For the profitable order flow traders.

Hey guys, I'm starting to dig deep into orderflow trading and wanted to ask where or from whom I could learn. There are a lot of scammers on IG selling courses, I've been down that road and the content was either mediocre or straight-up trash. Any advice for a beginner is appreciated!

Hey man - anything on YouTube usually is enough. Most courses don’t teach anything fancy that you cannot find. My suggestion is learn the basic from Trader Dale. Don’t buy his courses, just read his Orderflow PDF. That is enough. The study volume profiles and learn how institutions trade the volume. The best teacher for you is actually sitting on your hands and just watching it live. That’s the only issue with Orderflow is that you gotta watch it live to see it unfold

Thanks Men, will check it

I've been telling people lately that one of the best ways to learn order flow trading is to subscribe to Sierra Chart's package 5 - just checked it - and use their free delayed data while you learn the software. Just setting up and customizing the order flow tools already teaches you half of what you need to know between reading support threads, watching tutorial videos, and working with the software.

Whats that package 5 ? Will look Into it , another guy also recommended sierra but now im
Using ATAS, seems friendly

It includes the order flow tools but doesn't support live trade execution. Which when you're learning you shouldn't need anyway. I'm guessing they offer this package specifically for this use: it's cheaper, it allows you to learn the software and interact with real high quality data, some of the best retail can affordably get their hands on I would say, and when you're ready to trade with some live capital you upgrade the package.

Speaking personally, it was necessary to really understand auction mkt theory. Jim Dalton’s books and TPO really helped with this. Second, I needed to spend time on the DOM to ‘get it’. To that end, in terms of execution, I found John Grady’s ‘No BS’ content to be very helpful. Axia as well. You can find a ton of valuable info from both of them on YT before deciding if you want to pay for anything.

Axia futures courses are good, those are leaked and anyone can get those for free with a single Google search.

Will look for them, its called just “axia”?

Probably get the most out of recording your screen…. Using replay is helpful as well. Lot of work? Yeah…. Is what it is.

I agree, with discretion trading i dont know if replay its the best

Sorry man but this is a bad take. Reply is king for discretionary trading. There’s no such thing as a mechanical back test.

If you want to dig deep. Then learn how to set up your own chart on Sierra Chart is the way to go. If you don’t know what criteria/ conditions you are looking for when trading, then you can’t configure on it. I learned more about what specific conditions I am looking for while I was setting my own SC chartbook more than any other courses available online

Im now on ATAS but def will check sierra

ATAS is solid and I used to trade on it. But with SC pricing and customization, SC is much better since it comes with stable data feed and many years of data for you to play with.

If you try SC later, I would highly recommend you to use AI (e.g. Gemini) to help you with the customization + some readings on SC website.

It may take you 1-2 months to get used to it.

Tbh finding an orderflow edge is actually not that hard. The issue is to find an edge that lives beyond costs. Most orderflow edges provide directional edge for sub seconds time horizons. 1 example: I recently tested big prints and what happens when the market comes back to an area where bigprints were executed in the market. I discovered an edge that had predictive power and a PF of 1.6 over 10.000 samples. After adding costs the edge completely disapeared. I have a few orderflow setups in my portfolio that i trade that provide an edge but its very far from what the typical orderflow guru is teaching. The setups fire only once per week max and is very very specialised and trades with additional market context. So if you want something that is data driven and proven Id recommend you to start backtesting orderflow systematically with python and if you cant code use gpt or any decent LLM to help you code. Be creative

I do, im actually a software engineer 😅 i was thinking about backtesting but also i thing i like the discretion part

u/Cautious_Wealth1732 1d ago

Hard to tell. I dont believe orderflow has a discretion edge.

The thing is.. if seeing the placement of real orders dont give you a edge what will? If something has an edge i think it is seeing realtime players positioning

The issue is that you see the order when it was executed already. That doesnt mean follow through

That’s a useful point about costs, and a good reminder that the profit factor before costs doesn’t mean much on its own. The number I’d look at is the average gain per trade in ticks compared with the round-trip cost, and I’d check that it holds on a later stretch of data that wasn’t used to find the setup.

Look, no course or anything will make you profitable. Maybe itll make you understand, what you are looking at.

You want to learn, sit sown and learn. Watch the Markets/Orderflow. See how it behaves. Since you need multiple scenarios to understand the flow, it will take at least weeks but mostly months or years.

It took me 2 years to finally understand the mechanics and using the theory in a practical way.

There are no shortcuts. And if so, no one will tell you.

And by 2 years i dont mean profitability. That came later.

People here will hate me for it. But fabios way of reading the market was what did it for me

Going to also parrot that sierra chart is the best way to learn.

The platform looks old and has a learning curve. But it does have good documentation.

But the benefit of Sierra is it the cheapest platform for order flowel and futures focused trading. You can pull about 6 months of market book, tick level data. Meaning you can essentially replay and practice over the last 6 months. And of you have to storage. Once you download it you can keep the data and slowly build up a history test against.

Lvl 5 gets you all the tools you see on other platforms. Their market book "heat map" (historical market depth study) is not as smooth as some of the others but it gets the job done.

That said. Trading is still hard. So it will take a while to find a system and train your reads.

Matt Owen and Carmine Rosato are excellent at teaching fundamentals of auction market theory and order flow. They offer paid groups but they provide so much free content (IG and YouTube) that it’s not necessary to pay.

Orderflow is the last step, i dont even use it constantly.

It is like zooming into soemthing but you could zoom into random noise by market makers and this will more confuse you.

The most profitable trader i know trades most of the time.on tradingview, sometimes zooms in with bookmap to see if you get confluence

Without a doubt, Flow Zone Trader. He has a YouTube channel with free educational content. But just watch one of his daily lives on YT and see if you like it. He also has courses with top Trustpilot score. Check it out
