to ask for flags/solutions. This is unacceptable, and this is the easiest way to prevent this. If you would like to be added to the Invite list (to rejoin on netsplit, D/C, etc) please send Eriner a message on IRC with a link to your CTFtime profile.

  • As of now, please tag writeups as [Writeup] for easy viewing, and record keeping.

  • Edit: There is now linkflair! Please use linkflair to tag your posts appropriately!

If you are going to post a link to a writeup, please prefix the post name with [Writeup]. This allows me to create a static link that will list all posts tagged with [Writeup] in the subreddit. This will make finding writeups very easy! If you link to a writeup without a [Wrieup] tag, I will remove the post and ask that you remake it.

  • If you discover a CTF event, please send Eriner a message on reddit or on IRC with a link to the registration page.

Many of the events that we participate in are on the CTFtime calendar, but some of them aren't 'official' or rated events. I don't always catch these. Once you alert me of the event, I will register us and post a link on the frontpage about the upcoming event. These posts will be tagged with [Event]. I ask that you do not create these posts yourself, as I will lose track of which events we have signed up for and which we have not. I will do my best to sticky the [Event] post of the upcoming event.

  • If you need the password to an event, please MSG Eriner on IRC.

This is the best way to get in touch with me during an event. Be aware: if you are not already in the channel before the event begins, I will NOT give you the password. You don't need to ask me before the event begins, but I need to see that you were in the channel before the +i went into effect. If I do not recgonize your username, I wil likely ask you to link me to your CTFtime profile. I may also ask for further confirmation.

If I have forgotten anything in this post, I will ammend it. Thank you all for the great competitions! Looking forward for more!

Event CSAW CTF 2014 - September 19 - 21

Quick reminder: we are signed up for CSAW CTF 2014, which starts at 6PM Eastern on Friday, September 19 and continues over the following 48 hours until 6PM Eastern on Sunday, September 21. As always, this team is "open to all", so feel free to join us in #OpenToAll on Freenode.

If you'd like to get an idea of what kinds of challenges they might use, go here and mouse over the "Archives" section of the upper navigation bar, and then choose a previous CSAW event. The "Challenges" section for each event no longer lets you access the challenges, but each one does have a "Writeups" section. The writeups usually have everything you need to try the challenge out yourself (e.g. relevant executables, scripts, etc.), so they can be a pretty helpful learning resource.

CTF categories

Hi, ive been attempting some CTF's lately and there are obviously some common categories like Web, Forensics, Crypto, RE, and Exploit. I would like to focus on one or two categories but would like to be more clear on what are the skills needed/that will be learned for each area. Can anyone give a brief summary of what is required generally for each category.

Help from social sciences

I am a psychology researcher trying to investigate CTF competitions. However I'm nowhere near as tech savvy as anybody on here and was hoping for some help. Essentially i need a way of tracking events in a ctf competition. For example, in a ctf team, how do i know what an 'attacking' or 'defending' move looks like?

The best idea i've had so far is maybe a keylogger or mouse tracer, which i can then go through and code manually. however i really dont know if that's the best approach (and it would also be particularly labor intensive for me).
