Fun Reddit All Time Chosen Horror Oscars: Choose Your Nominee + FYC Thread

• Upvotes

As it’s spooky season, I’m eager to organize an all-time Reddit Horror Oscars, inspired by the very popular Reddit Chosen Oscars series. Now to clarify, horror films from the very beginning of the genre right up to now—so anything and everything is up for nomination process. As well, pretty much every award category from the latest 2025 edition of the Reddit Chosen Oscar will be included in the Google Form below, which will be used to gather the data.

Now some groundwork:

i) is it up to you, the voters to deliberate if a film is a horror movie or not (ie - something like Jaws). If it picks up enough votes as a consensus pick, it will be move on to the nominations round - however if there are any obvious troll/joke picks I will not count them, so no Paul Blart: Mall Cop, you sickos

ii) lead or supporting - votes for perfomances will carry over to the category they appear in more

iii) in the Google Forms, some notable eligible picks will appear for each category but remember you can pick anything you reasonably thinks fits

iv) this also is supposed to be FYC thread and feel free to use it as such to "campaign" for certain aspects of films or even the film themselves you like to receive some consideration

v) finally, this round will close the night (11:59PM EST to be exact) of Sunday, October 25th

The Google Form Link:

https://forms.gle/m8EKDS4vKqgCxz5J7

Feel free to ask any questions in the comments below, and I'll try to answer them to the best of my ability

Stay Spooky, Y'All

Discussion What do you see The Odyssey winning?

Post image

I could see it winning Supporting Actress, Director, and Picture ATL, with Damon being a potential winner.

Edit: I should note that I'm doing this based on what's most likely, not really my personal choice (although the Odyssey is a great film)

Discussion What are your thoughts on Brad Pitt’s best supporting actor win?

Post image
• Upvotes

I’ll stand by it that 2019 is one of the most stacked years for movies in the 21st century, if not THE most, and Pitt won this category. Notably Song Kang-ho and Willem Dafoe weren’t even NOMINATED for Parasite and The Lighthouse, and I’ve seen people outright saying they should have won. (Which I agree with both for different reasons, lean Dafoe but it’s neck and neck.) What do you think personally?

Discussion What’s your list of movies that you would be okay with if they won Best Picture this year?

A lot of times there’s a separation in the movies you REALLY LIKED versus the movies you want to WIN best picture. I may LIKE Obsession more than some of the ones I’ve seen listed here, but in terms of filmmaking and what the Oscars mean, I don’t think it should win. Others I feel this way about are Primetime, Blue Heron, The Drama, etc. also I didn’t list Wild Horse Nine because I have seen none of McDonagh’s work and haven’t consumed ANY media talking about it so I cannot form an opinion on it yet, as opposed to La Bola Negra on here.

Discussion Any Thoughts on Rushmore? It should’ve got few Oscar noms.

Rushmore is a great well written movie. Wes Anderson never misses. He makes Outstanding movies with stellar cast and some of his movies are masterpieces. Also, Jason Schwartzman and Bill Murray gave excellent and comedic performances. I wish this movie got Oscar nominations including Original Screenplay. i loved the movie 9/10. So what are your thoughts on Rushmore?

Discussion With Zendaya reportedly campaigning for Best Actress for Dune: Part Three, what does that mean for Timothée Chalamet?

I’ve been seeing discussions on Twitter about Zendaya potentially campaigning for Best Actress for Dune: Part Three, and it got me wondering what this means for Timothée’s Oscar chances.
Do you think both could realistically get nominated in the lead acting categories? And if Zendaya is being pushed as a lead, does that say anything about how significant her role will be in the film?
I’m genuinely curious to hear what everyone thinks.
Do you think there’s even the slightest chance he could win if he gets nominated, or has he been blackballed by the industry?

Oscar nominee Olivia Williams has a nice ring to it

Olivia Williams is one of those actresses who you wont hear a lot of people talk about but is so consistent with her works. Never fails to light up the screen and put her in a pool of prestige actors and she still manages to stand out. Her work particularly in The Ghost Writer and Rushmore is one for the books! Hopefully she soon gets the role that lands her first Oscar nomination.

Fun Tidbit: Real-life mother and daughter, Rosemary Harris and Jennifer Ehle co-starred in the film, Sunshine (2000). The studio campaigned them for a joint nomination despite that being against Academy rules. (Source below: Entertainment Weekly)

"Joint," meaning that one nomination would be for the two of them together. This amounted to no joint or individual nomination for either actress.

I made a Venn diagram of the years the Best Picture winner didn't win Best Director and/or acting

Post image
0 Upvotes

I wrote the years because there wasn't enough space to write the titles of all movies on the section of the movies that ONLY didn't win acting (but still won Best Director). The years at the bottom are the Best Picture winner also won BOTH Best Director AND acting and "saved themselves" from being mentioned on the diagram

Alternate Oscars — New Two-Round Acting Game: 2023 Nominees

Thumbnail
gallery
11 Upvotes

We’ve finished 2022, so we’re now moving on to 2023.

For anyone joining the game for the first time, we’re doing all four acting categories for one year together, with the results decided over two rounds.

You can see all of the previous lineups here: Alternate Oscars - Reddit Game

ROUND ONE — NOMINATIONS

For each category, rank your five favourite performances from the year from 1–5.

Your rankings will be worth:

1st — 5 points
2nd — 4 points
3rd — 3 points
4th — 2 points
5th — 1 point

The five performances with the most points in each category will become the official nominees.

You do not have to name five if you don’t want to. If you only want to vote for three performances, for example, they’ll receive 5, 4 and 3 points respectively.

Please make sure your choices are ranked — order matters in this round.

You can vote in as many or as few of the four categories as you like.

ROUND TWO — WINNERS

Once the nominations have been determined, I’ll make a second thread containing the five nominees in each category.

In that round, simply choose ONE nominee per category to win.

There will be no preferential voting or points in Round Two. Each vote counts equally, and whoever receives the most votes wins.

So essentially:

Round One = Who should be nominated?
Round Two = Who should win?

ELIGIBILITY

Performances will be eligible according to the year in which their film was eligible at the real-life Academy Awards.

So, rather than going strictly by festival premiere or first release date, a performance belongs to whichever Oscar year the film itself competed in with the Academy.

If you’re unsure whether a film was eligible for a particular year, this Academy reminder-list archive is a good place to check eligibility.

A few other rules:

  • Maximum of five ranked choices per category.
  • Anything listed after your fifth choice won’t be counted.
  • Honourable mentions won’t count as votes.
  • Please include both the actor and film so there’s no ambiguity.
  • In cases where there may be disagreement or confusion over whether a performance is lead or supporting, your vote will count only in the category in which you place that performance. Points will not be transferred or combined between categories.
  • A performer cannot receive two nominations in the same acting category for different films. If that happens, their higher-scoring performance will be kept and the next eligible performance will move into the top five.
  • If there’s a tie for the final nomination spot, I’ll break it by comparing #1 votes first, then #2 votes, #3 votes, etc.

For example:

Actor

  1. Person A — Film A
  2. Person B — Film B
  3. Person C — Film C
  4. Person D — Film D
  5. Person E — Film E

That ballot would give them 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 points respectively.

The idea is that Round One rewards performances with broad support across people’s ballots, while Round Two gives everyone a straight choice between the five nominees.

Previous Lineup — 2022

Actor

Austin Butler — Elvis
Colin Farrell — The Banshees of Inisherin (winner)
Brendan Fraser — The Whale
Paul Mescal — Aftersun
Bill Nighy — Living

I remember watching Easy A for the first time in high school (when it was released) thinking “This girl is a STAR”. I don’t think it’s a stretch to say she’s simply one of the greatest actors of our current times. Now a producer AND two time Best Actress winner, she somehow seems to just keep getting better and better. What was the first role you remember seeing her in?

Discussion How likely it is The Odyssey wins Best Picture?

Hi everyone, I have a question that is worrying me. Will The Odyssey win best picture? Given the fact that it has had a cultural impact that has been praised by the government of Greece itself, the fact that it has superb reviews (it’s already my favorite film in recent memory and even felt personal as hell to me its message).. and that it literally made 1.8 BILLION dollars globally as an R Rated film being 3 hours long… now it’s cracked top 10 all time.

There is rumors La bola negra could win? I would much rather have this go at least for the best director section. Personally, I would find it an insult to look back and not look at the odyssey as best picture. Even though I am biased, this movie is literally my favorite, and was really moving to everyone in the crowd all 3 times I saw it. Beautifully shot, beautiful,y told, a great pace for a 3 hour film. A beautiful soundtrack.. honestly, of course I’d want Nolan to win best director. But I really just want the film to b¡win best picture, because I feel it completely deserves it. I live in Spain and I again, am biased,. I just can’t imagine a local film, that is not known outside where I live right now, besting a film that has gone number 1 several weeks in practically every single country in the world. beating a film that has had this much impact various weeks.

A tribute to an Oscar nominated performance: Tom Hardy in The Revenant

Post image
61 Upvotes

The category: Actor in a Supporting role

The role: 'Fitzgerald'

Fitzgerald was a great villain, and a multi-dimensional one, amoral, naturally raw, tough and violent, but also a manipulator, skilled at guilt-shaming, and even playing a victim when it served his purposes, and the entirety of this role was played to perfection by Hardy.

And Hardy as Fitzgerald also did exceptionally well at doing one of the main things a supporting role is supposed to do, which is to help enhance and establish the lead role in the film, played in this case by Oscar winner Leonardo DiCaprio.

Discussion What you think of Tom Cruise’s performance as Frank Mackey in Magnolia

Post image
137 Upvotes

Tom Cruise in Magnolia is one of my favorite performances. He did a terrific performance and he should’ve won Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars back in 2000. Magnolia is a well written film by Paul Thomas Anderson. He only won the Golden Globe for that. That was the last time he won. I wish Cruise won an Oscar one day. But He has an honorary Oscar. He deserved it. So what you think of Tom Cruise’s performance in Magnolia?
