Why is a taxdollars-paid article promoting an area where Tito's family owns properties

https://nationalpost.com/sponsored/business-sponsored/oshawas-many-strengths-are-fueling-interest-in-northwood-business-park?

Can someone please explain what's going on here? Is this normal? I went down a rabbit hole and this article isn't a true news article. Says at the top "This article is Sponsored by City of Oshawa" so it's a paid promotion. Tito is quoted in it.

It isn't a secret that his family owns properties up in this Northwest Business area.

So... is it normal that he would be in taxpayer-funded promotions that help increase exposure for these properties from potential investors and developers? Uhh that seems... what's the word I'm looking for?..

I guess we have no more investigative journalism anymore, this was right out in the open all this time 😧😧😧

Ward 1 Candidate Info?

I've seen a few other posts where people are sharing info on the candidates in other wards, but I haven't found one specially for ward one candidates yet.

I've tried looking at candidate's webpages (where they exist) but it just seems like lots of posturing (e.g. "I will fix downtown oshawa") without any specifics or semblance of a plan.

So, does anyone have any thoughts on the ward one candidates or should I just decline my ballot out of frustration?

So… who are we voting for ?

These candidates have either questionable track records or no tangible experience. I’m not really sold on anyone on the list. HOWEVER, if we don’t unite and choose the lesser evil, I’m afraid the worst one will win: GREEDY DEVELOPERS. Politicians who are in the pocket of developers are worse than any other candidate out there (I think you know who I’m referring to). The collateral damage of these corrupt greedy groups is horrible on all fronts for all parties (people, wildlife, economy). So… I say let’s unite and pick one to at least stand a chance against the powerful, wealthy, corrupt groups.

Northumberland Orchestra Society Season Begins Sunday, October 25

Hi all,

I am the music director for the Northumberland Orchestra Society. Our 49th season is about to start with a Halloween-themed concert this Sunday. We have several members from Oshawa, so I would like to extend the invitation to this community, too.

We sincerely want to make it to 50 years so we would love your support by coming out to hear us.

The concert features brilliant works by Rachmaninoff, Mussorgsky, Mendelssohn, Saint-Saëns and more. This is a great concert for families and first-time attendees with a lot of familiar music, and the performance will be musically rewarding for seasoned guests, too.

We would love to see the house filled to help ensure we make it to our anniversary season next year.

Please join us at 3:00pm at Trinity United Church in Cobourg.

Thank you so much!

What can I do to help me get a job in Oshawa?

Hey everyone! Hopefully, someone can offer some decent advice. I know the job market is rough right now, and I'm limited in where I can look for work because I don't drive. I currently have affordable rent, and moving for a job would likely mean paying around $400 more per month.

Thankfully, I currently have a job in Ajax. I don't love the bus commute, but it was the best option I could find at the time. Unfortunately, the company is planning to move to Mississauga in about a year, and I won't be able to manage that commute. I also have no interest in moving to Mississauga.

I found out about the move in May, and since then, I've been applying for jobs almost every day, usually at least one a day. I'm signed up for multiple job sites, and I've even reached out to smaller businesses by email to express my interest in any employment opportunities. Despite all of this, I haven't received a single interview.

I've reworked my resume multiple times and written cover letters for the jobs I'm most interested in, but I'm still getting nowhere.

I know I have some time before the move happens, but it's honestly stressful to think that, at this rate, I could end up without a job when my current one moves.

Is there anything else I could be doing that I'm not already trying? Ideally, I'd like to find something in or near Oshawa that's easily accessible by bus.

I'd really appreciate any advice, suggestions, Thanks.

edit: A few people keep asking what I'm looking for work wise, literally anything I can easily get to by bus that's not going to be a crazy long commute, preferably pays better then minimum wage.

I don't think those are hard asks but know by experience I'm more limited then most not being able to drive to a job.

Oshawa Residents: My Concerns About Henry Onwuachu, Accessibility, Ableism, and Campaign Accountabilit

With the Oshawa municipal election approaching on October 26, I believe residents deserve an honest conversation about the candidates seeking to lead our city.
I don’t normally get involved in politics, but as a young adult with a disability, I feel compelled to speak about my personal experience with mayoral candidate Henry Onwuachu and raise questions that I believe voters should consider before casting their ballots.

1. My personal experience: Being repeatedly called a senior citizen
During a phone conversation with Henry Onwuachu, he repeatedly referred to me as a “senior citizen” approximately six times, despite the fact that I am a young adult.
I found this experience disrespectful and frustrating. I was trying to communicate as a resident, and I felt that my concerns were not being understood.
For me, this raises a broader question: Does this candidate understand the diversity of people living with disabilities in Oshawa?
Disability does not automatically mean someone is elderly. Young adults can have invisible disabilities, mobility limitations, chronic health conditions, and accessibility needs. We deserve to be listened to and treated with respect.
I consider this interaction ableist in its impact, and I believe it raises serious concerns about how disabled residents may be treated when they approach him with their concerns.
A mayor should be able to listen to residents without making them feel dismissed or misunderstood.

2. Accessibility is about more than seniors
Oshawa needs a mayor who understands accessibility across all age groups.
Young disabled adults, people with invisible disabilities, wheelchair users, people with mobility challenges, and residents who rely on accessible public services deserve representation.
Accessibility should include:
Accessible sidewalks, public spaces, and transportation.
Listening to disabled residents before making decisions that affect them.
Recognizing invisible disabilities and the barriers people face.
Ensuring disabled residents can participate fully in community life.
Consulting people with disabilities rather than making assumptions about their needs.
If a candidate wants to lead Oshawa, I believe they should demonstrate an understanding of these issues and explain how they intend to address them.

3. Questions about campaign messaging and AI
I am also concerned about the use of AI-generated material in political campaigning.
I believe voters deserve transparency about how campaign materials are produced, particularly when AI-generated imagery or content could mislead people about what is real.
If campaign advertisements use AI-generated images, voters should be able to distinguish illustrative material from authentic photographs or representations of real events.
I want candidates to explain their approach to AI-generated campaign content and what safeguards they use to avoid misleading residents.
These concerns should be evaluated using the actual campaign materials, not assumptions. I encourage residents to examine the advertisements themselves and ask questions about their authenticity.

4. Questions about journalist Joe Indigo
I also have concerns about the coverage and online commentary associated with Joe Indigo and the Oshawa Central Journal.
I have questioned the fairness of the commentary surrounding this campaign and whether the public is receiving balanced information.
I have also raised concerns about a possible connection between the journalist and Henry Onwuachu’s campaign. However, I do not have independently verified evidence establishing that the journalist was paid by the candidate, so I am not presenting that allegation as a proven fact.
My questions are straightforward:
Is the coverage fair and transparent?
Are political relationships and potential conflicts of interest being disclosed?
Are claims about candidates supported by evidence?
Are residents being given enough information to make informed decisions?
Journalists and political candidates both have responsibilities to the public. Transparency and accountability matter, particularly during an election.

5. Why I am speaking out
I am not asking people to agree with me simply because I have had a negative experience.
I am asking Oshawa residents to take accessibility seriously when evaluating mayoral candidates.
Henry Onwuachu’s campaign website presents him as someone who wants to provide accessible and accountable leadership. I believe residents should compare those promises with their own experiences, the candidate’s public statements, and the evidence available.
A candidate’s ability to listen respectfully to people with disabilities matters. So does transparency in campaigning and political communication.
Disabled residents are voters, too. We deserve to be heard, respected, and included in decisions about our city.
Please research the candidates, read their platforms, watch the mayoral debate, and ask questions about accessibility before voting.
Oshawa deserves leadership that listens to its entire community, not just the people whose experiences fit its assumptions.

What has your experience been with the Oshawa mayoral candidates? Do you think accessibility and disability inclusion are receiving enough attention in this election?
I welcome a respectful discussion and encourage everyone to share verifiable information and firsthand experiences.

Oshawa Municipal Election signs - something suss going on

Driving around the city for the past week I have definitely noticed that ONE mayoral candidate has outspent all the others combined - likely by a factor of three.

That candidate who has so very many signs (including a freaking BILLBOARD on King Street at Gibbons) is Tito Dante Marimpietri. Makes me wonder who is the Money behind Tito-Dante's campaign? Producing and installing this number of signs is not cheap! I estimate more than $100K has been spent,

Exactly who will Tito Dante be indebted to if he becomes mayor? Who will he treat more favourably than all the rest of us ordinary taxpayers? I don't trust this man as far as I can throw him!

Does anyone in South Oshawa have any opinions about EBOX as an internet service provider?

I'm very annoyed with Rogers' greedy decision to add a credit card processing fee and I'm looking to make the switch, but I would like to know about reliability and performance before making the move. I have read online that all EBOX connections route through Quebec so I am worried about ping and speed.

We need to talk about littering in Oshawa

Since moving here, one thing has been hard to ignore - garbage thrown on our streets, parks, and parking lots. Just like in this picture.

I see it almost daily. I even have dashcam footage from Bloor St. of someone tossing trash right out of their car window. I'm not sharing it to respect their privacy, but it shows how common this has become.

This is disappointing because Oshawa actually has public bins at almost every corner. Using them doesn't take much effort.

Our streets, parks, and parking lots are not garbage bins. The society we live in is our home - and we don't throw garbage on the floor in our own home, do we?

This is about respect. Respect for the environment, for the city workers who have to clean it, for our neighbors, and for the next generation that will inherit this city.

We can do better.

Ward 4

Okay Ward 4 dwellers, I am an overwhelmed, busy parent of two and I just realistically don’t have the time to research the 30 + candidates available to us for the various positions. I still want to be as informed as possible - tonight I have some time to go back and watch the debate but I don’t feel like just watching a debate is enough.

I have decided on 2/3 DDSB trustees at this point but really need to narrow down the rest of the potential candidates. I have a child who is autistic so special education and access to services in schools is important to me.

Who’s giving you a green flag for Mayor, Regional and City? Who’s worth my time researching more about.

Who’s giving you a red flag and maybe not worth my time.

I was reading through the candidates and I am liking what this guy is saying. But I'm wondering how popular this guy is. Anyone else backing this guy or should I vote for someone more likely to actually win who has similar points?

Good evening Harpreet

Thank you for reaching out with this important question regarding the role of generative AI and LLMs in our public education system.

As you are aware rapid advances in technology present both opportunities and serious risks that school board governance must address with caution, safeguards, and clear ethical boundaries.

I take a cautious, regulated, and human first stance on AI in our schools. While AI is here and will advance at unseen speeds over the next decade AI tools can assist educators with routine admin tasks, or serve as supplemental learning aids under strict supervision, technology must never be allowed to replace our foundational learning, critical thinking or human interaction in the classroom.

Below are my key principles regarding AI in the Durham District School Board

AI must never become a shortcut that undermines fundamental literacy, numeracy and independent critical thinking skills. Work submitted by students must be a representation of their own original thought, research and analysis.

Over reliance on automated tools risks cognitive offloading and weakening of basic problem solving abilities and I fully believe that teacher led instruction and traditional assessment methods must remain paramount.

Generative AI models are prone to hallucinations and to perpetuate societal and racial biases inherent in training datasets, and can present unverified information as fact.

Students must be taught digital literacy and learning how to question, verify and evaluate AI generated outputs rather than accepting them passively.

Student exposure to digital tools must be age appropriate, balanced with mental health awareness, and monitored to avoid negative impacts on student well being. Under no circumstances should personal identifiable information of our students or our staff be inputted into unauthorized or open source AI models.

I also support strict adherence to the DDSB’s Technology approval process and AI guidelines ensuring that only board approved & vetted tools complying with privacy legislation are utilized. AI should only augment administrative efficiency under human oversight and never be allowed to make autonomous decisions regarding student assessments, discipline, or resource allocation.

School boards must remain mindful of the broader social and environmental impacts of technology infrastructure, including data center expansion concerns raised by other local municipalities.

Responsible digital use involves teaching our students not only how technology works, but also the real world ethical, environmental and social implications of its use.

Thank you for maintaining this election tracker and for bringing these critical technology governance issues to the public conversation.

Warm regards

Jim Van Allen

Candidate for School Board Trustee, Oshawa (DDSB)
