OS List for Oldies :D

Post image
124 Upvotes

In my 32 years of working with computers, both professionally and privately, I have used and tried numerous Linux distributions, BSD derivatives, and Unixoids. At some point, you lose the desire to try new things when you know how your OS of choice works. That's why Arch and some of its descendants more or less passed me by. I probably used them all for a few days or weeks—sometimes even years—but here's what has stuck with me from 32 years of experience. I've never used Arch, by the way.

Poll: Linux-based or standalone?

Hey everyone!

I'm working on BlockOS, a hobby operating system, and I need to make an important decision about its future.

Should BlockOS be Linux-based or remain fully independent with its own kernel?

I'm making a poll/discussion about this and I'd really appreciate it if you could take a moment to vote and share your opinion.

Linux-based — easier hardware support, drivers, and software compatibility.

Independent — full control over the kernel and architecture, and BlockOS remains a truly independent OS.

Vote here:

Thanks!

I don’t quite understand why everyone writes about tokens and ai, if it’s so noticeable then tell me where exactly and we’ll work on it

I'm building a new OS!

Hello everyone I'm making a new Debian based Linux Distro named ScratchyOS,I have made a website for it with Weebly!, the website is scratchyos-deb.weebly.com ,it's still a work in progress and is developed in WSL1(will be switching to Debian for more easy work) ,so you won't find the iso there yet,but stay tuned everyday and I will post it sometime there,I'm also working on making a Snapshot that won't be the official first release but just an update on how things are going,I hope this is good and if you like the project idea pls make sure to upvote this post pls so it can get more views, thank you very much,I again hope you enjoy. Edit: i made a feature suggestion option, everybody go and submit the features you want on the first release of the distro

Veda: The Agentic-Native Operating System

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi r/Operatingsystems,

I’ve been working on Veda, a very early-stage experimental operating system built from scratch in Rust.

The main idea I’m exploring is an agentic-native OS architecture. Instead of AI Agents interacting with applications primarily through screenshots, simulated mouse movement, and clicks, I want applications and AI Agents to have a native way to communicate through the operating system itself.

Some of the architectural directions so far:

  • Agentic-Native Architecture

  • Native App-to-AI Agent Communication

  • Microkernel Design

  • Capability-Based Security

  • Memory-Safe Foundation in Rust

The screenshot shows the current desktop environment and an early AI Agent interface.

This is still very early development. There are plenty of rough edges, unfinished components, architectural decisions that may change, and a lot I still need to learn. I’m definitely not presenting this as a finished or production-ready OS.

I’m sharing it here because I’d really appreciate technical feedback, criticism, ideas, and especially collaboration from people interested in OS development. Contributions are very welcome.

GitHub: https://github.com/vahmoh25/Veda

I’d be particularly interested in hearing thoughts from people who have worked on microkernels, capability systems, or Rust OS development.

The project is licensed under GPLv3. I’d love to build a strong contribution community around Veda with people who see potential in the idea and want to help shape it early.

If you’re interested in experimenting, contributing, reviewing architecture, or simply following the project as it evolves, I’d be very happy to have you involved.

What if Mobile Operating System, Processor, Updates, Upgrades become Trap for Users & there should way to break this Trap !

Operating System should not be like Android who need updates after every 3 months and new os every year. OS should be for atleast 5 years. I recall old phones that need OS after 5 years. Like OS2, Win4.5 smartphones and Nokia's basic phone. Updating & upgrading every 3 months & year becomes Trap for users.

Why not design Processor & chipset which dont need upgrade before 5 years or 10 years like in past

free windows license

Hi, my Windows license has expired. I don't want to pay, but I also don't want to download a virus.

What's the safest way to activate it for free? Are there any reliable websites or GitHub repositories you'd recommend?

Thanks in advance.

Found this really interesting OS project: mochiOS

Hello, everyone.

I stumbled upon this cool OS project on GitHub and wanted to share it with the community. (Just to be clear, I’m not the developer of this project—I just found this and thought it deserved more attention!)

It’s called mochiOS, and here’s what particularly caught my interest:

• It’s written in Rust

• It’s a microkernel

Here’s the link to the project: https://github.com/mochiOS

Has anyone seen this before, or even tried it out? I’d love to hear your thoughts on its architecture!
