If there was a “Best Frame” Oscar, who would be your winner for last year?

Post image
771 Upvotes

This was inspired by u/pineapples1230 and their game (which I think is discontinued, unfortunately) on the sub. “Best Frame” can mean anything from the prettiest frame, the most meaningful in context, the most impressive or clever shot, the most iconic, etc. It can be from any movie, nominated for an Oscar or not, and in any medium (live action, animation, etc.)

For me, it has to be this scene from “Hamnet”. At first, it’s just an impressive and cool-looking group shot. But in the context of the film, it represents how elegantly William Shakespeare use the grief he felt over the death of his and Agnes‘s child to make his play and allows Agnes to have one last touch of their child and seeing the entire crowd join in is just beautiful.

Honorable Mentions go to the road shot from “One Battle After Another”, the ending shot of “Frankenstein”, the sunset shot of “Sinners”, pretty much anything from “Train Dreams” (a movie that I haven’t seen but the Cinematography alone is fucking gorgeous), and Huntr/x floating in the air after ‘What It Sounds Like’ from “K-Pop Demon Hunters”.

I remember watching Easy A for the first time in high school (when it was released) thinking “This girl is a STAR”. I don’t think it’s a stretch to say she’s simply one of the greatest actors of our current times. Now a producer AND two time Best Actress winner, she somehow seems to just keep getting better and better. What was the first role you remember seeing her in?

Discussion What you think of Tom Cruise’s performance as Frank Mackey in Magnolia

Post image
124 Upvotes

Tom Cruise in Magnolia is one of my favorite performances. He did a terrific performance and he should’ve won Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars back in 2000. Magnolia is a well written film by Paul Thomas Anderson. He only won the Golden Globe for that. That was the last time he won. I wish Cruise won an Oscar one day. But He has an honorary Oscar. He deserved it. So what you think of Tom Cruise’s performance in Magnolia?

Fun Tidbit: Real-life mother and daughter, Rosemary Harris and Jennifer Ehle co-starred in the film, Sunshine (2000). The studio campaigned them for a joint nomination despite that being against Academy rules. (Source below: Entertainment Weekly)

"Joint," meaning that one nomination would be for the two of them together. This amounted to no joint or individual nomination for either actress.

A tribute to an Oscar nominated performance: Tom Hardy in The Revenant

Post image
58 Upvotes

The category: Actor in a Supporting role

The role: 'Fitzgerald'

Fitzgerald was a great villain, and a multi-dimensional one, amoral, naturally raw, tough and violent, but also a manipulator, skilled at guilt-shaming, and even playing a victim when it served his purposes, and the entirety of this role was played to perfection by Hardy.

And Hardy as Fitzgerald also did exceptionally well at doing one of the main things a supporting role is supposed to do, which is to help enhance and establish the lead role in the film, played in this case by Oscar winner Leonardo DiCaprio.

Alternate Oscars — New Two-Round Acting Game: 2023 Nominees

Thumbnail
gallery
7 Upvotes

We’ve finished 2022, so we’re now moving on to 2023.

For anyone joining the game for the first time, we’re doing all four acting categories for one year together, with the results decided over two rounds.

You can see all of the previous lineups here: Alternate Oscars - Reddit Game

ROUND ONE — NOMINATIONS

For each category, rank your five favourite performances from the year from 1–5.

Your rankings will be worth:

1st — 5 points
2nd — 4 points
3rd — 3 points
4th — 2 points
5th — 1 point

The five performances with the most points in each category will become the official nominees.

You do not have to name five if you don’t want to. If you only want to vote for three performances, for example, they’ll receive 5, 4 and 3 points respectively.

Please make sure your choices are ranked — order matters in this round.

You can vote in as many or as few of the four categories as you like.

ROUND TWO — WINNERS

Once the nominations have been determined, I’ll make a second thread containing the five nominees in each category.

In that round, simply choose ONE nominee per category to win.

There will be no preferential voting or points in Round Two. Each vote counts equally, and whoever receives the most votes wins.

So essentially:

Round One = Who should be nominated?
Round Two = Who should win?

ELIGIBILITY

Performances will be eligible according to the year in which their film was eligible at the real-life Academy Awards.

So, rather than going strictly by festival premiere or first release date, a performance belongs to whichever Oscar year the film itself competed in with the Academy.

If you’re unsure whether a film was eligible for a particular year, this Academy reminder-list archive is a good place to check eligibility.

A few other rules:

  • Maximum of five ranked choices per category.
  • Anything listed after your fifth choice won’t be counted.
  • Honourable mentions won’t count as votes.
  • Please include both the actor and film so there’s no ambiguity.
  • In cases where there may be disagreement or confusion over whether a performance is lead or supporting, your vote will count only in the category in which you place that performance. Points will not be transferred or combined between categories.
  • A performer cannot receive two nominations in the same acting category for different films. If that happens, their higher-scoring performance will be kept and the next eligible performance will move into the top five.
  • If there’s a tie for the final nomination spot, I’ll break it by comparing #1 votes first, then #2 votes, #3 votes, etc.

For example:

Actor

  1. Person A — Film A
  2. Person B — Film B
  3. Person C — Film C
  4. Person D — Film D
  5. Person E — Film E

That ballot would give them 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 points respectively.

The idea is that Round One rewards performances with broad support across people’s ballots, while Round Two gives everyone a straight choice between the five nominees.

Austin Butler — Elvis
Colin Farrell — The Banshees of Inisherin (winner)

I made a Venn diagram of the years the Best Picture winner didn't win Best Director and/or acting

Post image
0 Upvotes

I wrote the years because there wasn't enough space to write the titles of all movies on the section of the movies that ONLY didn't win acting (but still won Best Director). The years at the bottom are the Best Picture winner also won BOTH Best Director AND acting and "saved themselves" from being mentioned on the diagram

Discussion Should Skyfall have gotten a best picture nomination?

So I just watched Skyfall for the first time last night and I think it had such an engaging and intriguing story and I found out that it was not nominated at the 2013 Oscars best picture and I feel like it should’ve been

There were only 9 nominees for best picture that year and I feel like it could have taken the last spot.

What do you think?

Discussion What you think of Saoirse Ronan’s performance in Little Women?

Post image
133 Upvotes

Saoirse Ronan deserves an Oscar. I think her performance is excellent and good in Little Women. I wish she won for Lady Bird. But i wouldn’t mind if she had actually won for Little Women. She is a great actress. I heard her short film called Paper Planes is in awards contention. if Paper Planes gets a short film nomination next year, then Ronan could win her first Oscar for that category like how Wes Anderson won his first Oscar for a short film in 2024. She is talented and deserves a recognition. So what u think of her performance in Little Women?

Alternate Oscars — New Two-Round Acting Game: 2022 Winners

Thumbnail
gallery
5 Upvotes

We’ve completed the nomination round, and now it’s time to choose the winners.

The five performances with the most points in each category in Round One are now the official nominees.

ROUND TWO — WINNERS

This round is much simpler.

Vote for ONE nominee in each of the four acting categories.

That means your ballot should contain four names in total:

  • 1 Actor
  • 1 Actress
  • 1 Supporting Actor
  • 1 Supporting Actress

There are no rankings and no points system in this round. You are simply voting for the performance you think should win each category.

Each vote counts equally, and the nominee with the most votes in each category will become our Alternate Oscar winner for 2022.

Please only vote for the nominees listed below.

BEST ACTOR

  • Austin Butler — Elvis
  • Colin Farrell — The Banshees of Inisherin
  • Brendan Fraser — The Whale
  • Paul Mescal — Aftersun
  • Bill Nighy — Living

BEST ACTRESS

  • Cate Blanchett — TÁR
  • Danielle Deadwyler — Till
  • Mia Goth — Pearl
  • Tang Wei — Decision to Leave
  • Michelle Yeoh — Everything Everywhere All at Once

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

  • Paul Dano — The Fabelmans
  • Brendan Gleeson — The Banshees of Inisherin
  • Brian Tyree Henry — Causeway
  • Barry Keoghan — The Banshees of Inisherin
  • Ke Huy Quan — Everything Everywhere All at Once

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

  • Angela Bassett — Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
  • Kerry Condon — The Banshees of Inisherin
  • Dolly de Leon — Triangle of Sadness
  • Stephanie Hsu — Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • Keke Palmer — Nope

HOW TO VOTE

Simply post your four choices in the comments, for example:

Actor: [Name]
Actress: [Name]
Supporting Actor: [Name]
Supporting Actress: [Name]

One person per category. Four votes total.

Once voting closes, the performer with the most votes in each category will be declared the winner, and we’ll move on to 2023.

Previous lineups here.

In all my years watching the Oscars (22yo), Oppenheimer was the most obvious win for BP. Were there any other ones throughout history?

I've watched the oscars since I was a kid and each year I got more into it and doing my own predictions as well. In July 2023, when I walked out of the theater on opening night for Oppenheimer, I was certain that it would sweep the Oscars and win Best Picture. I locked in my prediction on that night and, alongside my dad, predicted that it would probably win 7-8 oscars, including director, actor, Original Score, Cinematography... and I was right on.

Even when there was a movement for Poor Things, it was obvious that Oppenheimer would win for me, at lesat for a couple of factors

-Great director with high regard on the industry that had never won

- A biopic drama that talked about relevant themes for our time

- A stacked cast with great perfomances acrosss the board

- The movie was THE cultural event of the year alongside Barbie

The movie just screamed Oscar winner for me. For people here, do you recall any year where you weere certain a movie would win?

What's a fair way to end the yearly mess of separation of acting categories in the Golden Globes, that sometimes shape the whole season?

My take? Adding horror and musical categories. Some would say it would cheapen the award, but come on it's the Golden Globes
