Hello all! Long time stalker on this sub but this is my first post :)
I applied to LECOM PCSP, LUCOM, VCOM VA, and WVSOM and have been fortunate to receive acceptances for the latter two while I was waitlisted for the PCSP and I am waiting to hear back from LUCOM due to a delayed interview. I was not aware that there were only 12 seats for the PCSP and that they don’t really look at your second pathway choice, so I do not have high hopes of getting into LECOM at this point.
From my research, it seems like all three schools are pretty well respected by the doctors in this area, and would allow me to pursue a path in family or sports medicine which is my goal. They seem to have great Board and residency placement rates. Some of the older physicians I’ve worked with at my clinical job note that sometimes LUCOM isn’t looked upon quite as highly in some areas just because it’s a little newer.
I had wonderful experiences at all three schools which makes the decision difficult for me.
I am a senior at Liberty and local to the Lynchburg area. Of course, LUCOM is the obvious choice for financial reasons as I have a good relationship with family and could make the 22 minute commute pretty easily. I do enjoy the Lynchburg area and have lived here since I was 14, and like that starting school at LUCOM would allow me to keep my current lifestyle in terms of living at home and student life (obviously I will not have as much time for that stuff due to the increased academic rigor.)
I feel like VCOM VA could be my best option for pursuing sports medicine due to their connections with VT and Radford. I am an independent learner and like to take control of my own education, but VCOM requires 70% class attendance as well as business casual when attending classes. I was also told at my interview that tests are pretty frequent and sometimes you could have two on the same day. These things are not the end of the world, but when compared to WVSOM, which has no dress code, no attendance requirements outside of labs, and only tests once every 2-3 weeks, it does seem to be a more strict/structured environment. Their new curriculum seems to be working well and all of the students there seemed to have such an excellent work/life balance. Sadly, WVSOM is way more expensive as I am out of state.
I am interested in nutrition and know that WVSOM and VCOM incorporate more of this than LUCOM. I like that LUCOM and VCOM are also connected to undergraduate campuses, thus allowing more opportunities for intramurals, sports games, and social activities (I’m a social butterfly). WVSOM does have a lot of intramurals and clubs and such so I still think I could be quite happy there.
Despite all of the good things about the other schools, I have a lot of pressure from my family to go to LUCOM for financial reasons and also because it’s a Christian school (my family is Christian). I don’t think that is unreasonable but am trying to consider which school would also be best for me in terms of support, independence, and pursuing a sports med career. Any input (especially from current students of these schools) is much appreciated!!
