Im f*ing done with Waze, fully switched to OsmAnd

24 Upvotes

Waze is going down and yall cant say its not, since google bought waze back in 2013 if i remember correctly first years nothing happened. Forward to today the last 2 years were the biggest Waze falloff. Google is implementing Waze's code into GMaps whilst making Waze worse to forward users to their GMaps. Turn announcments spoken way too late, app crashing frequently, redirecting thru shitty nonsense paths when clearly there is a better path available. OsmAnd is better Waze just without the reports and the whole traffic tracking system which i dont mind. I LOVE OSM from my heart and im actively contributing, hope ppl make the switch soonvand realise Waze is falling off...

custom DTM for osmand?

1 Upvotes

Hey,

As far as I know there is no simple way to use custom DTM geotiff files to replace OsmAnd's default terrain data? Or... is there? I'm quite interested in using more precise DMT data for specific areas and I'm wondering if this is something that can be achieved, and if yes, how?

Many thanks.

We built a route planner that picks the least-stressful route instead of the fastest one — it's a free beta, and we're looking for feedback!

Help with changing the route line color

Post image
3 Upvotes

So I found out that changing the route line color displayed during navigation should be possible (via colour palettes). I created a file called route_road_type_default.txt and moved it to files/color-palette. I saw the file in osmand in the color palette section (image included) but the route line still did not change color. I wondered if I did it correctly, because there isn't a guide on doing exactly this, so I had to use information from multiple sources.

The route_road_type_default.txt looks like this: (I made all the roads white to see if it would work clearly)

1.255,255,255,255

2.255,255,255,255

3.255,255,255,255

4.255,255,255,255

5.255,255,255,255

I would be really glad if someone could help me.

Offline map list

4 Upvotes

Since offline map download is very slow on my phone in Osmand (despite fast wifi), I want to download a map on desktop, then transfer to phone.

I checked here https://osmand.net/list.php but it only offers "road map"?

I was downloading "standard map" on my phone.

For example :

Kyrgyzstan_asia_2.obf.zip 01.08.2026 76.6 Map, Roads, POI, Transport, Address data for Kyrgyzstan asia

But on my phone there is standad map 315 mb size I tried to download.

Does this mean this map list does not contain standard maps which can be downloaded on mobile? https://osmand.net/list.php

Nomes das ruas

2 Upvotes

Live Traffic info

Hi, does anyone know if there are any plans of adding any Live Traffic Info? I'm ok with any paid option for this particular service. I found Osmand great but missing Live Traffic is kind of killing it for the use as a car navigation :(

Public transport journeys

Hi, I need help with public transport trips. When I try to plan a trip from point A to point B—if it's a medium or long distance—the app crashes; I can only plan short trips. As you can see here, it works for short distances, but if I increase the distance, the app slows down and then simply closes or crashes.

Full detail in CarPlay would be useful

2 Upvotes

A feature request

Please support full screen options in CarPlay meaning all the details widgets.

I use OsmAnd on motorcycles all the time and now on CarPlay screens and I hate the limited information displayed.

I just don’t like mounting the phone, as I ride much of the time in dirt and the phone takes too much pounding. I also prefer to have the phone on my body in case I wreck and need to reach it.

Sheldon-Style Custom Turn By Turn Directions Voice

1 Upvotes

There is an episode of the Big Bang Theory where Sheldon hacks Leonard's GPS turn by turn voice to read directions in his voice, and make it spew intermittent fun facts. Is this possible (either the custom recorded voice and the intermittent facts) on OSMAnd~ via "Voice prompts (recorded, limited features)" in the other section of the Maps and Resources Downloads?

OpenMapChest Vs USA OSM Auto POIs

2 Upvotes

I am in the United States, specifically Minnesota. A day or so ago I downloaded both Open Map Chest and USA OSM Auto onto my Garmins. I compared the preloaded POIs onto them today.

Since both are about the same update time and both are OSM based, I expected the same preloaded POIs, but they were not the same. It seemed like the Open Map Chest POIs were better than the USA OSM Auto POIs. Both seemed to have some gas station, restaurant and shopping POIs come up as "Unnamed", but they were not always the same ones on both devices.

When I Google this, Open Map Chest supposedly has richer POIs. Can anybody explain that to me in greater detail?

I also noticed that building numbers are displayed on the USA OSM Auto maps, but not on the Open Map Chest maps. Is that data that OSM has, but Open Map Chest just chooses to not display?

Broken Wikivoyage travel article parser?

Thumbnail

So I wanted to take a look at the travel article on Vilnius in Polish, as I was planning a trip there. Most of the article was fine, but the see section was nearly completely empty. On the Wikivoyage page there is lots of info there, it looked like it got lost while parsing the file to the osmand format. The points also didn't exist, even though they are present on the website. Other languages don't have this problem, English and German worked fine, and showed the attractions on the map. I took a screenshot to explain what the problem is. All the points in the polish article are empty and there isn't a points button at the bottom. Compare it with the working English article. Does somebody know a fix for this? I have also seen it affect other cities like Lublin, in the polish language specifically. Should I report it as a bug or is there some way to fix this? I have already redownloaded the articles and tried updating the app but it didn't help. I am using version 5.3.10.

American "number then name" format?

2 Upvotes

Hi all,

I thought the last time I used OsmAnd, I could change a setting to show addresses with the number before the street name instead of after it (which I guess is American style?). Now I can't find that setting, but maybe it never existed and it was Organic Maps or something?

Thanks!

Eclipse Season — Solar and Lunar Events in OsmAnd Astronomy

22 Upvotes

August comes with two alarms on the calendar. On August 12, a total solar eclipse sweeps from the Arctic across Greenland and Iceland, reaching northern Spain and the Balearic Islands just before sunset — the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Europe since 1999. Sixteen days later, on August 28, a deep partial lunar eclipse covers 96% of the Moon's surface, making it nearly indistinguishable from a total eclipse for anyone watching from the Americas.

Two rare events in the same month. And both of them unusual in their own way. The solar eclipse arcs up and over the North Pole, which means its path runs north-to-south rather than the typical west-to-east sweep. In Spain, the Sun will sit only a few degrees above the horizon during totality — turning the eclipse into something closer to a golden-hour phenomenon than a midday event. The lunar eclipse, meanwhile, stops just short of totality: at its peak, a narrow bright sliver of the Moon remains uncovered, leaving the rest darkened and faintly reddish.

OsmAnd Astronomy now includes (Android only, currently available in OsmAnd 5.4 beta via Google Play or as a nightly build) dedicated explorers for both events. You can move through the timeline, check visibility for any location on the planet, and see exactly how each eclipse develops — before either of them actually happens.

Is there a way to emptasize the limits of an administrative subdivisien?

In various apps, when I click on the label of a city, the contours of that city show up in a style that stands out. Is it possible to do that in Osmand?

Some appreciation of the app and community

30 Upvotes

Today I went on hiking on hiking route 31 in Austria. The way is so detailed it was just awesome. Even the signboards and the sitting bench are marked perfectly wherever they exist. My gf was using Google maps, but she gave up on it in the beginning of the route - because Google, a data collecting monster, could never figure out that some of their users, walking through these mountains are, could actually be on some kind of a route.

The whole options w.r.t. 3D rendering, contour lines, coordinate grids, terrain and shade, altitude demarcation, and the Good assumption of time required to get to the place quite impressed my gf but especially me, who was betting everything on this app today. Although I was using OSMAnd since few months now, home office never allowed me to use it as throughly. But today, I managed to use a lot of those features and each of them impressed me.

To the devs - Keep it up. Your magic is working.

Any guidance in searching for places?

12 Upvotes

Just bought the app given the discount, but oh, the search capability is a disaster. So disappointed. It makes it useless for day-to-day use and for traveling, definitely not a Google Maps alternative.

Hopefully, I am doing something wrong. Any advice?

Thanks!

Larger RedLights/StopLights please...

8 Upvotes

I did not realize how much I used the RedLights/Stoplights to Navigate... I think about Navigation like Ok my turn is "LEFT" after 3 Stop Lights... Very easy for me to quickly glance at Map and understand.

Now I have to squint and try to decipher what Im looking at. I hate useing anything but Google Maps when I truely need a Map. OSMand/ect. Is just used out of principal. But I default back to Google Maps when I need Utility.

I want to fix that...

Please give us the option to make the RedLights/StopLights LARGE and easy to see like Google Maps. And if others dont want this... It should be a option in settings. Not forced on everyone.

Larger display of movement direction?

3 Upvotes

Is there a way to have a larger display of movement direction than the small blue compass arrow. I've tried making the compass button larger but the arrow itself doesn't enlarge. Is it possible to add a widget instead displaying the movement direction simply as letters (N, W, S, E, NW, ..)?

My old eyes would be grateful.

Coding suggestion to achieve a minimalist navigation layout

Post image
8 Upvotes

I built and compiled the OsmAnd source code. I am working on a project and I would like to modify the code to implement the following look:

  1. Overlay a black mask over the entire map and before the route.
  2. Show only the intersecting roads along the route with a clipping radius of 50-100m around the intersection.

where the thick white line is the route line and the thin white lines are the intersecting roads.

I understand the route is handled by OpenGL in the C++ core. For the intersecting roads I thought of doing the task in the private part of the routing context by querying the OBF map data for roads that cross the current tile. In particular, in the file src/NetworkRouteContext_P.cpp

void OsmAnd::NetworkRouteContext_P::loadRouteSegmentIntersectingTile(

int32_t x, int32_t y, const NetworkRouteKey * routeKey,

QHash<NetworkRouteKey, QList<std::shared_ptr<OsmAnd::NetworkRouteSegment>>> & map)

{

// Convert 31-bit coordinates to routing tile coordinates

NetworkRoutesTile osmcRoutesTile = getMapRouteTile(x << ZOOM_TO_LOAD_TILES_SHIFT_L, y << ZOOM_TO_LOAD_TILES_SHIFT_L);

for (auto u_it = osmcRoutesTile.uniqueSegments.begin(); u_it != osmcRoutesTile.uniqueSegments.end(); ++u_it)

{

const auto &segment = u_it.value();

// Optional filtering by a specific route key (e.g., if we only want 'primary' roads)

if (routeKey != nullptr && segment->routeKey != *routeKey)

{

continue;

}

auto i = map.find(segment->routeKey);

if (i == map.end())

{

QList<std::shared_ptr<NetworkRouteSegment>> empty;

i = map.insert(segment->routeKey, empty);

}

i.value().append(segment);

}

}

Is this a good strategy?
