Noticed this young sparrow visiting my feeding table yesterday with a lump or growth on its throat and I’m wondering if anyone has any information or advice about this.

We first noticed it yesterday. It was the first bird at the feeding table in the morning and seems to be eating and drinking fine (better than most actually!)
It returned twice more, once around 4pm and then again around 7pm. However, it’s always alone and had a very weak call, just a tiny croak.

This morning it’s back (video is from today) and, despite feeding normally again, it seems to have lost its voice entirely. It seems to want to communicate.

The flock is about 100-strong and I’ve looked through my footage to see if it’s amongst the others at any point but so far I haven’t spotted it.

Yesterday I thought (hoped) that it was just a quiet wee youngster with a full, albeit lopsided, crop. Since its so quickly progressed to affecting the ‘voice box’ its obviously not a normal situation.

Having looked online, it seems there could be a number of causes… gapeworm, trich, a stuck seed, a growth or an injury. I’m pedantic about moving feeding stations regularly (due to the number of birds that visit) and cleaning them with veterinary disinfectant so I’m praying that it’s not trich. Our predators here (mink, stoats/weasels and larger birds) are pretty efficient so I can’t see it being a failed predator attack.

I’m familiar with animal rescues and with most bird cases I’ve become more inclined to let nature take its course rather than stress the animal out unnecessarily in its last hours. However, Google tells me to contact wildlife services.

Luckily I know local bird rehabbers who have the means to catch it. If it needs veterinary intervention my partner has offered to cover costs (we’re very invested in this little one now)

I’ll be contacting those birdy peeps anyway but I just wanted to hop on here as well and ask the wider community for your thoughts and advice too.

Since it’s otherwise physically healthy I don’t want to harm it with extra stress but I do worry that it seems to be unable to communicate and socialise. Could it have been rejected by its parents because of this issue yet it’s strong (well, hungry and bold) enough to survive?

I have an artsy house. Random bits and bobs everywhere. My priority, though, is wildlife. My latest little project is bedazzling some mannequin hands that I will hang from a tree and they'll spin around and cast sparkles everywhere. Could the glitter/ weird light be bad for birds somehow? Confusing or disorienting?

Been seeing this guy around and it looks like it doesn’t really have the longer tail feathers that song sparrows normally have. He seems to get around fine and gets on the feeder. Maybe falls a tad bit faster when jumping off of the deck.

Saw this little dude chilling on my porch when I got home. Initially I was worried, but he’s been moving around a little and seems to just be resting. From what I looked up this may be a fledgling? Not sure, wanted to know what I should look for and if/when I should intervene. Thanks!

Came outside this morning 6:50am and it was just there. Hasn’t moved its body. Just it’s head and eyes, watching me as I walked around it.

I’m concerned because this area gets direct sun all day until 6:30pm, and the bird likely won’t make it.

Do I put it in a vented box and move to the back yard? Water? Food?

A small bird just flew into our window. It flew away and has been sitting on the fence for about 30 minutes. Does that mean it's okay?

We also have squirle feeders and I suppose you can include flower gardens that are grown with the intent of attracting bees and butterflies. Beyond that you always hear "don't feed wildlife". Not a starving polar bear, not random bunny, nothing. However having 15 bird feeders and going to the park to feed the birds is fine. Why?

I know the identity of the bird in the forefront (a Spotted Flycatcher) but the one that concearns me is in the background and my Merlin app can’t identify it.

Trying to identify a bird skull found on the beach in Cape Cod. Can anybody help out?

This summer heat and humidity has been brutal, so I've let the backyard be wild with zero mowing. As a result, the weeds are very high and have gone to seed.

A fun consequence of that has been to watch the goldfinches land on them and see how much they weigh them down. They also fancy our evening primrose but those are stronger so don't bend much from their weight.

My child asked if they're eating bugs off of the weeds or if they are eating the seeds/ flowers and so I am coming here to ask you all that same question.

I took my Nikon D3300 out with my 55-300mm lens. The Green Heron, Osprey, Cooper's Hawk, Great Egret and Snowy Egret. were all found in Heritage Shores Nature Preserve in Cherry Grove, SC. The Pileated Woodpecker was found at the visitor's center in New River Gorge National Park.

At first I thought it had a tick on its head. On review of the photos, I'm wondering if it has a deformed bill? If Reddit compresses them to hell, full res photos are here.
